DES MOINES, Iowa - Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann is telling college students in politically important Iowa that all Americans should pay taxes since they all benefit from services such as roads and bridges, national defense and the courts. Her position, which she was outlining today at Iowa State University in Ames, is a direct challenge to rivals Rick Perry and Herman Cain, who are advocating plans that would allow low-wage earners to continue paying no taxes while implementing a form of a flat tax on all other workers. The Tax Policy Center estimates that some 46 percent of households this year will not pay federal income taxes.

At the very least, if you dont pay taxes you shouldn’t get to vote on issues involving taxes & how they’re spent.
AMEN!! EVERYONE needs to have skin in the game!!! And I don’t mean just SS and Medicare!!
Hello Newbie.....do you not pay federal income taxes?? EVERYONE needs to pay the SAME PERCENTAGE!!!!
Well, I agree that if it is going to be watered down with such exceptions, then there is no point. They have to pay something. I would go for a graduated plan that ran from say, 4%, up to 9% on the sales tax. But they have to pay at least the 4%. It is the principle that is important. We need everybody to have skin in the game. That way, they will think twice about more grand, nanny state programs coming down the pike.
The leftard reply to that would be the poor do pay taxes...
and cite the tax on the bottle of OE they bought with their EBT card.
I agree with Bachmann. She’s one gutsy lady.
If you don't get elected then you can't make any changes.
If a candidate ran on a platform promising to double or triple the amount of taxes that you yourself pay then would you vote for them?
So...then should we lie or obfuscate the truth to try to win votes? Sounds a bit familiar, doesn’t it?
Bachmann nails another common sense approach. Every able-bodied citizen pays something. It is time the parasites were weaned before they kill the host.
Your snide remarks are misdirected. You should be focusing on the enemy in the white house, not this fine candidate—she is not the enemy, but a friend of freedom.
Say you are a progressive. You are now faced with an odious national sales tax. Is that going to make you suddenly realize that government spends too much and taxes too much, and that self-reliance is the way to go? I doubt it.
All it will do is inflame the same old ideas---tax the rich. And at some point a Congress and president will be able to do it. And in the meantime, they'll STILL have the new sales tax. But now, it'll come with various exemptions or rebates or whatever scheme is needed to make the system "progressive." There's no ifs about it.
Mode of taxation is not the issue. Spending is the issue, and the ideology of those who want to spend--socialism. No tax gimmick is going to fix that, and some--like 9-9-9, will make it worse.
The best argument for changing the mode of taxation is growth. But why not tax imports? We barely tax them at all now. We used to derive 80-90% of our needed revenue that way. What changed?
In recent times, import taxes have been derided as a tax on consumption! The argument was you would be raising prices on consumer goods! Well? Why is it suddently OK to tax ALL consumption, but not OK to tax imports?
Talk about fairness? Take a look at what our imports are taxed in other countries! I'm not talking about protectionism. I am not advocating "protecting" ineffeciency at home by taxing efficiency overseas. I'm talking about raising the necessary revenue to run our government.
If you want to tax consumption, start with imports. That's a consumption tax that is avoidable, that favors (but does not protect) domestic growth and jobs, and was a system good enough for the founding generation of Americans.
And CUT SPENDING!
everyone should pay and income tax day should be the day before election day.
there should be no withholding- everyone should have to write a check.
this way everyone has a short memory, hand cramps and bad attitude ready to toss the rat bastards out.
Vote for me so I can raise your taxes. Well that should send her poll numbers soaring.”
You seemed to have missed the point: she has rightfully suggested that all able-bodied citizens must pay something. She was not referring to those who already pay taxes. The fact that almost 50% pay no federal income taxes is the issue—get it. This is not sustainable. Which category are you in?
Problem is 50% are not paying federal income taxes and this same demographic get most of the federal handouts—they will continue to vote for the demrats that give them the most in gov’t checks.
