AP: Joe Paterno to retire at season's end
CBS Sports ^ | November 9, 2011

UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.

As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."

"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

"Spanier being on, then off Barry’s short list for SecEd...."

He could always take over as Safe Schools Czar.

It’s not the truth, but the seriousness of the charges that’s driving things.

This is one case where the seriousness of the charges rule should apply, at least to get it resolved, because of the potential for more victims.

He should leave immediately if he wants to instill courage and ethics in his players. He should walk the walk.

Well geeze, the guy is 200 years old.

But he has a better undertaker than Dick Clark.

And what about the graduate assistant who ACTUALLY witnessed the raping of the young boy and DID not tell Paterno the entire story. Joe was under the impression that they were horsing around in the shower. Joe told his boss as I would have told mine, and allowed the judicial system to take care of it. Probably never thought about it again until the Grand Jury summons.

McCreary is the guiltiest of them all and no mention of him. HE should have called 911 immediately and told Paterno the exact details of the RAPE.

To say Saturday’s game with Nebraska will be surreal, is the understatement of the year.

I'll be watching for some newly minted "PEDO STATE" banners and T-shirts worn by stealth cornhusker fans.

That said, I imagine any such banners or shirts will be confiscated by the Pedo State authorities before they could be displayed.

But wait until Pedo State goes on its last two road games. Now THAT should prove very interesting...

But he's only 84! What a waste!

He had a good 10 years left in the tank.

So, Joe Pa is a threat?

Two predictions:

1. Tom Ridge will be the new head of the trustees.
I feel 99% on this one.

2. Bill Cowher will be the new coach.
I feel 50/50 on this one.

If the Obama admin ran a backround check on Spanier that turned up something on what Sandusky was doing....

The old sanctimonious geezer tries to take control of the spiraling scandal and hang on til the end of the season. I just LOVED the comment in his release about him not being important enough for the board to have to worry about anymore (or words to that effect).

Five will get you ten that he is gone within a week...he will NEVER make it to the end of the season.

The Huskers might want to be sure they don’t leave any corn cobs behind in ‘Happy Valley’ after the game...

Good Heavens, it's bad enough that Penn State will be forever known as Ped State, but can you imagine if this had happened in Nebraska?

And what of McQuery who ran away when he witnessed the actual crime?

And what of Spainer who participated in the cover-up?

Any trustee who was on the board during all this, should damn well go. Except for Corbett, since he launched the investigation while he was AG, IIRC.

That’s what he gets for passing the buck. Supposedly the Grad Student was very specific as to what was happening. Paterno should have called the Cops right then and there. NO excuse will suffice.
