Former Arkansas governor and 2008 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Sunday became the latest pundit to concede that while Mitt Romney may not be the perfect candidate, conservatives should prepare to support him as their nominee.
As Ben Smith reported, when Huckabee was asked Sunday by 77WABC New York "Investigative Radio" host Aaron Klein to comment on whether the tea party will sit out the 2012 election if former Massachusetts Gov. Romney is the Republican nominee, Huckabee responded with the following:
It would be real tragic if they stayed out because Mitt Romney may not be their first choice, but Mitt Romney every day of the week and twice on Sunday is gonna to be a much more effective president for issues that they care about than Barack Obama. And I think sometimes there is this anxiety within the Republican Party of who is the perfect candidate. The answer is: there isn't one. And so, what you find is you have to decide who can survive the process. And whoever that is-- and if it's Mitt Romney, then I think Republicans and conservatives and tea party need to get behind him and say, 'You may not be our first choice, but between you and Obama, I'll vote forty times to help get you elected.'
Huckabee's comments are the latest indication conservatives are readying one another to "hold their noses" and vote for Romney, who opponents on both sides of the aisle paint as the most moderate major Republican candidate in the 2012 race.
Last week, it was conservative pundit Ann Coulter who was dispensing the "get ready for Romney" advice.

Conservative media and certainly FOX are obvious in their promotion of Romney and have the tools to TRY and pull off a Romney cram down right along with the establishment. The noise machine will be increasing from now on, as these primaries are at the door and Romney is well past his chance at landing an early knock out of all other candidates. He can’t even maintain the lead. If Romney doesn’t seal the deal, and he has not, then we have a chance for a non-Romney.
you got it right.
Same error the folks make who say, “the priority is to defeat Obama.”
No, the priority is to defeat Romney. THat is the first and last priority. Everything else is dog food.
” Hucks got to keep his boss Roger Ailes happy, all the fox folks have to do as they are told by Roger. “ <<<
You are on to something there. I know there are a number of candidates still holding on, but FOX has been sidling up with the establishment for a cram down of Romney, using their noise machine to do it, since the get-go.
Perry got in the way, then Cain and now Newt. We should be thanking these men, or it would be already over.
I can easily afford four more years of divided government. No problem at all. I rather enjoy the idea of pitting obama against a conservative house AND senate actually.
How did you get onto this thread? You actually read the article and make sense. Huckabee wasn’t endorsing Romney, he was just trying to prepare Republicans to deal with reality, which is sometimes an unpopular position around here.
I can’t stand Romney myself, but I’d crawl over broken glass to vote for him if that’s my only choice other than Obama. All this “I’ll NEVER vote for him! I’ll just sit home and help reelect Obama” or “I’ll write in Ron Paul!” or whatever, makes me want to scream. ANYONE short of a dug-up and reanimated Stalin is better than Obama, and if you don’t do everything you can to prevent four more years of him, then I don’t consider you to give a damn about America’s future.
As I always say, my fellow Republicans have to protect the Second Amendment so they’ll always be able to shoot themselves in the foot every time there’s an election.
ironically, huckster. it’s on moral grounds that i can’t back romney. if he repents, then i can take another look.
This conservative evangelical will not be voting for Mitt Romney. Huckster presumes a leadership he is not entitled to.
News of Mitt’s flipflopping has made it all the way to Italy
On some issues it might be forgiven of a politician (and it’s certainly nothing new), but too much is too much!
What the huck?
With all the other candidates splitting up the vote maybe Mike Huckabee is right.....but we shall see..........
Like, Gov. Romney has this incredible insurmountable DELEGATE COUNT LEAD for the GOP nomination, so we should all throw in the towel since he is nearly the 1,212 needed. As if.
Not a SINGLE VOTER OR CAUCUS-GOER HAS CAST A VOTE YET.
This is no coronation, this will be a full fought out battle of ideas. Mitt Romney and his spokesbots all along the center and right in the imperial talking head department dictating downward to us backward peasants as they have always done, well, can just take a 50 yard dash off a 40 yeard long pier. There are many more of us than them. So they can just get in the back seat, shut up and let US do the driving for a change.
WHO IN THEIR NERVE TALKED THIS WAY TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN AN OPENLY CONTESTED, VOLATILE PRESIDENTIAL RACE IN NOVEMBER THE YEAR BEFORE THE GENERAL ELECTION, IN YEARS PAST? How did we get this far? "Get Ready for Eisenhower, here he comes!" (1952) "Get Ready for Nixon, here he comes!" (1968) "Get Ready for Dewey (1948), here he comes!".
This conservative’s answer to Huckabee:
Go whizz up a rope you jackass!
FUMH & FUMR
gingrich would for 100% certain nominate conservative judges, Romney would not.
I wish these leftist RINO republicans would shut up.
And those that support the backstabbing RINO
deserve their upcoming ostracization.
Hack-abee showing that flash of that tbrilliance that condemned him to be an “also-ran”...
The Huckster is good on camera but his vision needs a pair of glasses.
That really sounds like something Chucklehead would say. As I have said here before, y’all go ahead and send Romney out there. Set him up and watch Obama knock him out of the park.
I could be wrong. Romney could win, but I’m not going to help put a lying, flip flopping, sanitized, RINO crap weasel in my White House. There is no guarantee that he would be any better than what we have now.
Remember, Bush tried to put poor old Harriet Myers on the USSC as well as other really stupid ideas. That was really nice of him to let Teddy Kennedy write that fiasco of a education spending bill, which Teddy referred to as “a good start”. Remember?
I’m telling you FRiends, the fix is already in.
RINO = Democrat. Seriously...what’s the difference?
Huckabee? And his authority is, what, divine inspiration, more cash from Romney’s slush fund, or ...? This is about as nonsensical as Obama telling republicans to prepare to back Romney (in fact, that’s what democrats have been trying to push all along, so perhaps it’s because Huckabee has been getting extra cash from Obama’s slush fund).
Romney won’t survive the primary.
Yo, huck, ESAD.
And yet the R elite believes they have the right to jam such idiots down our throats.
Not going to happen. I’ll vote for Mickey Mouse first, and I hate Disney corp.
I don't see anything that would support this. Gingrich would presumably nominate candidates who would support his positions, including government mandate health care, amnesty for illegal aliens, government spending on "global warming", etc. Such a judge would not be "conservative".
I’m not sure that Gingrich would, but I’m completely sure that Romney wouldn’t.
“This conservative evangelical will not be voting for Mitt Romney. Huckster presumes a leadership he is not entitled to.”
Of course you won’t, he’s a Mormon, and Evangelicals don’t much like Mormons, do they? To be expected that you wouldn’t vote for him.
I have nothing against Mormons.
