Most of the unemployed no longer receive benefits
Yahoo ^ | 11/5/11 | Christopher S. Rugaber - AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The jobs crisis has left so many people out of work for so long that most of America's unemployed are no longer receiving unemployment benefits.

Early last year, 75 percent were receiving checks. The figure is now 48 percent — a shift that points to a growing crisis of long-term unemployment. Nearly one-third of America's 14 million unemployed have had no job for a year or more.

Congress is expected to decide by year's end whether to continue providing emergency unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If the emergency benefits expire, the proportion of the unemployed receiving aid would fall further.

The ranks of the poor would also rise. The Census Bureau says unemployment benefits kept 3.2 million people from slipping into poverty last year. It defines poverty as annual income below $22,314 for a family of four.

Yet for a growing share of the unemployed, a vote in Congress to extend the benefits to 99 weeks is irrelevant. They've had no job for more than 99 weeks. They're no longer eligible for benefits.

Their options include food stamps or other social programs. Nearly 46 million people received food stamps in August, a record total. That figure could grow as more people lose unemployment benefits.

So could the government's disability rolls. Applications for the disability insurance program have jumped about 50 percent since 2007.

I guess getting paid by OCCUPY doesn’t count for much when ya crunch the numbers job-wise.. just a tiny insignificant ripple. The 99% are just a cheap pool of ready-made protesters.. or sumthin’.

What, only some states get extended benefits? Only the "hardest hit"? From what I have seen, those will all be Democrat states.

Once there are no longer any more rich outside of government, can we then finally blame the politicians within the two party system for all the demise that they have created in destroying freedom?

Isn't this rather obvious?

Why is it that we don't have double-digit unemployment?? The unemployment rate was 9.1%, the numbers are bad every month, and now the rate is 9%.

It's because people lose their benefits, drop off the chart, are no longer counted -- that's why the unemployment rate goes down.

As the bad times stretch out longer and longer, the statistics will look better and better.

But some people see.

Exactly so. Meanwhile, crops are reportedly rotting on the ground in Alabama because there is no one to pick them.

A person who no longer qualifies for unemployment may want to consider taking one of the many jobs available at lower wages than they would wish for. But the jobs are out there. I see the help wanted signs everywhere.

Just talked to a woman who runs a high end fashion store. They want to hire someone for back room work, receiving and paperwork, with basic skills, like, can add and subtract and read and write, and can be trusted to show up reliably. Good long term potential for advancement. They can't find anyone suitable.

No longer true actually. If you are still looking for work you are still counted, whether you receive unemployment or not. If you say the hell with it and stop looking, then you no longer get counted.

How long is this emergency going to last?

99+ weeks? that’s welfare.

There are jobs out there waiting to be filled. Cut um off and people will take the 10-15 dollar an hour jobs.

But as long as unemployment pays MORE people will use that up first. If their spouse is making enough for them to get by they may never look for work.

The company I work for has a very hard time finding decent applicants. Hired one guy and he was constantly on the phone with “baby momma” issues so he did slipshod work. A second hire did quality work when he showed up, but called in at least once every other week.

Giving up work though you want to also stops the “unemployed” count. I know several women who now say they are stay at home mothers of school aged children because it is less painful than saying they’ve been looking for management, PR or communications work for 2+ years.

I know Alabama farmers are looking for people to work.

I know in the dakotas and northwest oil companies are looking for workers.

If they really need the work, sometimes you have to go where the jobs are and do a job you wouldn’t otherwise do.

I will tell you what. I have picked cotton and bailed hay... I would do it again if I have to but picking is a hard job. Not one that many will do...
