Emergency Alert System Fails. Itís only funny because there wasnít an emergency.
Human Events ^ | 11-9-11 | John Hayward

Today was the first test of the new Emergency Alert System, which is a centrally controlled version of the Emergency Broadcast System whose tests have been annoying the hell out of people for the better part of fifty years. The idea is to give the President a way to alert the entire populace to a national emergency instantly, by seizing control of all TV and radio communications.

In the event of a nuclear war, large-scale civil unrest, a massive cyber-attack, or a zombie apocalypse, you’ll hear a headache-inducing tone, followed by emergency instructions. Unless we get attacked by an electromagnetic pulse weapon. Then you’ll be alerted to disaster by the collective howl of millions of enraged cell phone users. The EAS tone is less alarming.

The test was a… well, “failure” is such an ugly word. Let’s just say it was a “conditional success.”

Yeah, what is the need? Unless, of course, you want to be able to cut in and control all communications at some future point in time.

I hope this this doesn't turn out the way my town's emergency call system has. The police here can call every land-line at once with a broadcast message. There's at least one message every week. I already recognize when one of these calls is coming in because it's always two calls as I still have two land-lines here and they ring simultaneously. With the recent storm we probably had eight or ten messages last week. I think the last one was about having a Halloween Party at the town pool for the little crumb-crunchers who got cheated out of Halloween this year. There were at least two messages telling us what a great job the town maintenance crew was doing clearing the roads. No more than one in ten of these messages could even remotely be considered emergency information.

At some point in time Odummy will take over everything and now he can let us all know at one time that he intends to be Dictator-N-Chief for life.

He is helping muslims and weakening our country for some reason. I have a nasty feeling we will be finding out why...soon.

When you have a politically connected inept entity tasked with overcharging the taxpayers for an unnecessary service, why would you not want to have another shot at it.

Sounds like there must be a commission that meets regularly, like 5 times per week, to discuss what messages to send out. Its got a chairman, vice-chair, secretary, treasurer. Paid well, could be union representation in there. Consultants they use: Acorn and others. This is emergency stuff, so the town probably bought and paid for hardened underground bunkers for them to meet in, and live in during a real emergency for them to deliberate making more emergency calls.

I think it would still be funny if it was an emergency. But of course I’ve spent most of my life in extremely “high value” nuclear targets, the kind of places where nobody really bothered with duck and cover drills or fallout shelters because we knew if it went that way the city would be nuked to glass. So the whole EBS to me has always been kind of funny.

"This is President Obama. Due to ongoing unrest in our major cities
and increasing tensions around the world, I am issuing an Executive Order indefinitely postponing the 2012 General Election. That is all."

I heard ours on our local talk radio station out of Las Vegas. It was like triple or quadruple, old notice talking over new notice.. almost sounded like an echo.. one would start, then another, then another, all talking a few seconds behind one another.

Had it been an emergency, I would have never understood what the heck they were saying.

OK, folks, we thought $900 billion would do the job, but our 1987 used DOS computers couldn't handle it. So, we are going to dump those computers in the Marianas Trench (at a cost of $100 billion) and set up some used Windows 95 machines we got a great deal on. We should have it up and running in 5 years or so and it will only cost $2.5 trillion for the new technology.

We will also need new software since Microsoft is no longer supporting their WinEmergency Alert System software. We have contracted with 5 kids from a local high school hacker club for only $500 billion to write a brand new system for us. They tell us it will be called, "OMG, Duck Dudes!"
