Wow! Watching the F-35B land vertically on an aircraft carrier, take off in an amazingly short distance is a sight to behold. The only problem is the way too intrusive, overwhelmingly annoying, monotonous background music.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings. Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist. The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation. This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I remember the first tests to see if a B-25 could take off from a carrier was done off the Virginia coast.

They then trained at Eglin AFB.

I think the same thing applies to the F-35, not sure if the original ac was the Wasp but it could have been.

This could explain a lot of UFO sightings.

True that. I would have preferred to hear what this bird sounds like when it hovers in or takes off.

Great! Ya Know, libs say they are “progressive” because they want same sex marriages. I say conservatives are progressive because they design progressive jets such as these. While the libs are still packing poopers, conservatives build things

That looks far more manageable and safer than how plans take off and land on carriers tosay, especially in bad weather.

Amazing video. What a difference 50 years of technology makes. A Harrier always looked like it was balancing on top of a beach ball. The F-35 is rock solid in hover.

I’m surprised they used one front lifting flap on top, rather than two side lifting flaps on top. It looks like it would snap off if not lowered in time on a quick take off.

I think it was originally designed with side opening doors but they had an airflow problem so it was redesigned. About halfway through the video you can see some side opening doors behind the rear hinged door open up.

It’s all about getting air to the fan.

You’re right though, it looks like that main door will be stressed a lot over the plane’s lifetime. There’s probably a software limiter so it doesn’t open above a certain airspeed.

Great... Eliminate the Departments of Commerce, Education, Interior, the EPA, The BATF, HUD, Fannie & Freddie, and many
do-nothing paper pushers at the DOD.

There.. fixed it... Now you can afford to buy the F-35.

Two questions, I expect several here will know the answers:

1. Why when landing does the plane come alongside, then slide over the deck, as opposed to approaching directly frorm astern?

2. I understand why CVNs go to max speed during air ops..( to increase airspeed over the deck) ..but during VL recoveries, does the carrier all but slow down? Is it safest to land on a stationary deck?
