Longshot Republican candidate mulls third-party run [Gary Johnson]

Disgruntled former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson says he is considering leaving the Republican slate and running as a third-party candidate in the 2012 presidential election.

"I feel abandoned by the Republican Party," Johnson, who has been left out of most of the Republican debates, told the Sante Fe New Mexican newspaper this week, saying he might seek the Libertarian Party's support.

"The Republican Party has left me by the wayside," said Johnson, whose polling numbers have recently been so low that they are often not even being picked up by pollsters.

"If I'd have been included in 16 of the last debates we wouldn't even be having this conversation," he said.

While the Libertarians are on the ballot in every state, Johnson acknowledged that the party, which espouse freedom of expression and action, had never received more than one percent of the nationwide vote.

Johnson, 58, holds dear libertarian values such as low taxes and limited government and wants to legalize marijuana.

Oh no. He will get .0000002 percent of the vote. Let him do it. I completely forgot about him even running. He is hardly a burp.

He will get .0000002 percent of the vote.

If he's lucky.

he’s the guy that made the “shovel ready” comment about his neighbors dogs in comparison to Obama’s shovel ready jobs.

just so you know, the Ron Paul fans that email me always include him as someone they would vote for. Ron Paul says he “has no intention” of a third party run. Could be that his supporters would push Gary as a third party candidate with as much force as a Ron Paul third party run. Don’t underestimate them, they are certain that without Ron Paul or Gary Johnson, the nation goes under. These are desperate times.

Libertarians have routinely been known to take the margin of victory between GOP and Democrat candidates. Running as a Libertarian, Bob Barr gave both Indiana and North Carolina to Zero in 2008 (IN hadn’t gone Dem in a Presidential race since 1964). In the race for the seat Gabby Giffords holds in AZ, she only defeated Republican Jesse Kelly with a mere plurality in 2010.

Gary Johnson could prevent the Republican candidate from winning New Mexico (which is a state we need to win), even if he only got, say 5% or so, which he probably will.

I think Buddy Roemer is already lined up for the 3rd Party ticket. Johnson will have to settle for 4th Party. Maybe even 5th.

Who is Gary Johnson???

He is a former Governor of New Mexico and a champion of Constitutionalism and personal freedom.

His stance on legalizing most drugs, particularly marijuana, has alienated him and made him the undeserved target of ridicule. Still, he certainly deserves a place in the debates, where even Ron Paul is included, and candidates like Santorum, who never poll over 2%, are welcomed.

IMO, it truly sucks that he has been systematically excluded from the debates and political conversation. He is at least as qualified, by experience, as most of the other Republican hopefuls. I personally admire the man, but would like to know more about his foreign policy stance. His libertarian leanings might make him isolationist, but that is not a given. If anyone knows more about Governor Johnson, please post.

Hell, I’m a Republican too. And I’ve been left out of EVERY DEBATE. I simply don’t know how long I can put up with it. I may have to also run Third Party.

Successful businessman, 2 term Republican Governor of New Mexico, vetoed 800 bills out of the Democrat controlled legislature, and left the state with a multi-hundred million dollar surplus that Richardson promptly squandered.

Not terribly conservative socially, favors some drug legalization, and is pro-choice.

Nice enough guy, my wife knew him back in her triathlon days.
