TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran will target NATO's missile defense installations in Turkey if the U.S. or Israel attacks the Islamic Republic, a senior commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard said Saturday.

Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the head of the Guards' aerospace division, said the warning is part of a new defense strategy to counter what he described as an increase in threats from the U.S. and Israel.

Iran could barely handle Iraq in the 80s. Aside from their missiles, they have no ability to launch counterstrikes. The only thing they have is a large force in the Basijj. It would be decimated if it tried to move in any significant numbers. The only thing that would stop them from being annihilated is our own tolerance for the carnage.

Doesn’t matter. We provide the assistance and materials they use. They’d consider us culpable. Too bad we don’t feel the same way about the obvious attacks Iran has sponsored/executed against our forces.

A nation of 80 million is going to attack a nation of 72 million? Pass the popcorn.

Iran is an expansionist, terrorist state whose meddling has (1) crippled its own economy, (2) sown bloodshed in a region that most sane people would not believe could hold any more, and (3) mortally offended certain groups with their own intentions of Islamic expansionism, the Saudis, not to mention the former (and very successful) proprietors of Islamic empire, the Turks.

This will not end well for the Iranians. The IRG has its share of blowhards, to be sure - the number of times their rhetorical might has set the Persian Gulf afire is enough for the entire Fifth Fleet to toast marshmallows over the side. But popping Turkey will only allow a perfect cover for NATO countries with a long list of reasons to slap the Iranians to do so with relative impunity. Anyone in Tehran who thinks that's a good idea needs his head examined.

It would almost be funny to tick off the iranians so they will hit the Turks. Not much of anything more brutal than a pissed off Turk.

I know the Chinese and Norks didn’t like to come across the Turks during the Korean War. I think the Iranians would become all too familiar with that sentiment really quickly.

"It doesn’t matter whether our oil comes from Saudi Arabia or Texas. If world oil prices go up then the cost of oil in the United States will go up. Oil is a freely traded commodity. If England, Germany or China bids $200/ barrel then the price will be $200/barrel here as well."

At prices like that, freight fuel prices would solve that problem. ;-)

I think the Turks would mop the floor with the Iranians, militarily speaking. Then they’d add Iran as a province.

Or, if they were feeling generous they’d give it to the Kurds as their new Kurdistan.....a bury the hatchet sort of thing.

The Turks are pretty heavily armed with modern weapons, provided by us, the other NATO powers, and even from Israel. Iran could barely handle Iraq; if they were confronted with Turkey head-on, they wouldn’t know what to do.

I bet Iran will eventually threaten to nuke Mecca if anyone attacks them

And lost the bet. Nuking Mecca is the thing muslims fear most. It would utterly destroy Islam, as Allah would have proven unable to protect the Rock and the heart of Islam. The muslims believe Allah controls EVERYTHNG down to the sub-atomic level.

With the destruction of the Rock, current muslims would convert or become atheists. This is no secret, just not talked about.

-——I bet Iran will eventually threaten to nuke Mecca -——

No, certainly not. That statement indicates misunderstanding of the big picture.

The goal of the Iranian mullahs is control of Mecca and thus Islam. Israel is a side show and really irrelevant. Saudi Arabia and Mecca and thus all of the Arabian peninsula is the objective.

Back about 1979 a contingent of armed Iranian troops flew in to Jeddah for the hajj and attempted to capture the Grand Mosque. They were wiped out by Saudi Security forces, every man killed. The objective remains the same but the method has changed.

That made me think about a sci-fi movie with Roddy Piper the wrestler, he finds a pair of special glasses that allows him to see aliens that have invaded the city, and ultimately he destroys the mind control transmitter and everybody sees the aliens for what they are.

If Mecca was absolutely destroyed, nothing but a crater, just what would the hundred million or so Moslems around the planet Earth would do?

Maybe some will indeed just snap out of it but I would bet on a whole heck of a lot no matter what just going totally Jihad, on anything, uncoordinated and without any remorse.

The Iranians are not totally stupid, they could given time find fissile material that could be traced back in some fashion as being from the USA, they could IMHO very much attempt an attack upon Mecca, maybe an aborted but successful detonation nearby or just the discovery, just what it would take to awaken all the latent moderate Moslems in America.

All the world believes its a CIA attempt and thus like throwing rocks at your neighbors hornets nest above his open window who will the hornets attack?

You miss the point. The Iranians want Mecca as it is, intact with no blemishes.

Mecca is the most holy of hollies and the reason for being Moslem.

Never in their wildest dreams would the y consider harming, much less destroying the site of the pilgrimage

They have no logic nor reason, I bet that in their beliefs any method possible to defeat the enemy, does that truly protect Mecca?

I was reading how the British during WW2 knew a bombing raid was going to happen upon Coventry, but if they took action to defend it they would lose their intel, so they held back, and Coventry was destroyed.

.....They have no logic nor reason.....

That is a fundamental error. They are quite capable of developing and implementing a strategic plan. The Iranian Mullahs will never bring any harm to Mecca

Well, they wouldn’t be praying 5 times a day to a false god and a radioactive crarter... for starters.
