Now It's Newt's Turn for an Anal Exam, But How Come It's Never Mitt Romney's?

But it's a little deeper than that. Take a step back, understand why Republican voters are responding to Newt now, as opposed to a month ago, six weeks, two months ago. I mean Newt's been in the race since it began. Why now? Why now is Newt Gingrich at the top of the heap in Iowa and in some national polls as well? Why? We are three years into Barack Obama's war on prosperity and I think Americans are coming to grips with the upside, if not the necessity, of limited government. And now that people understand or are beginning to understand the deceit that is liberalism, including its standard-bearer, Barack Hussein Obama, mmm, mmm, mmm, they're looking for somebody to clearly articulate a way out, and they want to hear it said with strength and passion and power and intelligence.

Most Republicans and conservatives (not always the same thing) will be willing to overlook Newt’s baggage (as many of them already have) for the greater good of removing the destroyer squatter from the White House. But will a largely ignorant, and easily-swayed-by-media-smears electorate, be as perspicacious?

The Dems victory plan is based on Mitt (he who has 7 houses and is stinkin rich). Think, RomneyCare.

If it is someone else, they would have to rework the plan and probably would lose the election.

If Mitt Romney is nominate, then it will be his turn. The Marxist MSM want Romney to be the Republican candidate for two reasons:

** The Tea Partiers know Romney is a Marxist-lite.

** Mormonism has some very weird practices and beliefs. Immediately upon nomination out will come the magnifying glass to examine every secret temple oath, golden plate, seer stone, the Mountain Meadows massacre, the polygamy of the FLDS and early Mormon pioneers, etc. It will make the anti-Mormon threads seen here on Free Republic seem tame in comparison ....Bet on it!

Newt would crush Hussein in any debate.

Newt is an adult. A grown man with a lifetime of education and political experience. Obama has the life experience of a teenager, which is why he behaves like one.

The Dems are terrified of the debate you described. They are terrified of Newt vs. Obama.

Newt is all mouth and NO SPINE. Where do you think the image of a the spineless GOP is derived from?

The RinoCracy ran him out of town as hard and fast as they could 12 years ago BECAUSE of his Contract With America which was the last meaningful threat to the DC status quo.

He had’nt the ability then to cash the check his mouth wrote...and if anything the Rinocracy is orders of magnitude stronger now they they ever were.

The Rinocracy is willing to hoist him up at the moment...because they have the file to use to rip his guts out right before they coronate Romney.

Everyone is being eliminated from the field except Romney. They (the media, the DNC and the RNC) WANT Romney to be the candidate. He is the one that can be beat and they will rend him to pieces as soon as he is the candidate.

We can't base our choice of a nominee on who the media likes. I also saw a comment here the other day stating that we shouldn't nominate Newt because it would energize turnout by the left. As long as we allow outside forces to dictate our choices we will continue to lose. Unfortunately, with the idiotic "open primaries" in many states, we will be allowing outside forces to help choose our nominee.

I read through it and I still don't get what Rush's answer to "Why Newt now" is. I have my answer. It's Newt now because he's the others have failed. Everyone knows it. Palin didn't run. Bachmann isn't ready. Perry isn't ready. Cain isn't ready. And so now it's Newt.

Newt had to wait because on policy, he's not much different from Romney. Both supported a mandate. Both sit down with liberals. Newt is the last refuge of the Tea Party. And when Newt fails, it's over. Romney wins.

Huckabee on Fox&Friends this morning made two observations regarding Limbaugh’s commentary:

1. Romney was vetted in 2008.

2. Limbaugh supported Romney in 2008.

==

Huckabee’s defense sounded much like he is supporting Romney this time around. In 2008, he supported McCain and played interference to keep Romney from getting momentum, however.

Romney was vetting in 2008. That was 2008. The voters have the right to requestion Romney on all the issues relevant to the current election. Romney, especially, deserves ‘revetting’ as many of his position frequently are ‘revised’ for current audiences/times.

Limbaugh did endorse Romney, but, listeners will remember that that endorsement was more anti-Yosemite Sam than pro-Romney when the race was down to two contenders and the Hucka-hander-on.

==

If we have learned anything from the various straw and preference polls it is that they are meaningless.

First, polls can be commissioned — and designed for desired results. No wonder polls of out Iowa or NH or SC or FL, etc., show the leader as Romney, Cain, Gingrich, Paul, etc.

Second, polls can be downright wrong, as we do not have a President Guiliani or President Hillary, both of whom led their respective party nominations at this stage of the 2008 cycle and both of whom were expected to win in November 2008.

Third, Thompson [who?] won nearly every FR poll, until his bandwagon crashed. He did get one Electoral Vote, IIRC.

The epic event of the decade will be Newt debating the liar and chief.

I look forward getting to the day where Newt is the candidate. We must not let the MSM decide who our candidate is. We are political elites - we make decisions based on the good of the country - not just our pocketbook. Unfortunately there is about 20% (wild ass guess) of the voters that will take whatever candidate the MSM tells them to vote for.

But the following is fairly true...
Obama will pull 40% - 45% - there are liberals that may be fed up with Obama - but refuse to vote Republican.

Right now, I feel like any Republican candidate can get 30% - so the 20% idiots need to be convinced that ObamaII is not the answer.

It is up to us to spread the word - because if we don't - the MSM will.

Well, I'm 70 and have voted in EVERY election in my lifetime. If Mit gets this nomination, I'm sitting "out" for the first time in my life. I voted for the "loser" John McCain ... I was voting AGAINST Obama, not "FOR" McCain. I won't do that again. I still feel "dirty" from voting for what I knew was a loser, and someone I didn't "believe in" ... just an "Obama lite". If "this" is what the American People want, then I must accept that the USA has turned "socialist" and spend my last days ignoring "hope and change" and resting comfortably in my memories of a country I was so proud of before.

