Boehner Commends 'Dignified and Statesmanlike' Negotiations of Supercommittee (Praises Patty Murray)

(CNSNews.com) - House Speaker John Boehner is among the lawmakers expressing disappointment that the 12-member Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction could not agree on a way to accomplish its assigned task, which was to reduce the federal budget deficit by $1.2 trillion.

"While I am disappointed, the House will forge ahead with the commitments we have made to reducing government spending and removing barriers standing in the way of private-sector job creation," Boehner said in a statement issued on Monday after the supercommittee announced its failure. "I commend both of the panel's leaders, (Republican Rep.) Jeb Hensarling and (Democratic Sen.) Patty Murray, for the dignified and statesmanlike manner in which the committee carried out its difficult negotiations," Boehner added.

While the bipartisan supercommittee could not agree on a way to narrow the federal budget deficit, it did agree on two things: '[W]e end this process united in our belief that the nation's fiscal crisis must be addressed and that we cannot leave it for the next generation to solve," members said in a statement issued on Monday.

The supercommittee also expressed the hope that Congress can now build on the work that its members started -- but failed to finish.

Democrats quickly blamed the supercommittee's failure on Republicans, who refused to go along with a trillion-dollar tax hike.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, writing in USA Today, said Republicans "never found the courage to ignore Tea Party extremists and millionaire lobbyists" who opposed any and all tax hikes. Reid cast Democrats as champions of a "balanced approach," which means tax increases:

Precisely.

Bohner has been such a titanic disappointment as Speaker. Singlehandedly he has frittered away the Conservative victory in 2010 and wasted the energy that was present in the electorate for positive change in D.C.

The Crybaby is a Democrat, pure and simple. That he is allowed to remain in a leadership position in the Republican party, even after the 2010 elections, is an indictment of the entire party. If this is what we have to work with, it means little who wins the presidential election, Democrats will still control both Houses of Congress.

Compare Boehner’s statement with Pelosi and Reid’s. THAT is why we will never win.

Aw, c’mon. Lighten up. Boehner is just showing that he does have a sense of humor.

Yep. Imagine Boehner-McConnell-Romney as the respective leaders- debt continues to pile up, Boehner is still terrified to pass anything of substance, Obamacare (if it's upheld) will be firmly in place as Boehner makes more half-hearted "attempts" to undo it, etc.

It's all over by that point...

You are correct. See my tagline. Until we patch the holes in our bucket, there is no use in continuing to fill them. Primary this mannikin. If he wins the primary, third party him.

“John Boehner gets primary challenge”

If he really wants to get anywhere he’ll have to do more than a one-issue attack, IMHO. There’s a LOT to work with here, if he’s at all serious.
