A Shocking 52% Of Unemployed Americans Have Exhausted Their Benefits (What next?)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The jobs crisis has left so many people out of work for so long that most of America's unemployed are no longer receiving unemployment benefits. Early last year, 75 percent were receiving checks. The figure is now 48 percent — a shift that points to a growing crisis of long-term unemployment. Nearly one-third of America's 14 million unemployed have had no job for a year or more.

Congress is expected to decide by year's end whether to continue providing emergency unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If the emergency benefits expire, the proportion of the unemployed receiving aid would fall further.

The ranks of the poor would also rise.

The Census Bureau says unemployment benefits kept 3.2 million people from slipping into poverty last year. It defines poverty as annual income below $22,314 for a family of four.

Yet for a growing share of the unemployed, a vote in Congress to extend the benefits to 99 weeks is irrelevant. They've had no job for more than 99 weeks. They're no longer eligible for benefits.

We have a winner. Of course all world bamster will push for another extension, however I see another year so it compares with most eurozone countries, 36 months. Buying votes is nothing new for this crowd. Remember Bush secured the seniors with prescription drug coverage. Of course an honorable child will purchase drugs for a parent in need rather than buy that 3D 75” TV but not in today's America. Aging parents are the problem of the government not families. Crazy kinda country where freedom is sold for such a cheep price.

There is no unemployment benefit for the self employed who didn’t pay taxes via payroll. Any doubt their work has nearly ceased? And for those who were self employed, but paid themselves via a payroll, paying taxes, if they waited too late, say beyond 2 years, trying to keep their company afloat without taking a payroll for themselves, then they are royally screwed too...

Since there are only a finite number of burgers that need flipping, or yards to rake at any given time, anticipate a large uptick in crime, particularly theft and burglary.

Understand this.....If you're over 40 years of age and have been unemployed, a number of companies (including I believe Rite Aid) really don't want anything to do with you. Under the same criteria, if you're over 50, good luck finding any company willing to even give you a look. Aside from the age factor (which companies cannot admit to for obvious legal reasons), one of the standard questions asked by most companies early on is “are you currently employed?” A couple of recruiter friends I know have disclosed to me that being unemployed for even a couple of months disqualifies that applicant from being considered.

I'm sure there are some people who are just lazy. But, from correspondences I've had with lots of people (including some fellow Freepers), being unemployed is not due to a lack of effort from these individuals. It's a matter of the Obama economy truly being that rotten.

Unemployment is always an interesting topic here on FR. The arroganet always castigate the unemployed as lazy and cheating the taxpayers.

I’m 63. I have both a Batchelor’s and Master’s degree and have worked in high-tech for over 35 years. I’ve been both worker-bee and management. I’ve also been out of work for over a year. I’m currently attending school pursuing an AAS in IT. I’m on the honor roll and have been admitted to a national honors society.

Week after next, my unemployment expires. I’m still too young to retire, I’ve chewed up my IRA and I still have bills to pay. It’s easy to denigrate the unemployed when you are young and have your job. I can’t tell you how many times people tell me I need to get a job. i can’t tell you how many employers have told me I’m “not qualified” for theirs.

Despite being on unemployment, neither Obama nor the Dems “own me”. I will still vote them out of office next year.

So, when you sit at your keyboard talking about how lazy the unemployed are and how they just need to get one or multiples of part-time jobs, remember that you could be next. There, but for the grace of God, go you.

Avoid buying anything that you don’t really need, and become more independent regarding necessities. Make something useful. Starve the beast. Give those who continue to receive incomes directly or indirectly from government (all levels) a taste of long term unemployment and humility for building character.

Because these unemployed do NOT want to work...I had a conversation with the manager for Rite Aid here in Hollywood and they have had the same openings for 6 clerks but the number of applicants are less than expected. He interviewed more than 50 in the last 3 months and their attitude is not the right kind.

Lets look at this.

6 openings for simple clerk jobs... 50 applicants but none had the right attitude to be a clerk? And then you suggest the unemployed don't want to work.

Ya think anyone believes this story?

There are so many inconsistencies in your concocted comment, it's absurd at best.

So you cannot make up the difference of 6 clerks and 50 applicants and think it’s not possible.

math is not your strength after all...how about adding up the bogus story about the LAPD months ago that you tried to pass as fact and pull the wool over FR and Jimrob?
