Occupy Memphis member Mallory Pope had just finished telling a group of about 75 tea party followers Thursday night that politicians should not allow themselves to be influenced by lobbyists and unions when she received an unexpected invitation.
"It sounds to me that y'all ought to be joining us," said Jerry Rains, a 64-year-old computer programmer and tea party member. "You have a lot of the same goals we have, which is to take our country back."
Pope and fellow Occupy Memphis protester Tristan Tran had a lively, sometimes strained and confrontational, but mostly civil discussion with members of the Mid-South Tea Party at a municipal meeting hall outside Memphis.
The factions saw eye-to-eye on some issues and clashed on others. And, while the young speakers didn't change many minds, they did earn praise from the tea party members for their passion, honesty and courage.
The 21-year-old University of Memphis students had been invited by the tea party group to talk about the goals of the Occupy movement. The invitation was extended after a discussion between members of both groups on the tea party's website, meeting organizer Jim Tomasik said.
Occupy Memphis set up camp last month at Civic Center Plaza in downtown Memphis, within view of City Hall and federal and county government buildings. Their numbers have ranged from a dozen protesters to 100 or more, depending on the time of day. They have had no clashes with police and city officials have said they will not evict the protesters as long as they remain peaceful.

Then he said the Occupy groups should go home and work within their community to try to bring about change.
"Get people elected," Gregory said."
Mr. Gregory, don't we have enough socialists in office already?
OWS is an Obama front group. They are shaking down corporations for Obama2012 donations. Next they will surround the Capitol building for days on end and demand the GOP bow down to Obama. (Reichstag fire)
There is no common ground.
Be careful what you wish for.
Be vigilant for traitors.
How anyone beyond high school age would believe this is "common ground", is deeply disturbing. What the TEA party and what the OWS miscreants want to do after they "take our country back" couldn't be more different.
Its not like we have enough socialists in office.
Here’s the joke: what do OWSers and tea partiers have in common?
I’m a Tea Party member. I want nothng to do with OWS. All attempts to meld the two together are...epic fail.
No Tea Party group should even get close to OWS or allow themselves to remotely sound affiliated with them.
They (OWS) espouse socialist/progressive goals...more government...end the free market...class warfare...etc.
They are being used and manipulated by the DNC, Unions, and Obama to try and help his re-election...by espousing their leftist/progressive gaols and punctuating class warfare to deflect balme from Obama if they can...and by causing bedlam and chaos and rioting if they must.
Again, the Tea Party, which has been effective as Patriotic grass-roots Americans should not come anywhere near them...or reach out to them. They are a poison pill.
The media continues to e-fellate the OWS and Obama.
Make no mistake - the OWS wants what other people have without doing anything except beating drums and chanting lame slogans.
They are nothing like the Tea Party, which believes in self-sufficiency and doesn’t engage in class-warfare and criminal behavior.

Here’s the announcement from the tea party’s site, http://www.midsouthteaparty.org/main.html

Come to otain a more informed point of view. Ask questions to get
both “Occupy” and Tea Party points of view. Walk away with a better
understanding of both groups.
DON’T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!
More as time allows
WHAT HAS BEEN SEEN CANNOT BE UNSEEN.
By TEA Party they do me Paulbots.
Just the kind of story the Left will love, to support their constant media propaganda comparing OWS to the Tea Party.
“Occupy Memphis member Mallory Pope had just finished telling a group of about 75 tea party followers”
Hard to get past the first sentence.
One does not ‘follow’ the tea party, there is no leader.
But yes occupy cowpies are “members.”
Of course is’s an AP story.
Why would the Tea Party associate itself with OWS?
This is like something a Republican would do, try to make the other side ‘like us.’
Suggesting OWSers go home to help people elected is, frankly, stupid. They would be electing the people the Tea Party is trying to defeat.
“Why would the Tea Party associate itself with OWS?”
I have no idea, and it is in my home city of Memphis.
The only thing in common is that both groups are upset
with what is happening in the country, but for opposite
Tea Party wants the good old traditional America.
OWS wants a full blown Communist society
You put it perfectly. I did detect that cringe-inducing patronizing tone of “I don’t agree with you but I applaud you for getting involved” in some of this.
Well, that nice-nice stuff doesn’t work with me. Tea Partiers want to keep the money they earned; OWSers want to take more of that money from them. I know what I’d say to this group, and it wouldn’t be anything like what the TPers here said.
