Alabama's immigration law: Jim Crow revisited
CNN ^ | November 17, 2011 | Martin Luther King III and Richard Trumka, Special to CNN

Posted on 11/17/2011 11:49:11 AM PST by mdittmar

Editor's note: Martin Luther King III is president and chief executive officer of The King Center in Atlanta. Richard Trumka is president of the AFL-CIO.

(CNN) -- It is one of the painful ironies of our time that in the same season Martin Luther King Jr.'s memory is finally honored with a memorial in our nation's capital, the state where he began to lead the civil rights movement is once more the center of an ugly conflict over racial injustice.

The passage of Alabama's anti-immigrant legislation, HB 56, invokes inhumanity reminiscent of the Jim Crow South. And the police state it has created is equally cruel.

“ugly conflict over racial injustice”

I thought it was about being in the country legally or illegally - what does race have to do with it.

So it is ok to be in the U.S. illegally because that is what MLK would have wanted?

What does race have to do with it?

Well for one thing cxalling it a racial problem automatically places 17% of the people in this country on the side of the illegals. Obama’s people.

There is no way we can grant amnesty until we stop illegals from walking in over our borders.

Amnesty has been granted before and if we do not close our borders to illegals it will have to be granted again and again.

Do we need fruits pickers? Perhaps we do but, we need them to go home when the picking is done.

Todays idea of farmers paying them under the table when they are working and government funding them when they aren’t isn’t working. Leave the kids home and come to work.
We cannot afford to educate every illegal kid who comes into the country while their parents come to work.

It all sounds good and a nice thing to do, but it is breaking us.

I have no idea, but I'm not as smart as Martin Luther King III and Richard Trumka.

If it is now racist to expect equal enforcement of the law, then I want to stop paying my taxes.

Either illegal stuff is OK for everybody, or we have racist law enforcement.

Wow! You can sure tell that he’s writing that opinion piece to appeal to the “least common denominator.” Or, were blacks “illegal aliens” too?

Day 48 Of The FReepathon
Do you Know Why?

There are loyal posters that donate every FReepathon. Some donate several times during every 'thon. But others never donate. Why?

1 My enemies haven't been zotted.
2 The owner doesn't support my candidate.
3 FR won't "upgrade" to "Like" buttons and blinky crap.
4 Someone else will donate.
5 My friend was zotted.
6 I lost my job and have no income.

Only one of those is a legitimate reason.

Support It Or Lose It

You mean person, don’t you know that you are breaking up families by requiring that temporary farm workers leave their families at home? Of course military dads are away from their families and kids for many months at a time, but that is another story.

And you would also be mean if you suggested that the wives and kids of the farm workers should not get welfare checks, food stamps etc.

Everify is the way to go both for keeping illegals out of jobs and for keeping them from get social services that were meant only for Americans. This is one of those “by their fruits you shall know them moments”. Anyone who makes any excuse or quibbles about why e-verify cannot work is part of the open borders cartels. Perry makes excuses against e-verify, so why is he still getting any support?
