Not only is he reporting on Rossi, but he's a business partner as well.

That sounds nice and honest. Maybe it is.

Of course, with $200 million in escrow (the cost of the 100 E-Cats that Rossi claims to have orders for), he should have no trouble attracting venture capitalists or (more likely, I think) individual investors.

This wouldn't be the first time a con artist used sales in escrow to scam investors. Steorn appears to have raised over €10 million from investors and venture capitalists for a "free energy" scam.

That's "Watt". (Just a little physics humor.)

The device supposedly can heat water to just over the boiling point. It won't run a steam turbine (to generate large amounts of electricity). It would be enough to heat a large building, or distill water (for example).

If it really works, it's going to be a major revolution. However, there are lots of reasons to be suspicious of Rossi and his E-Cat.

We're still waiting for independent confirmation that it actually works.

That is an acceptable statement, but it is extremely doubtful that this device can do it with any less than one megawatt of input power.

It cannot "melt down" like conventional nuclear reactors. This is because if the temperature inside the reactor cores rise beyond a certain level, the nickel powder will melt, destroying the reaction sites at which the nuclear reactions take place. With the reaction sites destroyed, the reactor cores will no longer function, and all nuclear processes will cease.

Hmm. I wonder what the licensing requirements are for a fusion/nuclear reactor.

Not for a 1 MW plant. It's like getting a 4.5 kW water heater at home (a very typical setup) that requires 1 kW of power whenever you start it up. My tea kettle takes more than 1 kW.

You would install one for a bunch of houses. Then you either distribute hot water to houses (this is often used in cold climate) or you generate electric energy from the steam. The cost of the plant would be shared, and will be less than a bunch of amaller, 5 kW units (which can't be used to generate steam anyway, they aren't allowed to run hot enough for that.)

The men mentioned are with the University of Bologna. Note that the University of Bologna has released a PRESS RELEASE stating that neither the University nor any of it's scientists have been involved with any of Rossi's experiments.

Dennis Bushnell is a scientist for NASA, and has "said some nice things" about Rossi's device. Of course, NASA determined that Rossi had not "proven his extraordinary claim".

Since Rossi and several of his former asssociates have been convicted (and served prison time) several times for fraud, it isn't all that unreasonable that they might be interested in getting in on a scam.

Your buddy, Jed Rothwell, refused to attend one of Rossi's dog & pony shows, because Rossi wouldn't allow him to bring his own test equipment. Rossi has chosen his audience carefully, especially after Steven Krivit attended a demo, and discovered that Rossi's E-Cat wasn't actually doing what Rossi claimed.

it’s clear it’s a scam

There is no reason to call it a scam or a true invention. The thing should speak for itself. There were indeed a few questionable experiments, and now it looks like a conflict of interest too, but in the end it doesn't matter. If Rossi is selling the devices, let him sell and then we'll listen to opinions of his customers.

But the real problem here is that we don't know how the thing works (or even why.) There is no solid scientific basis for anything that happens. As I said earlier, the device may be emitting unknown death rays for all we know, or it may explode like a nuke after exactly 12,345 hours of operation. The science is supposed to tell us that the device works because it has to work, and that it won't explode because of $some_other_good_reason. Right now we are in position of a caveman who found a way to make fire but has no idea what the fire is.

This is exactly how it didn't happen with fission reactors. Nobody demonstrated fission to citizens, so that citizens would pool their money and build nuclear power stations. Scientists said that the fission will work, and if anyone doesn't believe they can go to a certain place in Nevada and see for themselves. (If they still disbelieve they are free to do so at their own peril.) The whole thing was so well understood that no doubt remained, other than how to build it safe. Similarly we don't question light bulbs, radio, airplanes - because we (as a society) understand them pretty well. We will have to get to the same level of understanding about LENR before we will stop seeing it as a trick and start seeing it as a technology.

Interestingly, only Rossi, Focardi, Allan and Mills’ names are hyperlinked at that site.

I also find the “customer criteria” link to be quite interesting. Customers should be “Not effected or concerned about derogatory comments made during early stages.” Is that another way to say customers should be gullible?

Another interesting fact is that when I first became aware of the eCat, Rossi was hyping it as the next great energy revolution. It was going to make all other energy generation technology obsolete—in fact, Rossi was all but urging the immediate dismantling of all power plants. Now, according to the Leonardo website, it’s only being sold as a heater. I sense that Rossi is very sensitive to the criticisms, and tries to change his story accordingly.
