Currently, ore produced at Lucky Friday Mine is processed in a flotation concentrator. This process produces both a silver-lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. The concentrates are shipped to the Teck Cominco smelter in Trail BC where the silver, lead and zinc metals are extracted.

Future headline: Obama Administration announces the suspension of all underground mining in the US pending a Two to Five year study of environmental and safety hazards to be followed by a period of sourcing all critical metals from China.

Mainly silver, though. The mine produces something like 100 tons of silver per year.

“to be followed by a period of sourcing all critical metals from China.”

Where have you been? That’s been happening for 20 years now.

Thank God, it wasn’t more serious than that. I can still remember the community sense of helplessness and despair over the Sunshine Mine Disaster of 40 years ago. Still one of the most poignant memories of my childhood.

Word at my husbands mine is there was no collapse. Guys got buried in a muck pile. One up to his arm pits, the other totally for twenty minutes and may have brain damage.
