Raising Cain: How a poor Georgia boy succeeded in business, and aimed for the presidency
StarTribune ^ | November 26, 2011 | HELEN O'NEILL , Associated Press

ALLADEGA, Ala. - He's a mathematician, a minister, a former radio talk show host and pizza magnate. But most of all, Herman Cain is a salesman.

And how he sells.

"The sleeping giant called `we the people' has awakened," Cain thunders, pacing the stage in his trademark dark suit, brown fedora and "lucky" gold tie, delivering a rollicking, 45-minute performance that evokes an old-fashioned church revival, complete with cries of "Amen" from his audience.

Whether it's selling his book or his presidential aspirations, this is Cain at his best, grinning and joking and wooing a crowd, soaking in the adulation as he vows to lead the cheering masses to a promised land of "less regulation, less legislation and less taxation."

That's simplistic, of course. But so is Cain's message, and he makes no apologies for it.

"They want to confuse you with comp-lex-city," booms the self-styled "Hermanator," accentuating every syllable. "I want to lead you with sim-pli-city."

In the end, he takes no questions, sweeping off to his next stop to the tune of "Rock You Like a Hurricane." His smile disarms everyone whose hand he shakes along the way.

"Is he for real?" asks 75-year-old Jean Waggoner, a longtime Republican activist from Montgomery.

It is a question that has confounded political observers and pollsters alike: Just what to make of this unlikely candidate with an inspirational personal story, a magnetic personality and a campaign like nothing they have ever seen.

“But most of all, Herman Cain is a salesman.”

Exactly why I would never vote for him...

People like Herman Cain because they can connect to him. People don’t care much about the details. They like his life story and faith, which is very Reaganesque. And the chattering classes ridicule it. They give him no chance whatsoever. Let’s see what the American people have to say. They have yet to be heard from.

“Aimed” is past tense. Did Cain drop out?

If you don’t like his message, you aren’t forced to vote for him. I like him personally. He’s funny, inspirational and he has a good head even if details are not his greatest strength. Cain should have been finished off. He’s still around!

I could argue that, but it still doesn’t mean I want a salesman in the White House...

You mean a CEO? He’s never been a career politician. And he has rough edges. Cain is the anti-Obama. Obama never held a private sector job in his entire life. Between the two of them - its no contest.

He has also been a rocket scientist for the Navy, and the companies he rose in were Coca Cola and Pillsbury. “This is Herman Cain” deserves to be read by all voters. Mr. Cain, indeed, has lived the American Dream, and he passionately wants everyone to be able to do the same.

Not only is he highly capable of handling the presidency,
he is a true statesman with honor and integrity. His promises will be delivered, with the cooperation of a new and fresh Congress.

The good Lord has provided us with a second “George Washington”, if only we are smart enough to take him to the White House.

Robert Downey, Jr is funny and inspirational as well; do you think he should run? That said, a person whose strengths don't include strict attention to detail will either fail or be mislead.

It’s the “nothing happens” part of your statement that is flawed...

That’s what liberals said of the 40th President.

They called him Bozo because he famously couldn’t remember the details.

The American people discounted them.

What exites me about Cain is the potential he possesses to lead his people out of Democrat bondage. Nothing would make me happier.

Anyone who strikes terror in the heart of my enemy gets my support.

OblahMao was/is a snake oil salesman extraordinaire. At least Cain is selling a reputable product.I have confidence that Cain would put competent leaders in his cabinet unlike the drecks the Bam foisted upon us all.

The PONTUS has to be a salesman. Sorry, but that is 99% of his job as PONTUS. He heads a team of experts, and communicates to the people and to Congress what that team decides in a palatable way. If the is a conservative, he becomes the face of the conservatives to the American people.

The PONTUS “sells” our vision overseas. That’s the essence of foreign policy. We can have all kinds of brilliant ideas, but if the PONTUS can’t sell them, we’re doomed.

Obama has been castigated for a failure to lead with the Super Committee. That’s because he didn’t do the requisite behind the scene twisting of arms needed to force a compromise. That’s the kind of person needed in the White House.

I’m not saying Cain is the only one running who is able to do this. I’m still in the decision process. But the most brilliant man in the world also has to be likable and a good salesman. I’m between Cain/ Gingrich/ Bachmann and even Sanatorium.

One of the things I worry about with Gingrich is that as clever as he is, I’m not so sure I trust him and I think he turns off some people with his arrogance. Cain comes across simpler and somehow cleaner, although I worry about his lack of foreign policy experience. But then again, he’s going to be the frontman, or the spokesman, or an experienced team. He’d be good at that.

Better a salesman than a lawyer. . . .
