Flashback: Kerry and Gingrich Hugging Trees -- and (Almost) Each Other
The Washington Post ^ | April 11, 2007 | Staff

Yesterday's global-warming debate between John Kerry and Newt Gingrich was, as the moderator put it, "advertised as a smack-down and a prizefight." But those labels were too modest for Kerry.

"Welcome to our environmental version of the Lincoln-Douglas debates," the former Democratic presidential nominee told the crowd in the Russell Caucus Room. "We flipped a coin, and I picked Lincoln."

But something funny happened on the way to 1858. Gingrich, a former Republican House speaker, refused to play Douglas to Kerry's Lincoln, instead positioning himself as a tree-hugging green.

Before Kerry got a word in, Gingrich conceded that global warming is real, that humans have contributed to it and that "we should address it very actively." Gingrich held up Kerry's new book, "This Moment on Earth," and called it "a very interesting read." He then added a personal note about saving vulnerable species from climate change. "My name, Newt, actually comes from the Danish Knut, and there's been a major crisis in Germany over a polar bear named Knut," he confided.

...

Kerry didn't know quite what to do with his agreeable opponent. "I'm a little confused about sort of where Newt comes from on this," he said at first. Later, Kerry tried to switch places with Gingrich, branding him a big-government liberal. "You know, this is a huge transition," he exclaimed. "You actually want the government to do it. I want the private sector to do it."

By the end of the debate, Lincoln/Kerry was embracing Douglas/Gingrich as a global-warming ally, saying things such as "What we need to do is what Newt just said."

"I'll lay odds if Newt Gingrich and I were responsible for making this happen, we could get in a room and in a week, we'd come up with a program and make it happen,"

So what is the goal of the Obama Axel paid bloggers and media to plow through all GOP candidates until there is no one left but Hunstmen?

There is a guy. He's the one with the stats on job creation. The one with military experience. The one who doesn't waver on life. The one whose hobby isn't golf but shooting and hunting. The one who knows what it's like to deal with the Fed bureaucracy from a states point if view. The one who is suing the EPA.

Rick Perry.

Newt’s a BS artist. I tried to pull the wool over my own eyes and maybe settle on Newt, but my wits got the better of me. He’s a shyster. No sale.

If it’s Gingrich vs Obama in 2012, I will vote for Gingrich.

Simply put, the Republican nominee, whoever he or she is to be, will not be out to intentionally, deliberately bankrupt America and destroy the private sector free market capitalist economy.

Obama has this intent.

But he’s really good at debate questions.

Isn’t that all that matters?

Liberal partisan activists pretending to be journalists, once again meddling in conservative politics.

Go away liberal “journalists”.

You waste air.

Now there’s another guy I could get behind and he knows the issues and has led men into battle.

During the debate Perry demonstrated that America’s foe during the cold war was Russia. He must’ve said Russia three times.

I would not do that, you would not do that.

The over the decades baggage Newt has accumulated is his primary disqualification—and it is a serious one in that he has to constantly backtrack and all the very visual negative material he has provided the opposition will be hard to overcome.
However,I’m willing to—because of his political savvy—allow him to serve as President Herman Cain’s Vice President.

I’m not an Obama paid blogger and didn’t have to wade through andything to remember this incident.

I also remember the capitulations during the Clinton administration. Like one or two of the ten points of the Contract With America actually being accomplished.

To make matters worse, he married his high school geometry teacher after secretly dating in high school.

NOOT is just out for NOOT. Get over it.

Give me a break. I do it all the time. I grew up in the 80's and they were Russians. I was in basic in '90 and we threw grenades and shot at "Ivan" and he was Russian.

If Rick Perry was the CEO of Whataburger it might mean something but he's not, he's an ex Air Force Captain having served all over the world. He's the CEO of the 15th largest economy in the world, larger than India's. He's helped create an environment in Texas that has created 40% of all jobs created since the Obama experiment.

Rick Perry has a record to back up his rhetoric and he isn't out hugging trees and telling pro abort groups "You need someone like me in the Whitehouse."

If you are willing to have Newt as Cain's VP you are willing to have Newt as your President.

"I'm gonna let Newt take this one" Cain on Medicare question

"You may as well" Newt

I agree and I have very much come around to wanting to vote for Speaker Gingrich.

“”I’m gonna let Newt take this one” Cain on Medicare question”

-

Did you even watch the Cain - Gingrich style debate?

They’re comfortable with each other, and with their respective strong points.

Gingrich is a Medicare WONK. Cain isn’t. Cain smiled and handed the question deeply suited to Gingrich, while Cain thought about his answer.

I thought that moment was one of the high points of the debate. Very understandable, a moment showing intelligence, and teamwork.
