Super Committee Fails to Reach Deficit Agreement
National Journal ^ | 11/21/11 | Billy House

The bipartisan congressional committee tasked with finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction announced on Monday it cannot reach agreement by the Wednesday deadline, a stark if not unexpected admission that its efforts have ended in failure.

"After months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committee’s deadline," the co-chairs, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said.

The declaration came late Monday afternoon in a written statement from the 12-member Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction despite last-second discussions in closed-door meetings.

The committee, in the end, could not resolve that Republicans would not go as far as Democrats wanted on allowing more revenue raisers, and Democrats did not want to move on entitlement reforms. Intense messaging by both political parties on which was more to blame is surely to spill out for days, if not months.

Gingrich is a poor prophet if he thinks the Congress is able to making “savings” through the regular approach. It can not and will not. The best of all possible alternatives now for conservatives (at least if they truly want cuts) to pull the triggers and let sequestration take place. I know that there are some here who view the Pentagon as a sacred cows....but they need to realize that we’re broke and that there CAN NOT be any sacred cows on the spending side.

Let him blame who wants. Our response should be to call his bluff and demand sequestration.

With Patty Murray on Commiemitee You expected What?

Patty gives a box of rocks a good name. Is her district near some toxic dump or somethin’? Constituents there must be suffering of exposure to it.

I’m not paying close attention, but if automatic cuts happen automatically, how can we be against all that?

Sounds great.

Defense is not a sacred cow to Republicans. It’s men and women who fight and die for us. It’s the families of those men and women who sacrifice more than people know to support their troops. It’s disabled vets. It’s PEOPLE. You know that’s what they will cut first if they cut “defense”. More down sizing and more of our troops on extended tours of duty while their families hold it together back home. Makes me sick when people view defense without considering the brave men and women who will be affected by the Democrats wet dream of gutting our military.

The ‘super commeittee’ needed to be selected like a jury is selected: each side gets to de-select (kick-off) the those on the other side.

Did anyone notice they said “release to the public”?

I’m thinking they will do some 11th hour deal that screws us all.

I noticed that also, and think you are right...

The Rats will gut the DOD making the country less safe and the Repubs will be slammed for killing off granny, if they insist on the entitlement program cuts. The country is doomed. The majority has decided that it can vote itself largess from the public trust what a treasonous bunch of hypocrits the libs are, they would allow the country to default for their own political gain.

correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t there some kind of tax credit that will expire if these clowns don’t reach an agreement???? that is an automatic tax increase, which is what the dems wanted all along... and the pubs will get blamed for increasing taxes...sound familiar??? solution is extreme, but doable... if your congresscritter was not serving their first term in 2010, FIRE THEM.... they are socialists... don’t waste your breath trying to tell me different.. Fire Them.. Fire Then All... the short, the tall the big and the small.. FIRE THEM ALL... that is the only way change will occur

The whole thing was a show. Rush talked about how there are no cuts. It was only a decrease in the percentage of spending increase. These guys have no ethics.

You sound like the people who want to cut school budgets by knocking off the band and sports programs because they think that will change the public’s mind about eliminating a bunch of supervisors. The Defense Budget could start with bringing home all the troops in Germany, Korea and Japan to defend against Russia without harming the troops one bit. There is fat everywhere in Washington.

I am not sure about the tax credit.

I am sure that the GOP should have known, if they didn’t, what was going to happen. They gave the Democrats what they wanted in raising the debt ceiling, notice that isn’t being mentioned in the news reports about this.

This is a total victory for the Democrats. They got the debt ceiling increased by $2.5 trillion to cover a 16-month period. And now after having raised discretionary spending by 40% over the last three years, they only face a cut of $50 billion. In return, they get $50 billion in defense cuts - something they have always wanted, but never could get Republican cover for it. Now they have that cover. And on top of that, the infamous 'Bush Tax Cuts' will automatically expire.

Review:
Democrats get to keep the huge spending increases implemented in 2009 for the duration of Obama's term.
Deficit spending will remain at $1.8 trillion for the next 12 months.
Bush tax cuts get repealed.
Defense spending gets cut.
Republicans get the blame.

Once again, John Galt's axiom is proven true. In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit.
