Rick Perry on debate gaffe: 'I stepped in it'
Polutico ^ | Wednesday November 9, 2011 | Alexander Burns

Posted on 11/09/2011 8:30:08 PM PST by Bigtigermike

Rick Perry swiftly came to the spin room after the end of the GOP debate Wednesday night and directly told reporters that he screwed up on stage.

"I'm glad I had my boots on tonight," Perry said. "I stepped in it out there." Continue Reading

Perry froze up on stage as he attempted to list the three federal departments he planned to cut, naming Education and Commerce but forgetting the Department of Energy.

Said Perry: "I may have forgotten Energy, but I haven't forgotten my conservative principles."

Asked by a reporter if that moment was embarrassing, Perry said: "I stepped in it, man. Yeah, it was embarrassing. Of course it was."

This is so stupid. How many people have had a thought slip their mind. Yes he was on national stage but this is human. It happens. I am no fan of Perry but I am less of a fan of this unimportant stuff taking up headlines.

Has anyone noticed that Europe is crashing financially. It would be far more important to ask Perry and the rest how they plan to protect the U.S. economy if it does.

I do feel bad for Mrs. C, but not that much, she should have been smart enough to know that this guy was a loser from the get go.

And Oh, man he’s the loser of the century, he’s going to be a political science topic on losers.

There is no shortage of headline material. This was a national debate on the US Presidency and probably the liveliest most on-topic relevant discussion of conservative issues in years. Wheres the beef?

Electing a conservative President might positively impact global economics...ya think?

He has FOUGHT the Obummer administration on all 3. He never was a great debater, I’ve been watching him for years. A Great Debater does not make a Great President, but it certainly helps.

With this current crop of GOP Hopefuls, I’m scouring the net for another place to live. I’m hopeless, oh yea and mystified

But at the end of this day, it looks like this gaffe will completely terminate his run for the Republican candidacy, which is sorta important. Republicans need flawlessness and perfection everywhere if they want to ensure we dont have Marx wannabes in charge from 2012 to 2016.

There’s a difference between not being able to answer a question because you don’t KNOW the answer - and not being able to answer a question because your brain just freezes up momentarily. I’ve had that happen before, and the harder you try to retrieve it, the farther away it goes.

It’s terribly embarrassing to happen during a national debate, but Perry recovered and did OK. In fact, if you take away the brain fart moment - this was his best debate yet, he was doing great.

He admits he messed up and owned the embarrassment - at least he didn’t try to blame anyone else or make excuses. I find that to be a likeable trait. He’ll get back on the horse. I still think he is the most qualified candidate running.

True.

But one of my pet peeves is someone on the radio (Jay Severin does this) who decides to recite a list and just takes it too far:

"You might want to visit a state in the Northeast -- states like Massachusetts, or Rhode Island or ... uhhhh .... or .... ummm ... Maine ... or ... ohhhhh ... errrrrr ... Connecticut ... or .... jeeez .... ummmm ..."

At some people the "list makers" have to realize that they've made their point and no longer have to reach for additional examples.

Perry came close to doing that, but he had three -- just three -- things he wanted to list. It was a small, finite list. But it proved challenging.

I remember a really embarrassing moment for Sarah when she, as Governor, held a press conference while, unknown to her, a worker was slaughtering turkeys in the background. The media had a field day with that.

Didn’t see the debate, but probably 85% of those who did including DC bureacRATS were screaming ENERGY! in their heads because they know what he intends to do with that department.

So, he couldn’t remember the word but everybody watching knew what he meant.

We’ll see. The Perry un-supporters will have to wait and see what happens.

The difference there was that Sarah went to a Turkey farm just before Thanksgiving, and the media positioned a camera so that they could show the slaughtering activity going on behind her.

She didn't make a mistake, and the activity was not unexpected. But the media was able to maneuver it into an opportunity to make her look bad. Leftwing sabotage by the "unbiased" press.

What Perry did, he did to himself.

I don’t see how forgetting the Energy Department means anything. Everyone has a memory lapse of minor proportions on occasion. But if Perry were a reliable conservative, he wouldn’t be having all these problems in his campaign.

As if eight yeas of Bush's malaprops weren't enough, the GOP trots out another, perhaps worse evocation of the "conservatives are stupid" meme.

Thinking on one's feet is just part of the job of being President. We simply cannot afford to have a Republican President making constant gaffes in press conferences, in negotiations with foreign dignitaries, or (for example) speaking in international fora. The press would have a field day to the point that it would be hugely damaging to conservative members of Congress as well anyone he might endorse in a state or local election. He is simply unacceptable on this criterion alone.

Perry has had ample opportunity to get it together and has failed, thus casting serious doubt on his electability as well. With his numbers this low, it is not going to get any better now.

It's true. I was amazed how well he was doing up until that moment.

Anyone else... no big deal. But when you have a string of debate failures, and then this... it's killer.

The irony is (and I hate to pile on the poor guy but I guess somebody has to notice it) that it happened not too long after Newt said that any serious discussion of health care must include an all-out attack on diseases of the brain.

(He specifically mentioned Alzheimers... but I think he was secretly thinking of liberalism.)

Anyway, that's just an aside and I apologize to Perry for making it but you know that the worst is yet to come. I don't watch the moron late-night shows but I can just imagine...

It wasn’t Sarah’s mistake, but as I recall her media person chose the spot for the presser. It was unfortunate timing, shortly after Sarah began answering questions the worker began slaughtering turkeys.

“The people who say it’s OVER! are the ones who want him out anyway. We’ll see if it’s really over. I doubt it.”

Perry is polling at 6% in Iowa and 4% in New Hampshire.

This debate is not going to help him with those numbers and if he does not win Iowa or New Hampshire, he is finished.

Well, you have to remember Perry is already POTUS of a whole ‘nother country. Texas GDP is bigger than India’s.

He’s used to speaking one-on-one with companies he persuades to move their businesses and employees here, which do.

It’s hard to compress what you do everyday into sound bites or debate zingers. People who excel at saying things are rarely DOers, and vice-versa. That’s why we have spokesmen.

Perry has failed many times to live up to his billing as put forth by his ardent fans....you know, the ones that infested Palin threads touting Perry at every turn while denigrating Palin supporters......The irony of it all is not lost on the casual observer or Palin supporter......

I seriously doubt those self same Palin supporters turned into Romney fans.....Hint: look at Herman Cain’s poll numbers.........

Perry wasn’t ever really in the hunt after the first couple of weeks after announcing......and his current polling numbers show his candidacy’s lack of support among the rank and file......he is the first of the 1st tier (ahem) candidates to fold......... and in a manner befitting his experience as a pilot......

I don’t think Perry decided to run until about the time it was obvious Sarah didn’t plan to, actually Perry entered in June, about three months about after it was obvious Sarah didn’t mean to, so I’d be surprised if there were Perry supporters on Palin threads bashing her. But I could be wrong.

Some of the Palin supporters displayed disgusting behavior and the criticism was likely warranted.

I like Governor Palin tremendously but began avoiding threads about her because some of her supporters were downright embarrassing.

When Perry entered the race in August, the badly behaved Palin supporters got even worse.

I'm not saying you were one, but there were (still are) some awful ones.
