Skip to comments.George Will Dismisses Newt Gingrich, Scoffs At Idea That He Is A ‘Historian’

George Will really doesnt like Newt Gingrich. On the This Week round table this morning, Will began his comments on Gingrich, now a frontrunner, by stating that his candidate embodies everything disagreeable about modern Washington, going on to laugh at the idea that Gingrich was hired by Freddie Mac as a historian, and, as a final blow, speaking more glowingly of even Rep. Ron Paul than of Gingrich.

Actually this is good news for Newt. If George Will hates him he must be doing something right.
Will and Newt are both posers.
Neither is really conservative.
Both are little more than opportunist insiders.
ahahaha - yep on both accounts.
Used to like George - many years ago.
Can’t listen to him now
I agree with that assessment. If you recall, Will went out of his way not to support Reagan in ‘80 until the last minute. He was a Howard Baker guy for crying out loud.
Will is on the side of the liberal angels.

Gingrich’s Conservative Bonafides Proven
George will wrote a column years ago pining that we no longer need a 2d Amendment! He is a left wing RINO....
From the same site: Paul Krugman, George Will, Megan McCain, and Jay Leno don’t like Newt.
I consider that to be all positive for Newt.
“If this dude is a conservative, then I can shoot 59 every time I can tee-up at Augusta National.”
Interesting cartoon. Mother Jones? When did Conservatives frown on making non-lobbying money by establishing a firm that represents all comers who pay their fees and proceed legally? Are we buying into the anti-free marketplace of ideas now? George Will is getting to you, huh?
“From the same site: Paul Krugman, George Will, Megan McCain, and Jay Leno dont like Newt.”
They all on FR now?
A lot of the posters here don’t seem to want to win this election, either.
Did you read what he said about Newt? Do you have a response? Will gave a devastating, and wholly accurate, rendition of Newt’s big government record. As to historian, well I suppose....a “historian” who couldn’t get tenure at a third rate college.
And Will's critique of Newt's big government record (support for ethanol subsidies, etc.) is wrong because.....?
Who is your choice!
Me here is my choices as of today.
Gingrich pursued higher education....He received a B.A. in history from Emory University in Atlanta ...in 1965...a M.A. in 1968, and a PhD in modern European history from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1971. ... Gingrich worked early on in academia, as an assistant professor of history and geography at West Georgia College....years later, in 1993, he taught a class, Renewing American Civilization, at Kennesaw State College in Georgia.
Yep - obviously no historian...
Ron Paul, of course. Certainly, not Newt, a defender of the prescription drugs boondogle, TARP, No Child Left Behind, global warming nonsense....need I go on? Since I answered your question, please answer mine. Who is your favorite candidate?
That’s odd considering how often Nancy Reagan has said nice things about George Will.
It was at Will’s house that Obama dined with Will and other “conservative” MSM’ers, e.g., David Brooks, Charles “The Kraut” Krauthammer, Kudlow, etc. early on in his administration to give them his rules of conduct. So, that gives us a good idea where Will is.
LOL. George Will is a pathetic, miserable, tiresome and tedious Beltway whiner.
.But as to not getting tenure. Not many conservative/republicans could/can. We know our colleges are a bastion for liberals/socialists.
That may be on his plus side - we know it certainly wasn't because he's stupid.
In one of the debates (or was it a speech somewhere?) Newt listed the first 5 (?) executive orders he would issue as POTUS, all of them realistic and achievable, unlike the vague promises of all other candidates (999 anyone?) requiring legislation, compromises, etc. That’s enough to hold his feet to the fire.
I am voting for Ron Paul in the primary gladly. He is the modern day Barry Goldwater most of us wish we could have voted for.
screw the RInos and other big govt apologists.
Like I said before about Ron Paul, I consider him 95% conservative whereas most people label him as a lunatic. Maybe people only want someone who is 50% conservative (transitional???).
Anyway, it looks like the candidate list is being whittled down to lesser of the evils. An improvement over the current loser in office.
giving testimony in 2009
