Gabrielle Giffords wants to feel ‘better’ before returning to D.C.

— Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in her first public interview since she was shot in the head in Tucson last winter, doted on her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, and called him “brave, brave, brave” as she kissed his bald head.

Giffords appears on ABC’s “20/20” show Monday night. It’s her first extended interview since the January rampage that killed six people and wounded 13.

A segment that aired on “Good Morning America” shows a thin Giffords with a broad grin as she talks about Kelly. Her husband replied that the word “brave” was the same one that came to his mind when he thinks of her — “brave and tough,” he said. Then Giffords, looking directly at Kelly, responds almost in a whisper: “Tough, tough, tough.”

It wasn’t clear from the clip beyond those few words just how fully recovered Giffords is 10 months after the shooting. Interviewer Diane Sawyer recounted how Giffords would discuss her career plans and her recovery, and the segment included some video of Giffords’ progress, from being unable to speak at all, to the point where she was ready to give a television interview.

At one point, Giffords breaks down sobbing while having difficulty relearning to speak and she and her therapist hug. In another clip, she sings into a microphone as part of her speech therapy. And in another she walks holding hands with her husband.

The television interview comes as fellow victims of the shooting came to Washington to testify in favor of a gun-control bill. They said that Giffords’ appearance represents a major milestone for them as it helps them cope with the trauma they’ve endured over the past 10 months. About a dozen survivors and family members are in Washington lobbying for legislation that would extend criminal background checks to

That’s where any sympathy I had evaporated immediately. This just becomes another cheap way that the Libs (as Ann Coulter gives so many examples about) trot out people you cannot criticize to push through contravertial laws that they want, that limit liberty for the law-abiding citizen.

So her district is still going without a vote in the House? Are the folks in her district okay with that? And has anyone ever asked her why she never insisted on police protection for herself and her constituents at her public appearance?

“About a dozen survivors and family members are in Washington lobbying for legislation that would extend criminal background checks to all gun sales and enhance the quality of the FBI’s criminal background checks.”

This is really the central point of this “emo” piece.

I’ll tell you who is “brave, brave, brave”, it’s the conservative judge who sacrificed his life to save hers. I doubt HE was for gun control, and somehow I don’t think the “reporter” would ask his surviving family members if he did or not. I am so unbelievably disgusted with the lot of them. There is no shame in using anything and everything and everybody to advance their fascist agenda. We saw the same thing with the healthcare debate.

I know I will be accused of being insensitive and mean-spirited but it seems that she can’t string together cogent complex statements or thoughts. Doesn’t that suggest that she will be unable to understand most complex processes (including understanding and voting on legislation written in legalese that exceed 1000’s of pages)? Maybe just rehabbing and living should be the best course for her. Maybe she should resign?

I’m with you. This reminds me of the Emmys (or somebody) wheeling out an Alzheimer’s-wracked James Doohan (”Scotty” of Star Trek) at the awards show. Painful, sickening ....and really, really cheap.

“it seems that she can’t string together cogent complex statements or thoughts”.

Watch and listen to Democrat Congressman Hank Johnson explain how sending too many Marines to Guam might make the island “tip over” and he’s dead serious, then tell me that it matters to democrats whether their congress person has the brain power that God gave a goose:

So on one hand, I am told about Giffords incredible recovery and then scolded for opposing her point-of-view?

Sorry, but all this tells me is that one of my enemies has made an incredible recovery.

The liberals have a real victim this time and will milk it for all it’s worth.

No doubt that the deomcrats will put extreme pressure on Ms. Giffords and her husband astronaut Kelley to get her to run again for congress in ‘12.

If they can’t get her to run they’ll run her husband.

When I clicked on this thread, I was ready to criticize anyone making a political point at her expense.

Now, I am ready to criticize Giffords, and all other statist liberals, for being so incredibly sleazy.

These people would sell their own mothers, if it would help advance a socialist agenda.

Maybe she should resign?

Highly unlikely. She's a 'Rat. Look how long they kept Strom Thurmond and Robert Byrd in the Senate. Certainly long past either having anywhere near the mental capacity to truly serve their constituents.

I”m sorry to seem so callous BUT why the hell is this woman still occupying a seat in the House? Her constituents have been without representation since January. I wish her well & am glad she’s had a remarkable recovery, but the truth is anyone in the private sector would have lost their job long ago.

She’s the perfect democrat. Since when does one need a fully operating brain or the ability to string together a sentence to vote how Nancy Pelosi says you should.

Anyone who doesn't think obama is coming for the guns if given a second term, ought to think twice about who our candidate should be. I've been saying all along, if for no other reason - Rick Perry and the great state of Texas is the way to go to protect our Second Amendment rights. This should be our number one issue. If Obama gets a second term he will have free reign and do irreparable damage.
