KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 18, 2011 A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in the Nawah-ye Barakzai district of Afghanistans Helmand province yesterday, military officials reported.
The force conducted the operation after receiving a tip that insurgent leaders were meeting at a compound in the area.
After calling for the men inside to come out peacefully, the insurgents emerged and were detained without incident.
In other Afghanistan operations yesterday:
-- In the Now Zad district of Helmand province, a combined force discovered a weapons cache containing three rocket-propelled grenades, multiple improvised explosive device components, two anti-personnel mines, 20 flares and 1,400 rounds of assault rifle ammunition. All of the weapons were destroyed.
-- A coalition patrol seized a weapons cache containing 40 grenades and 500 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition in the Sangin district of Helmand province.
-- A combined force captured a Taliban facilitator, detained another suspect, and seized several assault rifles and ammunition pouches in the Dand district of Kandahar province.
-- A combined force detained several suspects while searching for a Taliban facilitator in the Sangin district of Helmand province. The security force seized one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, one machine gun, one assault rifle and multiple grenades.
-- A combined force detained several suspects during a search for a Taliban leader in the Zurmat district of Paktia province.
-- Also in the Zurmat district, a combined force captured a Taliban leader and detained several suspects.
-- A combined patrol killed an insurgent leader during a fire fight in the Marjeh district of Helmand province. Insurgents fired at the patrol. The patrol returned fire, resulting in the death of the insurgent leader. The leader was responsible for planning attacks against Afghan officials.
