Sixteen Detroit police officers failed to finish their scheduled shifts on Friday. The unannounced work-stoppage was an apparent protest against the Detroit mayor's planned reductions in pay for police, one part of a larger package intended to address the city's financial crisis.
The apparent protest was a "concerted effort isolated to one shift at one district," Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. explained in a statement. The police officers left during their 4-8 pm shift on Friday, according to the Detroit News.
Earlier in the week, Mayor Dave Bing warned police officers to expect a 10 percent pay cut in a speech outlining a series of budget control measures. "I do not want to cut boots on the street but we need police and fire to accept the same 10 percent cut in salary that the rest of our city employees have accepted," Bing told city residents on Wednesday. "Adding that savings to the cuts instituted across all city departments will save a total of $13 million dollars this fiscal year."

Just in time for Happy Hour... Unbelievable.
Dave Bing may be a democrat but he’s also a businessman and it shows.
Did anyone notice.
Absent without authorization, leaving the public at risk.
Fire them.
Atlas Shrugs.
Sorry, the government's union b***h who negotiated the contract with the union agreed that they can't be fired for labor actions. Right?
A four hour shift? If that is what it is, that's no shift. It's a break from your time off.
I wonder if the city will riot like it did in Robocop...
People want to be paid for the work they do. There are probably other ways that the mayor can save money for the city, but he won’t let his pet projects go.
thankless job to begin with.
ummmm are they allowed to just walk out? why can’t they be replaced if they don’t want to work?
Did anyone notice.
The donut shops.
Looks like staff reduction.
16 less officers-16 less pensions.
That’s how you sharpen the pencil.
welcome to the 3rd world
Just imagine what would happen to them in the private sector.. but they’ll be coddled.. and of course.. payed. And their union thugs will get fawning face time on local networks.
He doesn’t have much freedom to screw up. He has X dollars to spend and NO ONE will loan him any more.
Think Ronald Reagan and the air-traffic controllers. Maybe Dave Bing has a similar set of stones.
Agreed. But it's a job the taxpayers of Detroit are paying to have done. LEOs deserve support when they're putting their lives on the line. But when they walk off the job, the life that is on the line isn't theirs. It's those they are supposed to serve.
Where is the money to pay them? Gone. You can’t get blood out of a stone.
Sounds like an illegal wildcat strike to me. They were in violation of federal law.
Dave Bing never was a businessman. His original business endeavor quickly went bankrupt. He then got a position as a minority supplier to GM and other companies. Bing's “business” would sell GM products produced by white owned businesses to which Bing would do absolutely nothing but add a mark up to the price. This is what almost all minority suppliers did. Some just took the payments and then refused to pay their white suppliers.
When I lived in Michigan all the big companies and government purchasers were required to set aside a certain portion of their business to selected minority suppliers.
Bing may be more capable than most Democrat politicians but he was never a businessman.
Soooo,
Don’t cut their pay,
eliminate their positions.
Hey look...there should be 16 vacancies coming up in the Detroit PD...coincidence?
I suspect it would make news if he took action. And probably draw some applause.
All I can find on pay scale for Detroit police is from 2007 and it shows them starting at around $47,000 per year.
All I’ve got to say is that society creates a need for police and society can end that need if they wish.
I say tax the 1%’rs. By God make them pay their fair share !!!! Uh what...... Oh, there aren’t any more 1%’rs that live in Detroit anymore. Well...uh...I know, force those capatitalistic pigs out in Gross Pointe Shores to move back into Detroit and THEN tax the snot out them.
As long as I can get an SUX 2000 out of the deal...
They Got Home Safe
Bingo.
“Fire them.”
And just who will take their place? Detroit makes most other places look like a Sunday School picnic. It’s going to be “interesting” when all of these unionized “public safety” people start having to behave like their private sector bretheren.
Let’s see just how long the RATS can continue to pay these turds more than they are worth before the taxpayers call a halt.
Knowing how Public Employee Unions operate, they probably will cover the absenteeism with OVERTIME, and those who walked off will be paid, anyway (even if a Grievance must be filed), and backpay is re-instated as a result of "Contract Requirements".
Taxpayers, as always, are the un-limited funding Public Unions extort.
They have a 4 hr. shift?
Easy solution - issue them IOU’s for pay and when the tax $ come in send it out in porportion of all the other Government Dept.
wow this is exactly the scenario from the first robocop movie.
No, it won't even be noticed.......The DPD is now an irrelevant entitity in Detroit and their only function is to appear on scene AFTER a murder or assault has occured with an official on hand to answer any questions the local news crews may be asking.........
Any alleged shootings will result in the DPD telling the assailant to file a report the next day if the shooting occured during the night time hours and no one was shot.........
A good friend of mine's daugher was such a target about 3 years ago at the intersection of Outer Drive and Cadieux at approximately 11:30 p.m. as she was returning home from her afternoon shift as a nurse.........
Others would like to be paid for that work too, and are willing to accept less if the current occupants of those positions won't.
there is a reason it is the LOST city of Detroit.
in 20 years detroit will be a ghost town.
I thought it was a 6000 SUX? That was the only scene that vividly stood out in my mind when I watched that movie and I laughed out loud..........
All I know is I wouldn’t be a cop in Detroit for lots more than that.
You could pay me twice that to just move there and I wouldn’t do it.
Society creates the need for cops and society can eliminate the need if they really want to.
We eliminated my town’s little police force a few years ago and now we have a county cop roll through about once a week. In my opinion, even that is unnecessary since we’re pretty much crime free.
little crime in my private community other than maybe white collar stuff.
Course outsiders can always see stuff and want to take it.
Which sets up a downward spiral of wages. If I’m making $10 an hour, you fire me and hire someone for $7, what’s to stop you from firing them and hire someone for $6? Where is the floor for wages? I mean... I don’t like cops in the least. But why should we continually accept doing the same work for less and less money?

The floor is the point where nobody of any quality is willing to take the job. As an employer, you expect a certain quality of an applicant, if there is nobody of the quality you expect willing to work for the pay you are offering, then you offer more.
Because the mention of cutting the wages or laying off the most important employees in a community (firefighters included) when budget cuts are required, is designed to promote the most outrage from the citizens who would normally support such cuts and defer attention from the city govt. employees in all other non public safety departments who should be considered useless overhead and the real targets of those cuts......
