Ann Coulter: IF NOT ROMNEY, WHO? IF NOT NOW, WHEN? (No Ann NOT Rommey!)

IF NOT ROMNEY, WHO? IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

November 16, 2011
So now, apparently, we have to go through the cycle of the media pushing Newt Gingrich. This is going to be fantastic.

In addition to having an affair in the middle of Clinton's impeachment; apologizing to Jesse Jackson on behalf of J.C. Watts -- one of two black Republicans then in Congress –- for having criticized "poverty pimps," and then inviting Jackson to a State of the Union address; cutting a global warming commercial with Nancy Pelosi; supporting George Soros' candidate Dede Scozzafava in a congressional special election; appearing in public with the Rev. Al Sharpton to promote nonspecific education reform; and calling Paul Ryan's plan to save Social Security "right-wing social engineering," we found out this week that Gingrich was a recipient of Freddie Mac political money.

(Even I will admit, however, that Newt was great when he was chairman of GOPAC back in the '90s with Gay Gaines at the helm.)

Although Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- the institutions most responsible for the nation's current financial crisis -- were almost entirely Democratic cash cows, they managed to dirty up enough Republicans to make it seem like bipartisan corruption.

Democrats sucked hundreds of millions of dollars out of these institutions: Franklin Raines, $90 million; Jamie Gorelick, $26.4 million; Jim Johnson, $20 million.

By contrast, Republicans came cheap. For the amazingly good price of only $300,000 apiece, Fannie and Freddie bought the good will of former Reps. Vin Weber, R-Minn., Susan Molinari, R-N.Y., and Newt Gingrich, R-Ga.* Former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, R-N.Y., was even cheaper at $240,000.

[*Correction: After Gingrich admitted last week to receiving $300,000 from Freddie, we found out this week that it was actually closer to $1.6 million.]

So now conservatives shy away from denouncing these crooked organizations for fear of running into Vin Weber at a cocktail party.

Sorry, guys -- on the plus side, you're millionaires, but on the downside, you've earned the contempt of your fellow man.

The mainstream media keep pushing alternatives to Mitt Romney not only because they are terrified of running against him, but also because they want to keep Republicans fighting, allowing Democrats to get a four-month jump on us.

Meanwhile, everyone knows the nominee is going to be Romney.

That's not so bad if you think the most important issues in this election are defeating Obama and repealing Obamacare.

I think Ann is engaging in wishful thinking that Mitt Romney will turn conservative once he's in office. While it is probable that some of his liberal governance was due to his constituency, some of it is also due to his core values or lack thereof.

We have a perfectly fine and more electable candidate in Herman Cain and do not have to take that chance.

Barrett: Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Mitt Romney and other Democrats

Why is Mitt Romney still running for president?

Let me rephrase: Why is Mitt Romney still running for president — as a Republican?

Shouldn’t he be seeking the Democrat nomination and snapping up as many center-left votes as possible while Barack Obama forages for support on the MoveOn.org fringe?

After all, there’s incontrovertible evidence of Romney’s Democrat credentials. It’s called RomneyCare, and he merrily shepherded it into law as governor of Massachusetts. How’d that work out? Well, it’s estimated that without radical reform of RomneyCare, annual premiums for a typical family in Massachusetts could hit almost $27,000 by 2020.

Yay!

Alas, we can’t dismiss RomneyCare as just the latest sidesplitting plot twist in the hit PBS reality series “Those Nutty Bostonians.” For despite its industrial-strength tax and premium hikes, budget-vaporizing cost overruns and glacial wait times to see a specialist, RomneyCare is but a preview of coming attractions nationwide. That’s because it was the model for — you guessed it — ObamaCare. (And for the record, “hit PBS reality series” is a combination of words I never thought possible.)

More exciting still, RomneyCare, like ObamaCare, forces individuals to buy government-approved medical insurance — and fines the disobedient.

Mm mm good!

The sole defense of RomneyCare that doesn’t sound like something from a Flat Earth Society pamphlet is that, as a state law, it is at least constitutional — which federally enacted ObamaCare patently isn’t. But ruby-encrusted commemorative dustpans at the Pentagon are also constitutional. That doesn’t make them reasonable, much less affordable.

