OAKLAND -- Work crews and employees of trashed buildings in downtown Oakland set to work this morning cleaning up from the post-midnight riot that broke out after Occupy Oakland's daylong general strike.
Graffiti was spray-painted on many buildings along Broadway from 14th to 16th streets, where masked vandals shattered windows and threw objects at police. Officers responded by firing tear gas and flash-bang grenades and making dozens of arrests.
At the Men's Wearhouse, which had closed Wednesday and put up signs in support of the general strike, windows were shattered. A box nearby read, "Cop uniform surrender box." No police uniforms were inside.
At the Travelers Aid Society building on 16th Street near Telegraph Avenue, which protesters broke into late Wednesday, broken windows were also boarded up. Spray-painted graffiti was everywhere inside the vacant building, including, "Reclaiming property isn't violence" and obscenities directed at police.
"All cops are bastards," one message read. Three circled A's, the symbol for anarchy, were spray-painted in orange on the windows..

and to the Oakland city council member who marched with the protesters, Great Job too.
and Kudos to the police for the imposed restraint, even under barrage.. Hang in there.
Their parents best have a ton of loot in order to pay for the property damage.
Mayor Quan should take a page from Jerry Brown. When the ANSWER types were rioting over the war in Iraq he sent in the riot police with tear gas and rubber bullets the first time, and backed the cops all the way. There were no more riots.
The earlier report stated it was a “peaceful” protest with some violence — whatever makes the Fraud in DC look the best!
Why would anyone make them pay?
Assuming they could find anyone who did damage, that is...
If Mayor Quan wasn’t mayor, she’d be out there with the Occupiers. I believe she is chomping at the bit to take part, but, alas, she is mayor now.
Anyone out there really give a damn if these fools burn all of Oakland to the ground???
Oooooh, wastin’ away again here in Obamaville.
"All cops are bastards,..."
Huh. Sounds like a good many Freepers are at the Occupy Oakland riot. I thought traffic seemed a little light around here.
Maybe we can take up a donation here for gasoline purchases for them.
The mayor and sheriff are letting the outlaw gang have their run of the town.
Luckily the level of violence in the OWS rally hasn’t reached the level seen in the Tea Party protests or it would have been pointed out by the MSM
The Mayor applauded the OWS riots, he said it was a good day for the 99%.
I loved what Willie Brown wrote once....”If you’re eating out in Oakland, be sure and order the soup - that way you’ll have someplace to hide your jewelry when the place gets robbed.”
(At the Men’s Wearhouse, which had closed Wednesday and put up signs in support of the general strike, windows were shattered.)
I will forgo making any purchases from any business I can identify as publically supporting these morons! Corporate headquarters of Mens Wearhouse will receive a letter stating so.
Our cities are broke and we allow these idiots to trash them costing us citizens more money we do not have? I would rather pay for the police to do their duty then the sanitation department..........
NO!!!, Al tho there are probably a few good people who would like to excape that Commie paradise but cannot.
ya get riff raff in any crowd, I reckun ,, FRingers.. from the other side.
There is an unholy pleasure in destruction and this “politically correct” child of the left gives those who succumb the cover and ‘excuse’ to enjoy themselves. If you caught 10 of these masked CRIMINALS, 9 of them would give blank stares if you asked them for something other than slogans about what this protest is about. Number 10 would be a dedicated anarchist who would rave about the evils of anything and everything that smacks of civilized society.
Once I was watching a football game on T.V. from Oakland.
Some moron wore an opposing team jersey.
They knocked him out and were passing him up to the top of the stadium where the cops finally stopped the crowd as they were trying to throw his ass out over the top.
A drop of probably a hundred feet.
Great place, right up there with East St. Louis.
“Great place, right up there with East St. Louis.”
Yeah! Another great place, was headed East bound years ago on a M/C and had to stop outside of there for fuel. Went right through down town, stopped for the first Red light. But NO MORE, the first one cured me, blew the rest and heaved a big sigh of relief when I crossed the bridge.
Aren’t their suits the cheap kind?
Last year my family drove Route 66 from Chicago to the Pier as Santa Monica.
In the route 66 guide book we have it says to get on the freeway and go around East St. Louis.
I about laughed my can off.
