"What I was attempting to do," he said, grinning, "was to suggest that Mr. Norquist, like millions of Americans, believes that raising taxes is not good for our economy."
Boehner insisted that Republicans would only compromise on tax revenue if Democrats were willing to take significant and painful steps to shore up Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. "Without real reform on the entitlement side, I don't know how you put any revenue on the table."
"I didn't agree to set this thing up with any idea that it wouldn't succeed," he said. "And I've been clear with everyone through this process that we have to meet the goal. I'd love to exceed the goal. But we have to meet the goal and I'm going to put every effort in to make sure that we do."
So what's holding up the talks? "It's the same conversation that's been going on all year," Boehner said. "They want more revenue than what we're willing to give, and they're not willing to do as much entitlement reform as we'd like to do." He indicated that he has been heavily involved in the minutiae of debt negotiations. "There's all kinds of discussions and permutations and models. Raising tax rates, or imposing new taxes, is not at all the same thing as increasing revenue.
The very fastest way to raise revenue is to remove the boot at the throat of the US economy, and that could be accomplished practically overnight with shutting down EPA and repealing the badly misnamed “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”, passed with such enthusiasm only a couple of years ago.
Uncertainty about the future of the US economy would disappear quickly, and nothing would release the pent-up energy like taking away the restraints.

Are we using the Democrats language now? Revenue=increased taxes? Are you personally giving these 'revenues', John? Who is the 'we' that you are talking about? How much will my taxes (oops, revenue contributions) increase just to pay my portion of the Solyndra slush fund? Or any of the EPA handouts of my hard earned money?

Because Boehner keeps mentioning “revenue” it just might be possible that he is talking about a “statically” scored revenue neutral “flatter” income tax that, when dynamic effects are considered, would produce more revenue. We’ll see.

Boehner sees that it is likely that Cain will implode and Mitt Romney will become President. Thus he doesn’t really have to pretend to be a conservative anymore. Instead of Philadelphia freedom he has RINO freedom now. If Cain doesn’t get his act together expect to see more of this crap.
