Occupy Oakland: Mayor Quan maintaining hands-off position on protesters

OAKLAND -- After a massive and mostly peaceful demonstration against large corporations Wednesday eroded into late night clashes with police and 80 arrests, people on both sides of the fence were in damage control mode, with Occupy Oakland organizers and city officials trying to figure out what to do next.

And in a press briefing Thursday afternoon, it appears that as far as Mayor Jean Quan is concerned the city will maintain its hands-off status quo. She blamed the destruction on a small group and said the larger Occupy group was not the problem.

...

She also said that because of what happened, many in the Occupy group were finally willing to communicate with her and city staff.

"The people in the plaza are saying enough is enough, it's gone too far," Quan said. "(What happened after midnight) doesn't make me happy, but we're going to assess the situation day by day, and make sure we have a resolution that's safe for people.

"Last night I was happy, for the first time, people in the plaza started communicating with us ... they said 'we're not part of what's happening over there.' We advised them to stay separate and not let the provocateurs get into the camp."

The Occupy Oakland camp also met to rehash the night's events. During a three-hour meeting Thursday morning the group reached an anti-vandalism consensus that sought to separate the main movement from those who smashed property, lit fires and attacked police. But rather than apologize outright, the group decided to tell the damaged businesses that they were sorry and offer to help.

"It's not about anarchists versus liberals, it's about (expletives) versus Occupy Oakland," said the meeting facilitator.

How is it “hands off” when you encourage city employees to join the mob and give them the day off to do it??

Oakland business owners may as well just board up and close their businesses and open one elsewhere.. and even then, Quan won’t get why they would want to move.

Why can’t they occupy her house? She should have to endure several hundred smelly weirdos encamped on her property.

From the looks of things, more or the “regular public” not involved in the OWS protesting will be hurt. Who will be called responsible? In wonder if the City of Oakland can look forward to some expensive legal bills trying to defend themselves against dereliction of duty claims?

If the government won't protect the people, the people will have to protect themselves or leave. As to the offer for the protesters to “help” the businesses that were damaged, the fool me once, fool me twice rule comes into play. Don't let the scum near your businesses.

Aren’t the (expetives) part of their stupid 99%? Duh, lay down with dogs, you might wake up with fleas (though all dogs I know are cleaner than these occupy pigs).

I sure hope the city gets sued for damages or funds owed them due to no protection being around at all.

They can’t afford,, but they should have thought of thata long time go when the plaza was first seized.

Tea Party no arrests. OWS over 3,000 arrests.

I suppose she’s not worried about them burning down the city? If that’s the case then the police should just all go home and get their families out of the city... Then let the idiots go wild. I’m sure nothing would happen - after all these people are “peaceful”. The bonfire last night was for HEAT - the people are cold, y’know? It’s their “right” to burn the city for warmth!

Twinkles up for anti-vandalism!
It took them THREE HOURS to reach consensus on that point??? They may claim these are agent provocateurs not associated with them, but the fact that they have had speakers addressing the crowds saying that violence is necessary and that they didn’t distance themselves from that to begin with kind of puts the lie to their claims. I love how they think their “consensus” will do ANYTHING to stop the behavior, or that it absolves them of ALL wrong-doing... They KNEW this would happen, and if they claim they didn’t they are all liars...

What’s really funny is that the libs tried to plant racists and other miscreants in the Tea Party movement without success in order to make them look bad.

With the OWS crowd, you don’t have to plant anyone. You just sit back and watch the inevitable happen.

There ain't no Leftist, like a FEMALE SF Bay Area corporate/bureaucrat Leftist.

These creatures lay awake at night giggling while they fantasize about running concentration camps.

That's not an exaggeration.
