SWAT teams dispatched as gun battle unfolds near Escobares[South Texas/Mexico Spillover]

ESCOBARES — Fifteen gunmen crossed the Rio Grande into the U.S. near a shootout between the Mexican military and a group of gunmen was taking place.

Several area SWAT teams were responding about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to a ranch near Escobares, just across the U.S.-Mexico border where a shootout broke out south of the Rio Grande.

The shootout reportedly began shortly after noon but details were not readily available. Residents on the U.S. side reported seeing members of the U.S. Border Patrol and Starr County Sheriff's Office near the border securing the area.

A U.S. law enforcement official confirmed a group of as many as 15 gunmen had crossed the Rio Grande, though it remained unclear whether they were Mexican soldiers or cartel gunmen.

"We don't know who they are," the official said. "We haven't gotten that information yet."

Border Patrol officials said they stopped a smuggling attempt near La Rosita and continue to search the area. However, it remains unclear if the smuggling attempt is related to the gun battle.

Local authorities in Hidalgo County are providing backup support along the Rio Grande as Border Patrol has dispatched additional agents from the McAllen area to the incident in rural Starr County.

Where’s that border hawk Perry?

He's ordered an investigation.

His preffered method of border security is to investigate trespassers as we learn of their transgressions against our sovereignty.

Thanks for the ping.

I was planning on driving from McAllen to Laredo next week. Have to wait until things settle down a bit.

Still shaking my head that I have to take these actions because the feds refuse to protect our border but I won’t put myself in a situation where there are firefights in our country. Escobares is a town in Texas on highway 83, not a town in Mexico. Imagine a foreign narco force armed with military weapons taking on your local sheriff somewhere up in the interior. And the feds still ignore it.

KRGV is reporting that these are the smugglers that were stopped near La Rosita, Texas. After getting into a shootout with the Mexican military, some of them swam back to the US. Authorities on this side say they have the area secured.

I’d have some weapons handy though.

Just going to change my plans. Wont make that drive on 83 from McAllen to Laredo. I have been watching where the firefights have been occuring and it is along that stretch of road. I do carry, but a .40 isn’t much against what the cartels are carrying.

There’s a good program on National Geo about border wars that shows Texas Rangers in action in full military gear including camos, M4s, helos, etc. Not the usual Ranger MO.

The Rangers wouldn’t be in this fight armed like the military if Gov. Perry hadn’t given the orders and approved the unit’s tactics and equipment.

It’s deer season, so a 30-06 and 12 gauge with buckshot and slugs would be OK too. Too bad we can’t have RPGs and full autos!
