David Brooks: ‘Welcome Greece. We are going to be Greece’ (Video)
The DC ^ | Jeff Poor

Posted on 11/19/2011 11:36:11 AM PST by Rufus2007

Although many hope that members of the super committee will still reach an 11th hour deal on spending cuts before the November 23 deadline, New York Times columnist David Brooks doubts that any deal will ever be reached, now or in the future. Brooks suspects that United States is headed toward a fiscal crisis much like that of Greece. On Friday night’s broadcast of PBS’s “NewsHour,” Brooks said that despite the best possible groundwork being laid to reach a deal, a deal still couldn’t be made. “Yes, I mean, I’m hearing the exact same thing,” Brooks said. “I think the tragedy of it is, if it was ever going to work, it was going to work under these circumstances. The rules were rigged to make a deal as possible as possible as possible, which is to say there was going to be a clean vote on the House. They were going to meet in private. They had this sword of Damocles hanging over them. And they still couldn’t reach a deal.”

We can’t tax our way out of it. We have to cut spending. Yet if we do that, democrats lose power. Whatever deal democrats are willing to cut, it doesn’t include losing power.

PBS’s “NewsHour,”

...who, in their right mind, would get economic info from PBS!?

No, I think we will be a lot worse than Greece ever dreamed of being. The violence could get really, really ugly.

Yeah, is this the same David Brooks who had a hard-on for the crease in Hussein’s pant leg?

He was wrong then, and he’ll be wrong again.

American greatness will survive and defeat the forces of Hussein and his cult. No thanks to David Brooks.

If it were up to me there would be across the board cuts to every dept.Elimination of duplicating depts and outright elimination of others. There would be no welfare checks or foodstamps going out anymore, community soup kitchens serving 2 meals a day from 12pm-8:30pm and allotments of dry beans, powdered milk, rice and other staples would be given instead.Social workers displaced but he elimination could take these jobs at a much lower hourly rate and no union of course.

Brooks has been leading us toward becoming a Greece all his life..
even when Shields pissed on his leg and told him the rain was warm today.. on Lehrer(Pbs)..

Brooks would be a cretin.. a retard.. if he didn’t do it on purpose..
Brooks is part of “the Problem”... a democrat tool.. pistol whipping him would be too kind..

If “YOU” have too much grace for that.. “Step on his shoe” hardly.. and twist.. looking him in the eyes..

Hussein needs to be fired next November, we all agree.

I am perturbed, however, by those who say they won’t vote for “X” because they are a RINO.

My position: a RINO is bad. Hussein is worse. Much, much worse.

Trust me, they will reach a last minute deal AFTER “the one” makes a trip to Capitol Hill to make them see how important it is.

The GOP will cave.

This is theater.

Obama will be the hero.

I agree. America has survived many wars(one civil) and serious economic problems before. Things aren’t that good right now, but we are far from doomed.

I think you are right. I think there are a certain number of hard core leftists (communists) and then, the rest are just a bunch of idiots with too much time on their hands.

My liberal friend Steve does. He looks at PBS as a totally unbiased news source. Really. I kid you not. It's All Things Considered or bust for him each day. Union guy.

Oops. I think you qualified the question with someone being in their right mind... Is any liberal in their right mind?

A deal kicks the can down what little is left of a very short road. No deal means open warfare in D.C.

The simple truth is that the productive people in this country can no longer afford the many and vast layers of government or the services government provides. Once those services are cut and they will have to be cut. All hell breaks out. Better prepare fast cause the stuff and the fan are in close proximity.

The problem is there are politicians trying to cut that deal. Put the same amount of (knowledgable) citizens in a room and a deal will be reached in a couple of days.

Anyone with half a brain could have predicted the failure of the Super Committee. Both sides will not move from their positions enough to make a dent in the financial situation.

Rino or not, B rooks is right on this one. No deal. And they will finesse over the projected auto-cuts somehow.

It will prove for once and all that the politicians can’t do this job. And if not our elected officials, who will?

I hate the GOP. They agree to asinine deals from the Democrats that any Freeper will tell you is doomed to fail, then whine when it fails.

We need street fighters. I am tired of capitulation.

All the GOP House had to do was to hold the debt ceiling hostage to immediate deep spending cuts. That’s it. That’s all they had to do. They gave it away.

I totally agree with you. When the economy finally collapses and the American People see the dollars in their wallets worth nothing, their retirements wiped out, gas at $20+ a gallon, groceries literally too expensive to purchase or unavailable, their houses worth nothing and yet they are unable to make payments, unemployment rocketing ever higher, our troops still on expanding foreign fields while illegals overwhelm our system and terrorists begin to strike us at home (and they will), while the politicians remain in their estates with their perks, their pleasures and their possessions safe from the turmoil in “flyover country” — you’re right, it will get VERY ugly. The people will march on Washington, District of Corruption as never before.

I could not have put it any better than that. Well thought out. I wonder if I can escape to the Philippines. My mother in law owns rice fields. Who knows if it would be better?
