Fred Thompson: Who Dropped the Dime on Cain?
National Review Online ^ | November 3, 2011 | Fred Thompson

Posted on 11/03/2011 12:31:01 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

......Days after I got into the presidential race in 2007, I was greeted with a website, “PhoneyFred.org,” described in the media at the time as an “anti Fred Thompson smear site.” You couldn’t really tell who was behind it, but we learned of it from the Democratic National Committee, which made ample use of it. We assumed that they had created it. However, a reporter at the Washington Post (of all people) decided to find out who was behind the site. After a lot of effort, she traced it to an executive of TTS Strategies, a South Carolina consulting firm run by J. Warren Tompkins, one of the most notorious hardball political operatives in the country.

Politicians of opposing campaigns were known to get what was called the “Warren Treatment.” He ran George W. Bush’s 2000 campaign, in which anonymous flyers and telephone calls accused John McCain of fathering an illegitimate child with a black woman.

In 2007, he was running Mitt Romney’s campaign in South Carolina, where Mitt was behind the rest of us in the polls. Of course, when confronted, both Tompkins and Mitt were “shocked” to learn that a rogue employee (who ran Tompkins’s office) was running such a website (out of the office), and the site was taken down immediately. One of the more benign and amusing things the site accused me of was being a “flip flopper.” I kid you not.

This doesn’t mean that Mitt is behind the Herman Cain hit piece. I’d like to think that he — and his extensive staff, many of them with training in the “political dark arts” — has learned....

Nope, I think it was Newt. He is defending his friend Herm today. How conveeeeeeeeeeeeeeniet!
Newt needs to keep Herm viable through the cash bar debate in the Woodlands (Houston) this Saturday.

You're just upset that Governor Mumbles wasn't invited.

Interesting.

Pretty interesting thoughts from a man who has “been to the rodeo.” But he let’s Cain off way too easy for publicly and loudly accusing the Perry campaign, and then totally backing away from that the very next day. That to me is almost as disgraceful as leaking the story, or maybe even worse.

Why would Romney want to damage his VP candidate like this? After all you and the rest of the Perry brigade have repeatedly said that Cain was only in this to be Romney’s VP.

You Perry shills are really pathetic.

The Bush campaign put some flyers out on McCain about something. I remember McCain going crazier than normal.

Somehow someway, we need to get DeMint or Palin in the race.

Oldest and best way are the same ...... brokered convention, nobody has more than a plurality, and then .....

STAMMMMPEEEEEEEDE!!

The beauty of it is, the MSM "Oppo" Liebot operations won't have any time to prepare to smear whomever the GOP nominates, and so the nominee will have a precious window of hours, maybe even a day, to define himself or herself anew, without the MoDo or HateyKatie or DrunkenDiane treatment.

Fred, you broke my heart in 2008. We all know Perry is behind this. CW is in panic mode right now.

He broke my heart too.

I'm a Cain guy, and I bust on wifey all the time, but tell me just how do we "know" that anita's boi toy is behind this?

If his campaign started the leak, and some one can prove it OK, but I've not seen proof.

I really don't care if it was perry, mittens or the demnoRATS, {which I doubt, because they would have held it until they saw if Herman was going to win the nomination, before dropping the story} but I'm glad it's out now and not November 2012.

Herman either will or will not overcome these allegations, and if he does, whatever doesn't kill him will make him stronger.

Cheer up, the election is a year away.

Since then, Fred has been pushing the national popular vote and destroyed what little credibility he had left.

Seriously? That's pathetic. It's bad enough watching him push reverse mortgages to seniors on infomercials.

All I know is, is that the Dimocrats are loving this. They think the real black man is in trouble and will not be of harm to their half & half in the House in the hood. This is going to hurt with a lot of folks. Cause folks to lose faith in Mr. Cain. If it was going to happen to him, better now than later, like the night before the election when GWB’s DUI came out. At least if he survives this, he has time to heal it before the elections begin. I am still in his side. I hate Romney and Perry and will not vote for either.

I think 0bama’s supporters would read this thread and the comments and be very happy. Their strategy is working beautifully. We egg on our candidates to tear each other apart, and 0bama gets a free pass to campaign on our tax dollars.

.......Cain was only in this to be Romney’s VP.

I guess Cain just got the boot.

Like Cain who won't find it in himself to question Romney's possible involvement (always taking his anger out on Perry), many posters here on FR will continue their coordinated assault against Rick Perry and anyone who supports him.

I got a big problem with some people here on FR and that problem is as soon as someone doesn't kiss their candidates ass they call him a Rino.

Jim DeMint was called one not long ago and that pissed me off and opened my eyes that a certain sect on FR are waaaay into the cult of personality thing here.

We'll get so narrow as a party we'll be crushed in November.

"Black ops", pure and simple. They snipe from behind trees then run off in the dark of the night. The candidates they work for smile and laugh it off in a phony mantra of plausible deniability.

So help me, I am going to get (expose) those sonsabitches.

Don’t forget the obligatory hat tip to the grand-daddy of dirty politics in the modern age - Tricky Dick Nixon.

Sorry, but I think that one's interred with Drew Pearson's lying body ..... even in death, he still lies. It was his genius, to defend his fellow-traveling Communists against their detractors by smearing critics viciously, even taking hits from libel judgments and then going right back to lying about people. He was absolutely dedicated to lying.

It’s logical that it’s Mitt since Cain has been passing up Mitt in the polls. Who stands to benefit most from Cain gettng trashed?

When I read he supported NPV I was dismayed. One CANNOT be a Conservative and support NPV.

For Fred to not see the utter evil of NPV tells me his is an idiot. To think I gave that fool money when he was running.
