It is unfortunate that the placement of small crosses on a tower at the Texas A&M University-San Antonio was met with such a backlash from those offended by the religious symbolism.
The small crosses on the Torre de Esperanza, or Tower of Hope, located on the boulevard leading to the public university were meant to represent the Spanish missions, those historic gems located on the city's South Side.
An adjunct criminology professor initially raised questions about the crosses on the tower, which was built on private land with city money.
Then last week a Washington-based organization that promotes the separation of church and state sent city and university officials letters asking for their removal.
One would have expected more open-mindedness and understanding of why the crosses were included in the design of the public university's entrance tower. A university, after all, is supposed to be a place where differing views can be expressed and discussed.
The crosses were not placed on the tower to indicate a preference of one religion over another or as an attempt to proselytize but rather as a symbol of the rich culture of that area. They were not oversized, multi-ton crosses carved out of stone; they were a detail on a tower that included much larger attention-grabbing features.

In the following years four additional missions were established. Thpse four are part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
The Alamo is a State and national shrine.
Th SA Express News Editorial Board got it right. Those who complained are closed-minded, self-righteous zealots.
IMHO, the staff and students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio need to stand fast.
Those who stand fast have nothing to fear.
That is, Christians need to stand fast.
i.e., somebody who did extremely poorly on his/her LSAT.
Were you always a criminal or did you have to go to school for that?
Crosses make you kneel down and convert to Christianity upon seeing them.
They must be eliminated from society.

Three years later the survivors at Jamestown erected a memorial to Rev.Robert Hunt. In 1935 a Cross of Stone was dedicated there to memorialize what happened at Cape Henry
in 1607.Texas AM should be ashamed at their anti-American bigotry.
Try 1598, or the Mission at Hopewell, VA ~ that's quite early 1500s ~ and Puerto Rico certainly gets in on this ~ that was discovered on Columbus second voyage and it's inconceivable Frey Buel forgot to raise or show a Cross.

Speaking as a lifelong atheist, I’m totally fine with the placement of these crosses. The atheists who oppose them are asshats and do not speak for me.

hope we agree the first symbol raised by those who would become Americans was the Cross of Christ.Columbus set sail in
search of a sea route around the Islamic terrorist of his day.
unless I am mistaken.He thought of himself as the Christ Bearer. And as noted by Wm Federer in his encyclopedia it
would be inconceivable to think of Columbus without a Cross.
