We do not choose to add more to the blame game for failure of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction , but one Democratic talking point needs debunking: that the talks failed because of Republicans’ attachment to the Bush tax cuts.
The untold story of the negotiations is the significance of the Republican offer of fundamental tax reform. It is critical to understand the interplay between the proposal (dubbed the "Toomey plan") and existing tax law.
At no time in the negotiations did the Democratic committee members drop their insistence that, one way or the other, any deal had to include a trillion dollars in new taxes. Republicans believe that would kill job creation and economic recovery. In the long run, a strong economy producing more wealth (and, therefore, more tax revenue) is how we will both reduce the deficit and regain the prosperity that all Americans deserve.

Although I'm thinking of getting back into the 'active' swing and start in with my county republican clubs again. I've been 'in retirement' for some years for several reasons: got sick of the Republicans 'Achilles Heel - "Whose 'turn' is it?"; health set backs; I'm a great gramma now, also retired from writing and my 22 year old column, snuggled down in my little forest haven, friendly heat from the wood stove, dog's head keeping my feet warm...
Why would I want to drag myself out in the dark night and snow for meetings and listen to the same old: "Who's turn is it?"
I'm not as young as I used to be - I'm at an age where I enjoy saying whatever I want and that isn't always appreciated.
Lets not fall into the trap of calling reductions in spending growth as cuts. There’s a big difference between “budget cuts” and “spending cuts”. Even with the auto trigger cuts defense spending will go up.
Am I the only one who believes that the bulk of our military spending is for less than national defense needs?

What else should one expect with Team McConnell/Boehner?
The Obamanation wants to clone Truman’s winning 1948 strategy of running against a “do nothing” Republican congress (albeit one house of congress); thus the set-up engineered for 0bummer by the Demonrats on the “super committee.”
Is anyone really surprised? The Dems were NEVER going to cut entitlements, and any ‘cuts’ that are there are only reductions in growth. They’re not REAL cuts. They simply wanted an election year issue.
McConnell was more to blame than Boehner.
The military cuts should start with all staff associated with Air Force One, Marine One and any staff that are assigned to “protect” Obama. Leave the jackass grounded and fending for himself.
Whether it’s a Republican or a Democrat I have always been in favor of getting rid of the secret service, airforce one, giving the whitehouse a budget of 500K and requiring ALL politicians to fly coach.
Only a tyrant would fear to be unarmed amongst their people.
It was never meant to come up with ANY answer. It was a total waste of time and money on a group of ego driven useless elected thieves.
I believe that ALL elected officials could care less about what people want as long as they continue to re=elect these loser into office.
I can’t believe this is in the Washington Post. My fear is the Pubbies will let Obozo and the Dems blame them for the failure of the Super Committee and they won’t fight back. They seldom ever do. Love him or hate him, Newt Gingrich is no sissy; he’s a fighter. Hopefully he will lay the truth out there.
