TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran will target NATO's missile defense installations in Turkey if the U.S. or Israel attacks the Islamic Republic, a senior commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard said Saturday.

Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the head of the Guards' aerospace division, said the warning is part of a new defense strategy to counter what he described as an increase in threats from the U.S. and Israel.

Well, that seems to be a singular displacement of rage, against a fellow Muslim country? Are the Iranians completely devoid of simple good sense?

The Turks are nothing if not particularly intense fighters, and if, by the way, they should take out the Kurds in the region that lies partly in both Iran and Turkey, that will be just a bonus for them. The Turks have no reason to stop just because they arrive at the gates of Teheran.

Saddam Hussein will be a person remembered almost fondly by the Iranians. By the Kurds, for that matter.

Warning: Do NOT kick hornets’ nests. Even in a playful spirit.

Stupid jawas.

So, Iran feels like attacking a NATO member state?

Well, that should be entertaining, to put it mildly.

Being as both Turkey and Greece are NATO member states, the short is answer is yes, Greece would help (Turkey) because an attack on Turkey would likely automatically invoke Article Five of the NATO Charter, which states that an attack against a NATO member state is an attack against NATO itself. Here’s from NATO itself:

“The principle of collective defence is at the very heart of NATO’s founding treaty. It remains a unique and enduring principle that binds its members together, committing them to protect each other and setting a spirit of solidarity within the Alliance.

This principle is enshrined in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. It provides that if a NATO Ally is the victim of an armed attack, each and every other member of the Alliance will consider this act of violence as an armed attack against all members and will take the actions it deems necessary to assist the Ally attacked.”
source: http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/topics_59378.htm

So if Iran has a colossal dumb-ass attack and goes after Turkey, then it’s the equivalent of attacking the USA and all the other NATO signatory states.

So, Ahmadenijad and Ayatollah Khameni, have fun. Say hello to the devil when NATO blows you straight to hell!

See post #25.

Turkey is a NATO member state; an attack on Turkey is an attack on NATO itself.

And that includes the USA.

"If the Israelis attack, they will do so w/o our assistance."

Then all of Iran's oil facilities will be destroyed at a time when western ties are completely broken with Islamo-fascist Pakistan and other places often visited by Lawrence of Arabia. Not a problem for us Americans.

U.S. Energy Information Administration
"How dependent are we on foreign oil?
The United States imported about 49% of the petroleum,1 which includes crude oil and refined petroleum products, that we consumed during 2010. About half of these imports came from the Western Hemisphere. Our dependence on foreign petroleum has declined since peaking in 2005.
"

I bet Iran will eventually threaten to nuke Mecca if anyone attacks them.

They could always blame it on the Jooze.

More seriously, I don't think they would--Shiites buy into Mecca; the split with the Sunnis came a few generations later.

I don't think they'd mind taking over Mecca, though, if they could become the dominant Arab power and reduce Saudi to an oil producing vassal province.

Iran is a very large country.
Iran has a large population.
Iran is not really a backward country where people ride camels. It could be a significant opponent.

This could be a bad idea like a land war in Asia. Would we ever try to roll into China and occupy it? I don’t think so.

If we fight Iran, we would be foolish to ever put boots on the ground. Nukes all the way. 100% of our effort should be nuclear devastation. No invasion. No rebuilding. Just a calm, “Don’t make us mad again.”

It has to be surgical. Bunker busters at every nuclear facility followed by commandos to clean up. Destroy Iran’s navy, air force, missile facilities and all gasoline refineries plus any port facilities that support gasoline imports.

Maybe Iran and Turkey can wipe each other out, so we can march in and reclaim Constantinople.

“About half of these imports came from the Western Hemisphere. Our dependence on foreign petroleum has declined since peaking in 2005.”

It doesn’t matter whether our oil comes from Saudi Arabia or Texas. If world oil prices go up then the cost of oil in the United States will go up. Oil is a freely traded commodity. If England, Germany or China bids $200/ barrel then the price will be $200/barrel here as well.

The truly frightening thing is that Obama said about coal that if his plans were successful “then the price of energy will necessarily skyrocket.” That tells me that beyond a few political statements about bringing the price down that he will still nix pipelines and drilling permits. Of course, he’ll probably blame Bush.
