The police brutality against peaceful protesters in Berkeley, Davis, Oakland and elsewhere is bad enough.
But next week, Congress will vote on explicitly creating a police state.

It’s wrong since they are voting next week and this is the first time I’ve heard about it. How about a little debate? How about the republican candidates weigh in on it?
A third problem is that the government refuses to be constrained by any law restricting its power. So what the Bill of Rights, or the Posse Comitatus act says, is wholly irrelevant.

Whatever restrictions exist because of current law, can be overturned in a moment by the passage of a different law.

Since when has current law constrained the regime?
And yes, I wholly understand that the answer to that question, becomes the start of a revolution and either the fall of the nation or the restoration of Constitutional government.
As some of the other posters on this thread this is the first I've heard about this piece of proposed legislation. So, I want to learn more. However, if this law empowers our military to take action against U.S. citizens on U.S. soil then I believe the Posse Comitatus Act will have to be amended or even rescinded. I would be opposed to our military being empowered to take action against U.S. citizens while on U.S. soil. However, keep in mind that we've had U.S. citizens show up on the battlefield in both Afghanistan and Iraq. So, I'm ok with wasting them in situations such as this. Also, if we are ever going to shut down illegal immigration on our southern border it will be necessary to militarize it I think which will require some amending to the Posse Comitatus Act to do this. So, guess we need to do some listening and learning and then ping our respective congress persons and senators....

While S. 1235 had some very scary language in it, apparantly this one does not and applies only to foreign capture of noncombatants, but under the law of war.

I hope our 2012 nominee will take this bull by the horns.
It would be helpful if the author would identify which sections of the over 600 pages of that bill were the cause for concern. Without seeing the offending language, fruitful discussion with meaningful input is not possible.
Is there any way to narrow this fearful warning down to its true dimensions? I have only read into it a few hundred pages, and I need some help to not waste my day...

Mostly because this is more or less a routine military funding authorization bill. I imagine it started in the House.
America IS part of the battle field. But rules of political correctness prevent us from identifying the real enemies.

(1) UNITED STATES CITIZENS- The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States."

S1235 did indeed have some frightening language. But apparantly there’s still a few freedom lovers, both Democrat and Republican, who voted it down.