Don’t know about y’all, but all this makes me wanna rush right out and cast a ballot for the former leader of a state that sent Ted Kennedy to the Senate — eight times. (OK, I’ll grant that Massachusetts is the one place liberal enough that Romney can plausibly claim to be a conservative.)

Fortunately, what he lacks in fiscal understanding, Romney makes up for with a tibia-smashing inability to lead. Wooing voters in corn- and subsidy-saturated Iowa, an early caucus state, he declared, “I support the subsidy of ethanol. I believe ethanol’s an important part of our energy solution ... .”

And I believe for every drop of rain that falls, a baloney sandwich grows. For crying out loud, Mitt, even Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Dianne Feinstein admit these days that ethanol subsidies don’t work. If your fellow Democrats-in-spirit — Obama excepted — can let it go, so can you!

Your support for ethanol subsidies, I mean, not your candidacy.

Oh wait, I mean that, too.

Barring so gladsome a possibility, here’s the plan, Mitt: Switch your party affiliation. Pick up the backing of the not-quite-Leninist Democrats. (There are more of them than you might think!) Do your darnedest to get Zell Miller to abandon political retirement and be your running mate. Defeat Obama in the primaries and whatever jellyfish the Republicans are apt to put up in the general election. Then resign 10 minutes after John Roberts flubs your oath of office.

Zell becomes our next commander in chief, eight years of peace and plenty begin, and you go on tour to promote your book, “The Invertebrate’s Guide to Politics.”

Is it possible to be a conservative and be in favor of Mitt Romney? He’s pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay union/marriage, pro-big government, pro-taxes, etc.

Is it possible to be in favor of those things and be a conservative?

Easy answer: No. It is not possible.

Pro-choice totally kills him for me. I don’t need to go on to the others.

She’s probably right though. But the Democrats and the MSM, aided by clueless Republican commentariat are going to make sure the fix is in.

That’s the problem. We’re fighting for principle and all certain folk are concerned with is “electability.”

Ann, that obsession will neither lead to the defeat of Obama or to the repeal of Obamacare.

Don’t tell us you are surprised when he loses next November.

Um, no Ann. The media is beating up, not pushing, Newt ever since he has climbed in the polls (due to his own performance, particularly in the debates).

Everyone has a blind spot, but damn Annie yours is huge on this one. The mainstream media, and Jimmah Carter, n0bama, axelrod, every liberal, CRAVE Mitty as the nominee. He's the one guy running that they aren't terrified of in any way, shape or form.

There may be better ways to stop Obamacare than Romney, but, unfortunately, they're not available right now. (And, by the way, where were you conservative purists when Republicans were nominating Waterboarding-Is-Torture-Jerry-Falwell-Is-an-Agent-of-Intolerance-My-Good-Friend-Teddy-Kennedy-Amnesty-for-Illegals John McCain-Feingold for president?)
Well, many of us were right here. And we sure weren't pushing wishy washy Romney!

Nor were we happy with McCain.

I wasn't going to vote for him, but voted for Sarah.

I should have known that McCain and his staff (and Romney people, that snake Romney) were stabbing her and her conservative message in the back.

McCain was just using Palin to get a few more votes, and then of course his loss was blamed on Palin.

Har, he would have lost by millions more vote if he didn't pick Sarah for his VP.

To be fair, he does claim to have had a Damascus Road conversion and see the light.

The early Christians followed the huckster Paul on his claim of a miraculous conversion by mere faith - and he spent years before that persecuting them.

It will take a lot more than mere faith to convince folks Mitt Romney is now a sincere, goodness to honest conservative.

Wasn’t she pushing Christie on us just a couple months ago?

That was just a clever ruse.

She was always for Romney, and knew that Christie wasn't going to run.

That way when asked who she was for, she wouldn't have to say Romney until she was ready to "out" herself as a Romney supporter.

It was always Romney, even in the last cycle.

Only then she was campaigning for Hilliary until she decided the timing was right to push Romney.
