Most of the unemployed no longer receive benefits
Yahoo ^ | 11/5/11 | Christopher S. Rugaber - AP

Posted on 11/05/2011 1:45:43 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

WASHINGTON (AP) — The jobs crisis has left so many people out of work for so long that most of America's unemployed are no longer receiving unemployment benefits.

Early last year, 75 percent were receiving checks. The figure is now 48 percent — a shift that points to a growing crisis of long-term unemployment. Nearly one-third of America's 14 million unemployed have had no job for a year or more.

Congress is expected to decide by year's end whether to continue providing emergency unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If the emergency benefits expire, the proportion of the unemployed receiving aid would fall further.

The ranks of the poor would also rise. The Census Bureau says unemployment benefits kept 3.2 million people from slipping into poverty last year. It defines poverty as annual income below $22,314 for a family of four.

Yet for a growing share of the unemployed, a vote in Congress to extend the benefits to 99 weeks is irrelevant. They've had no job for more than 99 weeks. They're no longer eligible for benefits.

Their options include food stamps or other social programs. Nearly 46 million people received food stamps in August, a record total. That figure could grow as more people lose unemployment benefits.

So could the government's disability rolls. Applications for the disability insurance program have jumped about 50 percent since 2007.

I guess getting paid by OCCUPY doesn’t count for much when ya crunch the numbers job-wise.. just a tiny insignificant ripple. The 99% are just a cheap pool of ready-made protesters.. or sumthin’.

What, only some states get extended benefits? Only the "hardest hit"? From what I have seen, those will all be Democrat states.

Once there are no longer any more rich outside of government, can we then finally blame the politicians within the two party system for all the demise that they have created in destroying freedom?

Isn't this rather obvious?

Why is it that we don't have double-digit unemployment?? The unemployment rate was 9.1%, the numbers are bad every month, and now the rate is 9%.

It's because people lose their benefits, drop off the chart, are no longer counted -- that's why the unemployment rate goes down.

As the bad times stretch out longer and longer, the statistics will look better and better.

But some people see.

A person who no longer qualifies for unemployment may want to consider taking one of the many jobs available at lower wages than they would wish for. But the jobs are out there. I see the help wanted signs everywhere.

Just talked to a woman who runs a high end fashion store. They want to hire someone for back room work, receiving and paperwork, with basic skills, like, can add and subtract and read and write, and can be trusted to show up reliably. Good long term potential for advancement. They can't find anyone suitable.

How long is this emergency going to last?

99+ weeks? that’s welfare.

There are jobs out there waiting to be filled. Cut um off and people will take the 10-15 dollar an hour jobs.

But as long as unemployment pays MORE people will use that up first. If their spouse is making enough for them to get by they may never look for work.

Giving up work though you want to also stops the “unemployed” count. I know several women who now say they are stay at home mothers of school aged children because it is less painful than saying they’ve been looking for management, PR or communications work for 2+ years.

I know in the dakotas and northwest oil companies are looking for workers.

If they really need the work, sometimes you have to go where the jobs are and do a job you wouldn’t otherwise do.

Also remember that those no longer looking for work aren’t counted either.

They (fedgov) made some changes to the numbers this year and how they calculate unemployment. In Obama’s favor, and it’s still at 9%. I think the real rate is 16-19% range.

During the summer we need a graphic designer and we posted the per hour rate which was $19...if you are “good”.

I interviewed myself more than 20, and we eventually hired 5 in total? WHY? The first 4 were a bunch of pampered libs who wanted us to cater to their needs and screwed around when no one was looking.

One even wanted me to PICK THEM UP FOR THE INTERVIEW because his car “was parked at his girlfriend’s house”. Unbelievable..

Yeah, I had a boss like that once, real jerk.

He wouldn’t hire anybody who was unemployed. Then he got mad when one of the applications that he was looking at was for someone who was qualified, but had covered over an unemployed period.

He asked me what I thought about it, and I told him, that I thought it was a good idea to advertise that you are willing to hire folks who are at present unemployed. You would be a hope in bleak times for many folks struggling.

I got canned. Don’t ask my opinion if you don’t want it.

I had a horse/cattle farm for a number of years. I mowed, raked, baled and bucked lots of hay. And did all of the other labor intensive work that goes with it. Fencing, irrigation pipe repair, electrical repair, rounding up runaway cows, loading them up and transporting them to market, building cow barns, horse shelters, pasture management, taking care of the sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, geese and feeding all of the other critters. I loved it! Never picked cotton and ain’t interested in doing so. If it were a choice between eating and not, I’d pick cotton and anything else that needed picking. If I had a dollar for every bale I bucked, horse I wrangled or cow I wrassled I could buy a brand new, all whistles, 4 wheel drive, F550 diesel, king cab, 8 foot bed, man truck and have enough left over to buy all the anesthetic scotch I’d need after doing that work. LOL!

If I was unemployed I’d rather stay home than subject myself to unfair compensation. Or maybe I would get that job just to see what was going on, then demand a wage increase. But I guarantee you i would not stay there for that pay rate. for chrissakes, I got hired $8.50/hour over 20 years ago to be a dumb laborer and there was no requirement for transportation, steel toe, drug screen, or telephone.

the average idiot obama voter NEVER donates money or time to any campaign and half the time they don’t even bother to vote. If the unemployment rate is calculated the way it was when Clinton was president, it's above 22.0%. That's in league with the Great Depression rates.

Democrats get their campaign money from rich people and from illegal methods(ie unions and other corruption such as solyndra). Your average run of the mill democrat voter is a good person that just happens to be ignorant of politics and the economy. Sure there are the rotten tomatoes...the true believers...the marxists and the sickos that actually believe commerce, technology, and capitalism is destroying the planet and is the scourge of humanity. Most democrat voters are not like that at all. most of them are more like you and I than the marxists...they’re just too dumb to realize it.

“$10/hr.”

That is about what the 99 weekers get on unemployment. I’ve heard several say they wouldn’t go to work for $10/hr. Of course, they fail to understand that they are getting their foot in the door and no matter if they made $100k before if this is the only work then take it and move up or keep looking for a better job anyway.
