Samantha got straight As, high SAT scores and participated in extracurricular clubs and student government during her senior year in high school.
The hard work paid off the East Harlem teen was accepted last spring to five top-tier liberal arts colleges, including her No. 1 choice, Wesleyan.
But her hopes of spending four years on the leafy Connecticut campus were dashed all because she couldnt afford the hefty tuition and her immigration status made her ineligible for financial aid at private universities.
I was really lost. I didnt know what was going on. I was a mess, recalled Samantha, whose last name the Daily News is withholding at her request.
The whipsmart teen was born in Mexico and is among the 345,000 undocumented students in New York State.
Like her, many have attended the states public elementary and high schools without reprisal, but their pursuit of college degrees at elite schools has been cut short by state and federal laws barring them from government grants and low-interest loans.
State education officials have been pushing to give more rights to immigrant kids since 2002, when they granted them in-state tuition discounts at public universities.
More recently, the state Board of Regents endorsed the federal Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act in October, which would bestow resident status on immigrants who earn high school diplomas and go on to college.
And last Monday the Regents announced a new bill called the Education Equity for DREAMers Act, which would allow undocumented students to apply for state college tuition grants of $5,000 for each school year.

The only taxpayer funded subsidies ILLEGAL aliens should receive is a free bus ride back to the border.
Liberals want to give illegal aliens subsidized tuition as a reward for breaking our laws.
The American people are opposed to DREAM Acts but our corrupt elite disregards them.
There no undocumented immigrants, stupid.
There are ILLEGAL aliens! But the MSM changes the definition because they think the American people are stupid.
Like we don’t know who they are.
My apologies. That was heartless of me.
The students themselves are also illegals.
lol
And if they graduate, it’s illegal to hire them. That is smart... I guess they’ll need amnesty....
Being served up next. The next big pet Democratic-RINO project.
And liberals in New York wonder why their taxes are through the roof, why property taxes for just a house can exceed $12,000 a year. Yeah that’s right Lemmings, follow the words of Nancy Pelosi while you scrape by and she makes millions more from insider trading. Vote Democrat liberal because supporting foreigners is Utopia! Follow the words of a millionaire like Ted Kennedy who never held a real job in his life; Every 3rd world National on earth needs to be supported by the USA. No need to worry, your taxed social security check will ensure that you can buy enough dog food to make sandwiches and feed yourself every Tuesday if you save your pennies.
In Mexico being an illegal alien (e.g. undocumented gringo or Guatemalan) is a felony, i.e. you go to jail for a long time.
Samanthas mom, Margarita, is not an immigrant, she is an illegal alien.
So is Samantha and her siblings.
If Samantha is smart, she knows she can only blame Margarita for her situation.
ROFLMAO!!!
It’s nonsense that she would be ineligible for financial aid. The federal and state grants would be replaced with private scholarships. All the top schools have these in abundance.
Hey this ones got a poll to freep! Go drive some more nails in the coffin!
69% say no way!
DREAM Act
Do you think undocumented immigrants, like Samantha, should get financial aid to pay for tuition
Yes, she deserves it!
No, the U.S. should not give illegal immigrants private school educations.
Maybe, on a case-by-case basis.
This is so phony.
Evidence abounds that these “impoverished” illegals purchase multiple identities for thousands of dollars.
The parasites attach themselves to the US gravy train....each identity pocketing our tax dollars at an alarming rate.
Some of the money is wired to Mexico——for their retirement in beachfront condos.
It’s easier to hand them money than to checkout their
conniving ways.
Perry’s political prostitutes are going to be very upset with you.
Heck, give them some bogus paperwork, send them to Texas, and we’ll be more than happy to educate them on our dime.
States in the Northeast should not be stuck with these bills, when other states are more than happy to show that they have more ‘heart’.
Exactly. That will be the next mantra. “We’ve spent this money educating them. What a waste it will be if we don’t give them citizenship, so they can come out of the shadows and become productive citizens...blah, blah, blah.”
Freep the poll. It is currently 80% no.
Open border supporters always find these illegals that have succeeded to spotlight for the cause that the taxpayers should pay for their college or whatever they need paid for this week for ALL illegals. Of course the desired end result is amnesty and citizenship for all the illegals. We are supposed to believe there is no way the government can find and deport enough illegals to enforce our laws- “can’t deport them all” mantra. The same folks seem confident they can locate, background check, and issue citizenship to all those they can’t find to deport. The issue is they are here illegally and should receive NO special favors, and the taxpayer should NOT have to finance them in any way.
Why don’t the supporters of open borders start a college fund for these students? Put their money where their mouth is and take care of this “problem” without asking those that do not support open borders to pick up the tab. While they are at it they also need to start a health fund, education fund, welfare fund, etc.
ROFL
Perhaps someone should give the family bus fare to Texas.
Why doesn’t poor, poor Samantha go to college in MEXICO??????
