Some public figures have labeled the Mormon church as a cult. Most recently, ABC News reported that Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress applied such a label in an interview following a political gathering where Jeffress introduced a political rival to Mormon candidate Mitt Romney.
Use of such a term to describe Mormonism is highly offensive to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Cult carries the connotation of dangerous, even violent groups whose beliefs are irrational and whose practices are immoral and lawless (Koresh and the Branch Davidians, Heavens Gate, Aum Shinrikyo, and The Peoples Temple are all prominent examples) . The term cannot be applied to Mormons unless it is so broadly defined that its use could be applied to virtually any religious body.
Like racist language, the use of the word cult to describe a religion usually tells us very little about the religion, but a great deal about the person using the word. In short, it tells us only that the person using the label cult doesnt like the religion in question, or thinks it is illegitimate. Bryan Wilson, a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a noted sociologist of minority religions noted:

Just sayin'.
Not just public figures.
Bye.
IBTZ?
Nahhh, speaking as a former cult member, FR is nothing like a cult...
It’s polite to ping someone when you call them a cult leader.
People around these parts have been playing fast and loose with this term and I thought it was high time to speak up about it.
Bye, bye!
Pretty bold for such a n00b...
FR doesn’t worship a false God.
“FR is nothing like a cult...”
You make my point. I say that the LDS Church is nothing like a cult but just saying that gets me on the hot seat. One cannot even have an opinion around here unless it conforms and their are consequences for not towing the line. There’s money involved and intimidation tactics. One could make the case.
Has own version of the Bible.
Has earthly leaders who make the rules.
Has various levels. Those on lower levels are not given access to the same information as those on higher levels.
Has documentation supplemental to the Bible. You win.
I think Sandra has more than earned the right to make a tongue-in-cheek remark like that, did you check out her FR bio? —>
“(a)FReeped the peace-niks in 109 degree heat in Fresno, 7/12/02, along with other brave patriots. We should all get awards for the hottest freep! Some say it was hotter than 109 because we were standing near the blacktop at the corner of Blackstone & Shaw. Three of us FReeper ladies almost suffered heat stroke but we FReeped on. If anyone FReeped in above 109 degrees for at least two hours, please let me know. Otherwise, WE HOLD THE RECORD! (b) Stand with Israel rally at Woodward Park in Fresno, June 8, 2002; the terrorist sympathizers showed up; they didn’t like our Israeli flag much. (c) Also FReeped the peace freaks in Sacramento at 16th & J on June 11, 2002. The police showed up and ordered me to cease and desist with the bullhorn. I was so pissed, I didn’t even need the bullhorn!”
No, a cult is a group that denies the deity of Christ Jesus. Mormonism is a cult because it proclaims that Jesus is not God, but a god, a son of God, they make Him to be, not God, but an arch angle, a brother of Gabriel, Michael, and Lucifer the devil.
Mormons are not Born Again Christians and therefore are damned.
Bye? I have been FReepin’ since 1998 and have a long history of activism. See what I mean? You are ready to pull the plug just because you disagree with me.
May I ask why are you here? If you feel Free Republic is a cult... why are you posting on a “Cult site?”
Popcorn and soda pop time! This aught to be a dilly!
How did we get to the Catholic Church?
She can make whatever remark she wants. So can I. But I don't drag my personal problems out and post them on Front Page News.
P.S. How you you "earn rights" around here? Do you just have to be old or is there some IQ test? There are lots of FReepers who meet the former but not the latter.
stuff like this, and worse, is going to be mainstream should romney be our nominee. I think the militant homos are salivating at the chance for revenge against the LDS over the prop 8 victory in CA
Yep!
“Mormons are not Born Again Christians and therefore are damned. “
Yet another FReeper who condemns me to hell. Join the dog pile. Please note: My Judge is Jesus Christ, my Advocate with the Father - not any puny powerless human.
***Pretty bold for such a n00b...***
N00b? Saundra has ben on FR for a long time!
Heh, someone called you a noob too! :D
I was one of the original 100 freepers, until I changed my userID and reset to (I think) #700-something.
Kinda weird, folks don’t seem to have much humor these days :( If they don’t “get” a sharp-witted joke like yours, they cry out for zottin’ someone.
Seriously, people, Saundra didn’t intend to convey that FR is a cult! She was JOKING! Please laugh, it feels better than stressing out. She’s earned her bones here, at least give her a break.
it tells us only that the person using the label cult doesnt like the religion in question
That’s kind of a lame and poorly thought out statement. No matter what the religion is, somebody somewhere doesn’t like it.
Does that make all religions a “cult”? I don’t think so.
Religion, IMHO, is a way for ME to make MYSELF better. Being human, sometimes it works, sometimes not.
But religion for me IS NOT a way to try to make SOMEBODY ELSE better!
Because I believe in liberty and freedom of conscience.
So to me that’s where the line is crossed. Islam is a cult. Believe it, or they will kill you. That is not about man’s relationship with God, it is strictly politics and power, man’s relationship with other men, masquerading as a religion.
“. . . salivating at the chance for revenge against the LDS over the prop 8 victory in CA”
When members of the LDS Church were standing side-by-side with other Christians to pass Prop 8, I didn’t hear anyone condemning us to hell and calling us cult members. Only when it became more convenient did some of them turn on us.
I know...
};^P>
All of us always get our gospel from a rock in a hat.
That I did.
It was a trick to get people to look up her sign-on date.
I'm evil that way...
“Because I believe in liberty and freedom of conscience.”
Me, too. I appreciate your post.
For example, if you use the look at the Online Merriam-Webster definition of a cult, you find:
Definition of CULT
1 : formal religious veneration : worship
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator
5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b : the object of such devotion c : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion
One could argue that by definitions 1, 2, and 5, EVERYONE belongs to one cult or another.
But mostly what is meant in when this word is used are the negative definitions of 3, 4, and 5.
Now, to most Christian, definition 3 would be the one that is used for Mormonism, since its practices are consider unorthodox. Of course, that could be used for any sect that embraces unorthodox practices.
That really breaks MY heart!
Thank you. I also lead the FReepers - and others - who demonstrated at Gary Condit’s district office in Modesto - EVERY SATURDAY FOR OVER A YEAR until he got the boot!!! I have done a lot and it hurts to be kicked in the guts just because I disagree on a couple of issues.
Dog pile alert.

