Gingrich: ‘I’m a genuine, intellectual conservative’ (gives his ideas on illegals and the border)

CARROLL — As he surged to the top of two national polls Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich spent nearly three hours at the Santa Maria Winery in Carroll on Monday, speaking with voters, taking questions, signing books and screening a movie he co-developed celebrating Pope John Paul II.

Gingrich also conducted a 10-minute interview with The Carroll Daily Times Herald and La Prensa, an Iowa Spanish-language newspaper, before going on air nationally with Fox News’ Sean Hannity from a makeshift, temporary studio...

....La Prensa asked Gingrich’s reaction to an often-repeated line from Cain about constructing a border fence with Mexico so that it can electrocute immigrants, and possibly even snare them in an associated moat stocked with alligators.

“It was a bad idea,” Gingrich said.

He added, “I hope he was joking. I’d like to think he was joking.”

Gingrich then turned to his own immigration plans, calling for control of the border in a way that is “human and practical.”

“I’m working on an immigration program which is firm but at the same time has a human aspect to it that I think most Hispanic Americans would appreciate,” Gingrich said.

Earlier, in a question-and-answer session with voters in the winery, Gingrich said he wanted to impose severe penalties for employers who hired undocumented workers. Moreover, he put forward a plan modeled on the Selective Service System used by the military in World War II in which local committees of citizens could help determine the immigration status of a city’s illegal residents based on factors like how long they’ve lived in the area, family roots and contributions socially and in business.

Gingrich said rhetoric about deporting all illegal immigrants isn’t realistic.

“I think it’s very unlikely the American people are going to break up families,” Gingrich said...

There is no difference in newt and perry when it comes to amnesty, they both wish to call it by a different name. One believes in graft and cronyism at the sate level and the other one believes in graft and cronyism at the federal level.

The more I look at this.. the more I realize... given the current crop of leaders in the GOP race, and obama. We are screwed.

I still have hopes for Cain..

But I am getting my rain coat out for when the shtf because I don’t honestly think any of them will do what it takes to fix this mess.

“I think it’s very unlikely the American people are going to break up families,” Gingrich said...

WRONG! If these illegals DO NOT want their family to be broken up, they will move back together to wherever they came from.

Of course, Newt "knows more than we pheasants do".

Newt is smart, quick on his feet, a good debater, but otherwise is a genuine phony.

Rick Perry has said you are a heartless person if you do not want to let illegals have a free education and give them credits to go to college. He’s also a complete fraud and disingenuous. When he said he couldn’t recall his 3rd dept he wanted to disband...and then he recalled it a long time later...it’s obvious someone else wrote that down for him. If he truly wanted to disband it, and it was truly HIS idea, he would of recalled it on the spot. He is another telepormpter candidate.

This is the most blatant amnesty program I have seen proposed. Even McCain can get behind this. Heck, Obama, Pelosi and Reid would probably all approve.

And just which party does he want to be the candidate for?

Intellectuals have a problem with overthinking things to the point of overly much, causing brain confusion.

Morons don’t think about much other than what they are told, and if it benefits them because someone told them so, they will go for it.

major fail

Before Republican voters fall in love Newt again, or for the first time, they need to know what he’s proposing on illegal aliens, which is nothing but another amnesty scheme with a few twists and turns that he uses to claim it’s something other than just another amnesty plan.

He even uses the tired old straw man that we can’t deport them all, and of course, doesn’t mention enforcing the law and ending the enticements which would result in gradual self-deportation.

Pro-amnesty and pro-global warming Newt. He really needs to be flushed out on these issues since he’d been flying below the radar and playing the wise conciliator and elder statement role at the recent debates.

In the end, no matter who is elected, the plan will be similar to Perry’s plan. A plan that was formed not only from experience but a paid independent study of the issue.

A complete and full fence sounds wonderful, I agree but even if whomever is elected is able to push that through—it wouldn’t happen until well into a second term, if they were able to get that second term. And it wouldn’t be completed until after they were out of office, if the plan was continued.

That is too long to wait and I think for a plan to have an immediate impact it will need to be Perry’s plan or one very similar to his.

None of the candidates are going to round up and send all illegals home. None. That just won’t happen.