(PS .. don't try to tell me that "staying home" will get Obama re-elected ... do you think I haven't heard that one? I'm saying this to the "Republicans" ... if you nominate this guy, you are on your own.)

Understand something, people...

We could nominate JESUS CHRIST, and today’s mainstream media would paint him as a mentally unstable Radical Right-Wing, gay-hating Fascist.

The Daily Show and SNL would be running skits about how stupid using a loaf of bread and a fish to feed the masses simply wasn’t possible, and MSNBC would be running non-stop with video recreations of Christ at the Temple as proof that Christ was unfit to be President.

E! and 60 Minutes would be running articles questioning Christ’s fidelity, while the Crazy Left would be dogging Mary Magdeline.

The View would be mocking Christ as a pansy in a dress who would take away a woman’s right to abortion.

Until you understand what we are up against, you don’t understand the problem.

Of course he would. But then, there is life after the debates, and that is where the be question regarding Gingrich is.

Recall the last 4 years of GWB, and we didn't know which side of most things he was going to be on? That would be Gingrich x 100. Gingrich is erratic and inconsistent. He is conservative at one point, liberal-on-a-couch the next.

For all his claims of conservatism, he did the Contract with America, after all, he has been the quintessential Washington beltway insider for the past decade. Like McCain in 2008, Gingrich is a great part of the problem in Washington. Like McCain in 2008, he claims he is the one to fix them.

I have thought this since, a week or so ago, I heard a clip from a Biden speech on the radio; it was just a brief clip in the 5-minute news break, but Joe was saying how awful it was that some wouldn't vote for Mitt because of his religious beliefs. I naturally concluded that all the Obama-friendly networks were -- even as he spoke -- preparing devastating anti-Mormon "documentaries" for use when Mitt got the nomination, leaving Obama and Biden free to deplore religious discrimination while their minions did the dirty work.

If all goes as planned, maybe we can look forward to a remake of the Thirty Years' War, this time in the US and featuring Mormonism. I'm sure Obama would consider it a small price to pay (of course, he considers practically anything a small price, as long as he's not the one who has to pay it!).

And when Newt fails, it's over.

Not so fast.

The first vote hasn't even been cast yet.

Look at the presumptive winners as of this time in 2008. One hardly made it into the primaries and the other failed to get her nomination, much less coronation.

News junkies are watching closely. Voters are busy with their lives and won't start paying attention until their state primaries start.

SuperTuesday should be a good indicator.

Will Romney continue with low 20's?
Will Santorum pull upsets?
Will Bachmann surprise the field of contenders?
Will Perry turn out to be the most preferential go-to guy?
Will there be a muddle and no one gets enough momentum to be the decisive nominee, and we see a brokered convention -- with the emergence of the compromise candidate -- Jeb Somebody?
How much dirty laundry does the MSM have on the presumptives?

The fun hasn't even started yet. Wait until the GOP contender is under attack by Team Obama. Then we will see blood and guts and gore.

My predictions:

Will Romney continue with low 20’s?

No, when the not-currently-paying-attention people finally vote, Romney’s numbers will be in the mid 30s.

Will Santorum pull upsets?

No.

Will Bachmann surprise the field of contenders?

No.

Will Perry turn out to be the most preferential go-to guy?

No.

Will there be a muddle and no one gets enough momentum to be the decisive nominee

No. Romney will win with numbers in the mid 30s, with Newt and Cain splitting the tea party vote, Perry and Bachmann splitting the also-ran vote, and Paul getting 8-10%.

Something like this:

Romney: 34%
Newt: 21%
Cain: 18%
Paul: 10%
Perry: 8%
Bachmann: 4%
Other: 5%

Yup. Not sure why Rush is making something more of it. Movement conservatives and Tea Party folks are looking for an anti-Romney to coalesce around and the others either didn't run or are fatally flawed and can't win. Now people are giving Newt a second look and we will see if he can hold up.

Newt is the last refuge of the Tea Party. And when Newt fails, it's over. Romney wins.

Well, I hope you are wrong and Newt can withstand the scrutiny and become a stronger candidate. But yeah, if he folds and his baggage is too much to overcome then Mitt will be the last man left standing. As of now I do suspect you are right and Romney the chameleon will be the nominee. It's not that he's a strong candidate, it's just the field is so exceptionally weak this year.

I'm supporting Newt, but really only because the alternatives are unelectable or just plain terrible. I'd hoped Perry could do well, but the man can't communicate well enough for the job. I am just hoping Newt can grow into the role of an effective candidate over the course of the primary season and at least give us a shot at winning the general election.

WHY? The MSM is rigged to take on Mittens when he gets the nod. The class warfare card is all ready to be played. They will not hit him until he is selected to lead the GOP. They did this to McCain—The Media was his friend—the Maverick—the darling of the lets cross the aisles crowd—until he got the nod. Then he became a tottering old fool. He almost reversed it by putting in Sarah Palin as VP. But they got her in some gotcha interviews and comedy skits.
BUT if the GOP selects—Newt? Maybe a new ball game.

Sad, but I am afraid I agree with you. Romney the chameleon will do better with actual primary voters than the polls indicate. The history is clear, GOP primary voters default to the safest option more often not - especially when the alternatives are so weak or untested. Newt or Cain might win in Iowa, but the pattern will establish itself pretty quickly in the rest of the states and it will follow basically along your predicted outcome.

The best we can hope for it Newt really gets his act together and grows into a very strong anti-Romney candidate. If the majority of movement conservatives and Tea Party folks get behind Newt early enough, it might change the dynamic.
