A HOSPITAL in south China has suspended four medical workers for mistakenly diagnosing a stillbirth and disposing of a baby that was alive, state press said today.
Health authorities in Guangdong province have launched an investigation into the incident on October 26 at the Nanhai Red Cross Hospital in Foshan city, the Beijing News said.
Liu Dongmei - eight months pregnant - had been rushed to the hospital with internal bleeding and stomach cramps.
She later had an emergency birth but the baby was neither breathing nor crying when it came out and its skin had turned purple, the report said.
Believing it was dead, the medical team disposed of the child but did not follow proper hospital procedures, it added.
When Liu's sister-in-law asked to see the body around 30 minutes after birth, she was handed a yellow plastic bag containing the infant and found it was still alive, said the Foshan News, a local website.
"I opened the plastic bag and saw the baby's hands and feet moving, the stomach was going up and down and air bubbles were coming out of his mouth," the paper quoted her as saying.
She was further shocked when she saw the baby was a boy - not a girl as the family had been told, it said.
According to the Foshan News, nurses had told the family the child was a girl in an effort to blunt the blow of its death.
In China, baby boys are often viewed as more precious than girls, as many families can have only one child as part of the nation's population policy and desire a male heir.
Following the discovery, the newborn was rushed to intensive care where he remains in stable condition.
Poor little guy...I sure hope he makes it.
These stories about people placing such a low value on girl babies just makes me physically ill :-(
What the hell is wrong with people....someone please beam me up.
Small wonder they ran over that little girl in the street and left her there to bleed. Wonder what would have happened if it had been a little boy?
Oh, yes, that helps so much. (Do I need a "sarc" tag?)
The twisted attitude towards baby girls over there is a disgrace. China is only digging their own grave with this policy as they have a disproportionate ratio of men to women.
I was really glad to see that this little boy is still alive. I hope he makes it.
I don’t think it’s a government policy. It’s a cultural problem more than anything.
That is because a "boy child" is supposed to care for his parents in their old age. Girls are expected to attach themselves to their husbands' families. It's a form of social security in Chinese culture.
“It’s a form of social security in Chinese culture.”
And we’re told that all cultures are equal.
So we abort both boys and girls here and rely on our government. ;-)
“I don’t think it’s a government policy... a cultural problem”
I can see your point but if China didn’t restrict people to one birth only... it wouldn’t see girls in such a completely negative light. Granted... the culture doesn’t like girls that much; however, when a couple’s entire financial future is based upon birthing a boy OR a girl.... the want/need for a boy becomes extreme. IMHO.
It's worse than that. We're told that third-world cultures are better because they are oppressed by evil capitalist first-world countries (specifically, the USA). That's why liberals excuse and apologize for torture, sexism, racism, and homophobia practiced in third-world countries (not to mention third-world contributions to Global Warming).
Amidst the hoopla about the Chinese economy, it's important to note that the average Chinese income is 1/10 of stateside levels. Given the lack of a social safety net in China, I'd say it's not a form of social security (which brings to mind mere penny-pinching) - it's a form of starvation avoidance.
Planned Parenthood will be upset the baby lived I guess.
Uhmmm... is that the first time they ever saw a newborn baby? What color did they _think_ it should be? All my (4) kids came out deep purple to begin with!
Actually, women here had been downgraded long before the one-child policy, so it really had little to do with this policy or govn’t. And besides the social safety thing, people prefer baby boys because they wish to pass on their family names & blood, how ever noble or humble.
