Now, Apple has always gone to considerable lengths to make the iPhone usable for people with vision and hearing impairments. If you’re deaf, you can have the LED flash to get your attention when the phone rings. You can create custom vibration patterns for each person who might call you. You can convert stereo music to mono (handy if you’re deaf in one ear).
If you’re blind, you can literally turn the screen off and operate everything — do your e-mail, surf the Web, adjust settings, run apps — by tapping and letting the phone speak what you’re touching. You can also magnify the screen or reverse black for white (for better-contrast reading).

The IPad was a blessing to my father, who had dementia. In his last days he found solace with its games, movies and family photos. It was the one thing that kept him entertained and his mind active.
Now the IPhone 4S, with its SIRI technology, is helping a friend of mine who has dexterity problems from a stroke.

They are too expensive, that $100 a month plus the $250 cost of the phone is money taken away from most peoples limited budgets.
I agree they are beneficial to some people with special needs.
Perhaps Obama should just give out a million or so.
Yes; it’s a question of priorities, funding, assistance and benefits.

With contract, the iPhone 4S starts at only $199, the 4 is $99, and the 3Gs is free... so where do you come up with $250? In addition, at a starting price of $499, the iPad 16GB is FAR less than any other assisted living device for communication... most are over $2000.
If you're dense as a NYT Editor, even you might be able to use the iPhone.
Are you kidding me?? Do you have any idea how much special systems cost for people with disabilities? $100 a month and $250 purchase price is PENNIES compared to other systems.
I really don’t know where you are coming from with this.. if its just a knee jerk anti-apple, or contrarianism, but your arguing a point completely without merit.
Never owned an Apple device my whole life. I just don’t see the need to be addicted to a device and a contract.

Has nothing to do with following a herd, my argument is with you making grossly misinformed statements.
If you think $100 am month and a few hundred dollar purchase price is “taking money” out of disables mouths, for a device that performs tasks for them that comparable devices that cost thousands do, you are just grossly ignorant of which you speak.
Are we entirely clear on the concept of "assistive technology"?

The contract comes with a subsidy that spreads out the cost of the device. Even without a contract, the $850 price of the most fully-loaded unlocked iPhone 4S is a bargain compared to the multi-thousand-dollar older systems that offer a fraction of the functionality.

Um, okay. That's not what's happening here. The discussion is of the best technology for the task, No one is calling you an idiot, and the polite disagreement you're getting isn't for "not following the herd," it's for weighing in without a clue.

I own three PC’s and one MacBook Pro. I’m 62 years old and have built several computers, my latest runs Window 7 with an I5 chip at 2.7 GhZ with dual hard drives and loads of software - including an Adobe suite.
I’ve owned the MBP for about one year. Now, hold on to your nuts, the MBP is a better machine!! I have never had a crash or BSOD, but I have on Windows! And gee, I’m not a cult member and I’m not going to visit Steve Jobs’ grave! And I’m not going to drive a Prius, and I’m not going to vote for Obama, and I’m not a vegetarian, and I own lotsa guns and ammo, and I would love to share cognac with Ann Coulter - - Anne? You listening?
This feature has been a real gift to me. I'm deaf in one and a half ears and it the Apple devices allow me to enjoy what hearing I have left while I have it.
As to the price?
This is the second time I've read someone telling other people how they should spend their hard earned money. I thought that was just the government's job. Didn't realize there are others assigned the task.
What people do with their money is really none of your business and if you had real manners you would know that.
Personally we use only Macs. My husband is an IT guy for three companies that use only Windows machines which he remotely controls the entire network from his Mac.
By the way the computers at his work are constantly infected with viruses even though they spend mass money on virus protection. On the plus side, job security. Thank you Windows.
