Great post. When is the scheduled date for CCHD collection again? The Bishop will be getting my signed annual litany of complaints in the envelope.

Sent this to our Diocesan P&J guy (he's a good guy, "40 Days for Life" participant, USMC Colonel (ret), etc. etc.):

Dear Paul,

http://www.reformcchdnow.com/media/Morality%20Review%20CCHD.pdf>

I thought you'd want to see this. William Marshner finds the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in outright violation of USCCB Guidelines, and concludes that the funding puts Catholics in material cooperation with immoral policies.

Year after year, the CCHD provides Catholic resources for anti-Catholic coalitions; year after year, when faithful lay people object, it’s the faithful lay people who are considered objectionable.

May the Lord do what is needed to reclaim His Church for Himself.

I’d love to hear from you, Paul.

Praying God’s blessing upon you,

[Signed]

Well, I got an answer from our Diocese man. The good points are:

I remain unsatisfied that what we have here in an individual conscientious objector opt-out, rather than the Diocese pulling out of CCHD altogether (doesn't the Diocese itself see anything wrong with "material coooperation with immoral coalitions"?) --- but it's a step in the right direction.

Dear [my name],

As we continue to pray for the necessary reforms of CCHD to be fully embraced in those dioceses that have experienced problems, it will be Bishop Stika’s continued policy to recommend to those whose conscience prevents them from contributing to the CCHD campaign to instead donate to Catholic Charities Pregnancy and Adoption Services. Hopefully the scrutiny that the CCHD campaign continues to receive will eventually purge it of any abuses in those dioceses where it is not properly managed or overseen.

Sincerely in Christ,

Paul
[Diocesan P&J office]

CCHD collection is Nov. 19-20 in most dioceses(but not all).

You don’t have to be a moral theologian to recognize the immorality of the opt-out solution (good guy though Paul might be).

OK, I just sent the whole mess to my pastor with the following concluding comment:

The good points are:

•the Diocese acknowledges that CCHD reforms are necessary and in some Dioceses CCHD needs to be purged of abuses

•the alternative giving suggestion is excellent.

However: you don’t have to be a moral theologian to see the inadequacy of the individual opt-out approach. It solves nothing.

Contraception, abortion, and the perversion of marriage are grave matters. If CCHD funding of these coalitions entails material cooperation with grave sin, it’s not enough for isolated individuals to become “conscientious objectors”. Parishes, dioceses, and the USCCB itself should not go on finessing their cooperation. They (we) are obliged to stop.

We should not materially cooperate with sin while expressing the "hope" that it will "eventually" be corrected. We should not cooperate even with a gun to our heads. But it’s worse to do so voluntarily. And it’s appallingly worse when systemic injustice has the Catholic Church providing support.

Nor, now, do we have the excuse that “we know not what we are doing.”

As I see it, the right thing would be for St. Mary's Parish to:

•discontinue the annual CCHD special collection, and

•instead, have a special collection for the Diocesan Pregnancy and Adoption Services.

Thank you for reading this letter.

Father, please give me your blessing.

Faithfully,

[signed]

I really don’t understand this.

The CHD is clearly dedicated to a number of evils, as they have demonstrated ever since they came into existence. Those evils include intrinsic evils such as abortion and “population control.”

How can the bishops continue to support, or have anything to do with, such an organization.

It’s not just a question of reforming this evil organization. The only practical thing to do is to close it down or to end all connections with it, and to give the money instead to other organizations that are actually beneficial to the poor and genuinely Catholic. Food kitchens, or repair of church roofs, or financial aid to seminary students, or anything but CHD.

An organization that has remained evil for decades is not about to change overnight, not with the same people running it.

Good for you! In my diocese, the archbishop simply ignores letters on CCHD. Literally will not respond! Our local Catholics United for the Faith Chapter hand-delivered a painstakingly detailed 73-page analysis to the archbishop’s secretary. Crickets!!!! http://www.cufmilwaukee.org/files/3-15-11-CUF_Opposition_to_CCHD-Revision8.pdf

Perhaps you’re better off not understanding it. The rot is so pervasive that it can be seriously depressing.

I had thought things would be better in Milwaukee when Listecki replaced the [insert word from Bad Adjectives Thesaurus] Weakland. You need a soft-voiced, sweet-faced fanatic who sill sit-in at his office 24/7 until he gets up off his firm foundation and onto his Apostolic feet and acts Bishoply. God raises up prophets: I will pray for the one He calls.

The libs still run the Chancery. AB Listecki, like his predecessor, doesn’t want to offend anybody.

it’s usually the sunday of the thanksgiving weekend and in those dioceses that have a bishop’s annual appeal during that time, the cchd envelope can usually be found a week or 2 after Easter, some time in april, you usually have to check the second-collection envelope for the “human development” envelope.