I have always thought Nancy wasn’t 100% on board with Conservatism like Ronald. Over the years she has done and said things that just give me that impression. Plus look at the two Commie kids.
So George Will is questioning Newt's credentials as an historian? Newt has a Ph.D. in history from Tulane University. Where did Will get a Ph.D., and in what field--baseballology?
my vote for Ron Paul is with the understanding je won’t get 100 percent of what he wants. But of he gets 50 percent, it’s better than the 10 or 25 percent of the others.
But Freddie Mac didn't hire him as a historian.
I am not a fan of Newt, but the dig about tenure indicates you don’t have much experience with humanities departments. White men, let alone conservative heterosexual white men, have a very hard time getting tenure. Conservative whites almost never get tenure - if they get hired at all.
I think George Will is annoyed that if Newt Gingrich is in the vicinity, then Will isn’t the smartest guy in the room, anymore. George may be a RINO but he makes some valid points regarding Newt. I respect Gingrich but I simply do not believe he is a conservative in any real sense and I don’t trust him. Those who claim that because we hold politicians posing as conservatives accountable for their positions and actions, we ‘don’t want to win the election’ are succumbing to the tired old ‘they’re the best we can do’ mindset that gives us ‘compassionate conservatives’ and those who may be conservative on a few issues but overall, tend to look to government as the ultimate ‘answer’ to every problem. Newt Gingrich is bold, clearly intelligent and quite outspoken, which are definitely attributes. But his past actions have shown that he can be mercurial and occasionally downright embarrassing. I believe that any one of the GOP presidential primary candidates are able to defeat the utterly failed Barack Obama but I would prefer to have the candidate that beats him be a conservative, not an unpredictable neo-RINO. That’s why I support Herman Cain.
Paul to Iran, why can't we be friends, why can't we be friends (War)......maybe he and the Ayatollah can sit down and puff a hookah together, eh?
So, he thinks he is worst than burnt toast!!!
Thank you for this. It is amazing to me that the some people on this forum take the MSM critisim of Newt hook, line, and sinker.
The MSM and beltway RINOs are attacking Newt for a reason. They know he can win and he has a proven track record of reducing the size of the federal government. He was demonized in the 90s for doing so - by the left.
Newt is smarter than Will, and Will knows it. But New alienated a lot on people in DC. That he got so much work is testimony to his knowledge of Government. Newt likes to think of himself as the American Churchill. I take his point. Churchill had many faults, personal and otherwise. A dowager one said of “Winston” that he had no antennae. That sure applies to Newt. He had been kicked often enough in the shins, however, that he realized needed to learn how to “take it.” Not as eloquent as Churchill, but more fluent.
I prefer Paul over Romney. He is a smarter version of Harry Truman.
Trinity College (B.A., 1962)
University of Oxford (B.A., M.A. (Oxon)
Princeton University (M.A., PhD (1968)
I note that you used the elipses to omit the fact that he couldn’t get tenture at a third rate college.
What in the world would George Will do with facts? LOL
Getting tenure usually isn’t the problem for white males (or conservatives)....though getting hired often is!. In any case, I’d like to see any evidence (does Newt allege it?) that he was denied tenure at West Georgia College because of his views or race. Please note that he never published his dissertion or an academic book before leaving that position. Did he publish any articles in refereed journals? Curious minds would like to know.
Yep. I for one, though am tired of “nice guys” in the WH. I want someone who tells us what he’s thinking (which is what gets Newt into so much trouble) and one that doesn’t have antennea - or, in his case - a filter between his thoughts and his mouth. I think some of the big mistakes are a result of big ideas. We don’t need Jimmuh Carter in the White House.Newt is a dffient man than RR, but Newt handded him arguably the best strategy in the history of debates with the “are you better off than you were four years ago” attack when he was a FRESHMAN in Congress. That kind of tactician doesn’t come along often.
