Rick Perry gets U.S. voting age wrong in New Hampshire
WaPo ^ | 11/29/11 | Rosalind S. Helderman

At a town hall meeting at the Institute of Politics at New Hampshire’s Saint Anselm’s College Tuesday, Rick Perry asked that all of the college students in the crowd who will be 21 by Nov. 12 support his bid for the presidency.

Say what?

The voting age in the United States is, of course, 18. And the 2012 election will be held on Nov. 6, 2012. (The New Hampshire Republican primary, which brought Perry to the state, will take place on Jan. 10).

“Those who are going to be over 21 on November 12th, I ask for your support,” Perry said, eliciting a few chuckles from the crowd.” Those who won’t be, just work hard. Because you’re... counting on us.”

The gaffe can be easily chalked up to a slip of the tongue. In fact after the event Perry spokesman Mark Miner said simply “the governor misspoke.”

But whiffing on electoral basics will hardly help Perry as he struggles to recover from a series of gaffe-filled and lackluster debate performances (the most memorable of which was the “oops” moment during a Republican debate when Perry failed to recall the third government department he would eliminate as president).

Minor gaffe...similar to "57 states".

But the GOP guy will get laughed at more at every blip, of course.

Blips have happened...and will continue to happen...they're normal.

They only play it with non-Liberals.

But useful-idiot non-Liberals take the bait every single time.

Lets hope this guy isn’t the GOP nominee. He’ll be surrounded by a non-stop circus (mostly of his own doing) rather than substantive, adult debate. He reminds me a good bit of Carter. The voters of GA seemed to like the guy but he was completely UNFIT for any higher office esp one that would have such wide reaching ramifications. Guess Perry is going to play the slow learner tho and make a fool of himself at a national level.

Shhh! You're ruining his latest "comeback week". Haven't you heard Perry has big mo now? He's on a surge and will hit 6% in the polls any day now. ;-)

I rate this one worse than the "57 states" gaffe. We've never had 57 states, unless Obama arrived in a time machine from the future. But we really did have a "21 year old" voting barrier...40 years ago. I genuinely think Perry was not aware that the voting age had been lowered to 18 nationally until his aides informed him.

Cain's gaffs as you call them are much more serious than that. Jack Wheeler says Cain doesn't know what he is doing and within about a week that continues to be proven.

Perry was a jet pilot for the Air Force, that is a very hard accomplishment. You have to have high intellect to accomplish that alone. The left always used that against Reagan and it seems if the right can get away with it...they are using it against Perry.

It has only been 40 years since the voting age changed to 18 by amending the Constitution........ Perry still thinks it's 21.

THIS is his great comeback? Announcing to America he knows nothing about the US Constitution?

-----------------------------------------

You aint seen nuttin' yet. Wait til America gets a load of Perry's upcoming ads:

<><> Vowing China will not go Communist under his watch.

<><> Promising to give Merck a $100 million federal grant to research a vaccine to wipeout diptheria in our time.

<><> Warning that he's spittin' mad about the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.

That is hardly a misspoke. He deliberately said that 21 year olds should give me the vote, but others work hard to get me elected. I guess this is what we get when a candidate wants to be President and gets a 2.2 in college. Yieks! Thank God people are smart enough not to vote for him (at least the mass majority).
