The Birth and Death model is a statistical tool that guestimates the number of jobs added and lost due to the birth and death of businesses that haven’t been reported at the time of the release of the unemployment statistics. It is applied to the National Payroll survey.

The data collected by the BLS come from two sources:
National Payroll Data from business, and
Household data from individuals

The household data is used to calculate the unemployment rate.
