Very notable news, via Vatican expert Sandro Magister, following the aftermath of the Justice & Peace’s ill-advised white paper (emphasis mine)
Precisely when the G20 summit in Cannes was coming to its weak and uncertain conclusion, on that same Friday, November 4 at the Vatican, a smaller summit convened in the secretariat of state was doing damage control on the latest of many moments of confusion in the Roman curia.
In the hot seat was the document on the global financial crisis released ten days earlier by the pontifical council for justice and peace. A document that had disturbed many, inside and outside of the Vatican.
The secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, complained that he had not known about it until the last moment. And precisely for this reason he had called that meeting in the secretariat of state.
The conclusion of the summit was that this binding order would be transmitted to all of the offices of the curia: from that point on, nothing in writing would be released unless it had been inspected and authorized by the secretariat of state.
Well, we told you so. Liberal Catholics were quick to try to claim this document somehow represented the authoritative teaching of the Church (and Pope Benedict himself), and attempted to criticize orthodox Catholics who accurately presented the document as enjoying little authority as somehow being “cafeteria catholics.”
Well, the ball is back in their court now, and I (and others) haven’t changed our position.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh, they don’t want to hear the truth. They want to believe the MSM when it suits them and deny it when it doesn’t.
Well that’s good news! These councils were set upup after Vatican II and were never supposed to supplant the actual curia, but over the years they became increasingly independent and self-important.
They should have been slapped back years ago.

I didn’t know that about the councils; maybe that explains this statement-”on the latest of many moments of confusion in the Roman curia”.
Its rather odd to me that they’d be experiencing these so-called “moments of confusion”. Most of us old-timers knew this was a screw up but it sure doesn’t help matters.
Indeed, the damage is done.
Sadly, it seems to me that while they had no respect for the Pope under Paul VI, it wasn’t much better with JPII. He started off strong but after the assassination attempt, he backed off on things like exerting authority and reordering some of the areas that sure needed it. It’s probably not easy, to say the least, and some of JPII’s own appointments didn’t help him much. So there’s a backlog of rottenness there.
I think BXVI had planned to do more, but it is clearly a mammoth task because the Vatican bureaucracy is so huge and so entrenched. He has been changing some of the office holders, but slowly, and perhaps he will soon reach “critical mass” and, prompted by things like this, make more radical changes.
It’s a bit like Obama’s Christmas Tree Tax flub.
The Vatican and the US Federal Government have the same problem. The right hand does not know what the 4,632 left hands are doing most of the time.

Sure as my fingers touch these keys, the Vatican will be ignored by the MSM and the Anti-Catholic FReepers alike.
This group should have been reigned in long ago. The cat is out and most of those who use things against us will spin it their own way.

Sounds like you’ve done a good bit of study on Vatican politics. All I can say is, I’m sure glad I’m not Pope or otherwise caught up in that political viper pit. What a freakin’ mess.
It won’t happen in my lifetime, but it would be refreshing to see the changes wrought by the Second Coming; I gotta believe Jesus would have a far less bureaucratic administration.
