California colleges continue to charge Instate tuition of about $5,000. Indiana charges instate tuition at a far more realistic rate of $8,500 per year. Most other states charge more ~ even Texas (although it's still heavily subsidized by oil revenues).

When your instate rate doesn't pay to keep the doors open and the professors on the campus, then you no longer have a state university.

California could keep higher education going through the easy expedient of setting a higher instate rate.

All of which are a drop in the bucket compared to the pay and pensions of CA public sector union parasites who control this God-forsaken state.

There are tons of people driving around for there to be some sort of depression going on in California.

I suspect that there is a thriving gray and black market economy going on in California right now.

Conservatives at first might shout: Hooray! California has made their taxes and regulations so high it is great to hear that people are getting away with not paying taxes.

However, in the long run this means California becomes Greece. Voting in ever more costly programs while shirking on paying the taxes which would be necessary to fund those programs.

I believe that if California started cracking down on the gray market activity, people might think twice about voting for larger government that they would now have to financially support.

But the California government probably knows this and will refuse to crack down. Only the scofflaws will get away with not having to pay for the socialism they vote for.

Good point. We here in Texas charge Illegals about $9,000, while charging legal people (from out of state) around $25,000.

Just what is needed, then cut the CHP, CA Fire, close down all the parks if need be, cut 30,000 state government positions....Cut tax funded services for hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens from Mexico, even though they are governments favorite people. Cut teachers, cops, firefighters incomes by 25 percent, and eliminate all government unions and their lottery style tax paid retirement benefits..

Tax payers need to make as little money as possible, to choke off these destructive government polices. Refuse to contribute more than need be. Starve the GD beast. No new cars, No new loans, Buy nothing for Christmas...Just have a big feast instead...

On a brighter note did you know that BRUCE SPRINGSTIEN and BON JOVI recieve farm subsudies from the federal government, much like the oil companies DO and were grilled on at nausium by the rats in congress. How come Bruce and Bon jovi were not present and put in the hot seat, thier millionaires taking tax payer money? The hypocrites are all coming out into the light, unwillingly. Amazing isn't it ~ and even the higher Texas rate is SUBSIDIZED. You can just imagine how heavily the California rate is subsidized.

Good colleges and universities don't go broke charging enough to keep the doors open.

Berkely, the state's Flagship Campus, charges a tad more than $5500 ~ a lot more http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/general.asp?id=26

Please note that NON RESIDENTS Pay $22,000 more!

Of course that only lasts a year and then the former non residents get to pay the lower rate and save $22,000.

I don't think that applies to foreign students though ~ probably why you find the top Chinese students flocking to the far colder, spartan, rigorous and eventually more significant Midwestern enormous state universities.

That UC Berkely is almost $10,000 more per year than Yale.