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS SECTION 132
5157, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 5866, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.
51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.

Thank you for showing up and helping to make my point.
Yup, that about describes what I believe about Mormonism. BUT, I am always polite about my disagreement. It sounds like you're trying to pick a fight with the owner of this site, if you ask me. If the atmosphere here on FR is soooo anti-mormon as to seemingly negate in your eyes the conservative and patriotic values it promotes, why do you remain a member?
The Wolf wolf endless cries....
Sandy; you CHOOSE to be in a CULT; and it's HIGH TIME that you were TOLD about it!
Again and
again and
again and
again and
again and
again and
again and
again and
again and again.
I see what you are getting at, but in a cult, you don’t have the freedom to leave. Here we can anytime we wish and no one sends the VK out to drag you back.
Scientology, a classic cult, does that very thing.
Now you’ve gone and done it! You’ve poked the Religion Pen where all the Mormon, excuse me, MormonISM haters [er truth tellers]as they like to call themselves, are located. You have unleashed a holy (small H) smattering of quasi-hatred semi-religious scripture-spam that will be forthcoming.
Poke them not, unless you are prepared for battle.
No; it shows how IGNORANT you are.
Thanks for trying. I see now that this thread - as usual - has been hijacked by the anti Mormons. Same old story. It does no good to post anything further because it will just be buried in the dog pile. Again, thanks.
I do hope and pray that some people will actually read the article and consider it.
If one does NOT toe the MORMON line; one does NOT go to the HIGHEST level of MORMON heaven.
(Maybe you are still a milk drinking MORMON.)

Not always.
(VK? what's VK? Visual kei? Is that worse than being pursued by mimes??)
When she meets Joseph Smith (pbuh); it'll be a LOT warmer than that!
JESUS: Hey Smith! Remember that boast you made about doing more than even I had done to hold the 'church' together?
JOSEPH SMITH: Where am I?
JESUS: Don't you remember? A few seconds ago you were in that jail.
JOSEPH SMITH: Oh; yeah; but where am I NOW?
JESUS: Don't you remember? Does bang - bang ring a bell?
JOSEPH SMITH: Oh; yeah - that crummy gun I had was about USELESS!
JESUS: I hope you left instructions on how to hold your church together.
JOSEPH SMITH: Dang! I knew there was SOMETHING I was forgetting!
JESUS: Looks like there's a power struggle going on down there.
JOSEPH SMITH: Yeah; there was always SOMEone who wanted the power that I held - especially over the LADIES - wink wink.
JESUS: No need to worry about that now; remember what my friend Matthew wrote down?
JOSEPH SMITH: This? At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven (Matthew 22:30)
JESUS: That's it.
JOSEPH SMITH: I thought that was mistranslated.
JESUS: Nah - it was right.
JOSEPH SMITH: Oh well; it was fun while it lasted. My buds will still get it on with the girls.
JESUS: Uh; I'm sorry; in just a few more years; your followers will cavein to the United States government and abandon the 'Eternal Covenant' that you came up with.
JOSEPH SMITH: ME!? YOU are the one that told me to do that!
JESUS: Sorry; but you must have mistranslated what I told you. What part of Do NOT commit ADULTERY did you not understand?
JOSEPH SMITH: mumble....
JESUS: What did you say?
JOSEPH SMITH: Oh, nothing.
JESUS: Well; it was interesting talking to you; but now I must get back to perparing a place for those who believe in Me.
JOSEPH SMITH: Oh, yeah; the Celestial Kingdom.
JESUS: No...
JOSEPH SMITH: The Telestial one?
JESUS: Nope.
JOSEPH SMITH: SUREly not the TERRESTRIAL one!!
JESUS: Nope. Didn't you read that the mind of man had NOT conceived of it? Paul wrote it down in 1 Corinthians 2:9.
JOSEPH SMITH: I thought that was mistranslated.
JESUS: No; it wasn't.
JOSEPH SMITH: You SURE?
JESUS: Yes. Now I must be going: what did you say your name was again?
JOSEPH SMITH: Joseph Smith.
JESUS: Hmmmm. According to my Heavenly FAITHbook, you didn't sign in as one of my friends - sorry, I never knew you.
JOSEPH SMITH: But....
