Keystone Cop-Out (Obama punts on more than 20,000 shovel-ready jobs.)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Friday, November 11, 2011

Posted on 11/10/2011 6:05:51 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

President Obama used to be fond of "shovel-ready projects." He's also demanding that Congress pass his jobs bill immediately because 9% unemployment is a crisis, and, by the way, he's for making the U.S. less reliant on energy from tyrants. So how about putting 20,000 Americans to work on a North American energy project that's as shovel-ready as they come? Sorry, Mr. Obama is voting present.

The $7 billion project is TransCanada's Keystone XL, a 1,700-mile underground pipeline that would deliver 830,000 barrels of heavy crude oil a day from Alberta to refineries in Oklahoma and Texas. TransCanada filed an application to build the pipeline in September 2008 with the State Department, which must approve it because the pipeline would cross the 49th parallel. In April 2010 and again this August, State produced multivolume environmental impact statements that concluded the pipeline would have "no significant impacts" on the environment. That should have ended the matter.

But the President's environmentalist friends have decided to make Keystone a test of his green virtue. "We'll see if [Mr. Obama] is an oil guy or a people guy," eco-agitator Bill McKibben recently warned at an Occupy Wall Street event, and the Sierra Club has threatened that it won't "mobilize the environmental base" in 2012 if he approves the project. Various Hollywood worthies have marched in front of the White House in protest.

And, what a surprise, suddenly the government is finding new reasons to delay its decision. The State Department's inspector general announced Monday that he is ordering a special review to examine alleged irregularities in the drafting of the impact statements. Then yesterday the White House said it would postpone any decision in order to "undertake an in-depth assessment of potential alternative routes in Nebraska." Expect that assessment to arrive after November 2012.

Obama is doing all he can to stop Canada from selling oil to us.

Instead Obama wants to have us beholden to his Muslims or his Brazilian Marxists.

Have you noticed that crude oil prices have had a sharp increase in prices these past few days?

This price increase is a result of Obama refusing to buy oil from Canada.

Get the word out.

Can someone school me as to why a refinery can’t be built up north?

There are refineries up north.

Joliet Illinois comes to mind.

This is about screwing Texas again. The ultimate destination for the oil was the refineries in Port Arthur.

That county is one of the most unionized counties in Texas.
OCAW union is strong there. Also up the road is one of the most lawyer heavy cities, Beaumont. Dims all of them.

So, baraq is screwing Texas and his union and attorney buds.

Because baraq has no emotional attachment to this country or it’s people, he will screw over dimrats also.

This is an excellent example of how “environmentalism” is greatly damaging our country. Energy development in this country has come to a halt because the idiot environmentalists won’t let us develop anything domestically. This is costing Americans jobs. Wake up, “green” is not friendly.

Next year, it may finally come down to a voter shootout between the unions and the environmentalists.

Unions corrupt our political system by supporting the election of class-warriors (e.g., such as Obama), but they do want to see more jobs created so they can solicit more dues-paying members.

Environmentalists are job-destroyers through their religious consecration to Gaia, the goddess of BANANAOAF — Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anybody Or Anything Forever.

Maybe they deserve each other, but I will place my bet next year with the unions on this issue. At least they represent people-oriented workers, helping to build things that grow our economy, and they do not include many comfortable-armchair jockeys — coupon-clipping, thing-oriented, Gaia-worshipping, eco-religious fanatics

The rest sat on their hands.

And most people can’t figure out where America’s jobs have gone in the last 40 years??

(Just asking the following as an engineer who's always interested in building the most efficient system - I hate environinnies!.)

Why isn't the oil being refined closer to the source, rather than sending it across the continent, where then the refinery output will be sent AGAIN around the continent?

These jobs would have been privately funded therefore they are not as worthy as those that come from government spending.

The Chinese have already been making investments in Canada’s oil sands regions. Watch now...the price of oil rises; a pipeline across to B.C. and the oil tankered to China; while the U.S. is still beholden to Hugo Chavez and the Middle East.

This is part of the planned destruction of America.

This traitor puppet strangles any oil drilling in this country, but let's China drill anywhere.

Coal plants in U.S. are eevil, but China builds two a week.

This Islamo-Commie Kenyan closet queen robs us of trillions, spreads it around to his cronies.

McCain took a dive and Romney-Rove will take a dive.

Cain, Perry, Bachman, Gingrich, Santorum won't lie down.

If we let this puke get re-elected it's clear we ain't seen nothin' yet.

The problem with that is you still have to transport the refined products (more than just gasoline), which would mean...more pipelines! And more trucks, more rail, etc. That infrastructure is already in place at the existing refineries.

Yup. Canada could simply choose to route the pipeline to Vancouver or somewhere else on the coast. Then the wouldn’t have to deal with the US State Department. I wouldn’t blame them at all.

Getting permits from the EPA would be my guess. Or they would just happen to find some endangered insect or bird in exactly the place where you wanted to build your refinery.

Certain refineries are set up to process specific types of crude oil. In Texas, we have refineries that are set up to process high sulfur (heavy) crude, like the Valero refinery in Corpus Christi.

Significant amounts of crude oil from Eagle Ford shale are now being produced that are close to Texas refineries, but there is talk that this oil may be exported, because the refineries don’t have the capacity to handle all of it, and it is a light/sweet crude that doesn’t require sophisticated refinery operations.

From the article:

"We'll see if [Mr. Obama] is an oil guy or a people guy," eco-agitator Bill McKibben recently warned at an Occupy Wall Street event[.]

McKibben has a false dichotomy going there. Being pro-oil IS pro-people: people need jobs, and Keystone development would provide many.

Payback to the Shiekhs who sponsored his academic rise. Obama might not be able to push America away from Israel, but this he can do.

The very last thing the Arabs want, even more than the destruction of Israel, is the end of the oil gravy train. An energy-sufficient America would leave a lot less dough for palaces, blond prostitutes, umpteen-million-dollar yachts and all the other goodies that go with being a rich Arab.

That one decision in their favor paid their investment back a thousand fold.
