Skip to comments.Obama Supporters Worried He May Grant Contraception Exemptions to Catholic Hospitals
Posted on 11/29/2011 1:31:48 PM PST by Mrs. Don-o
In August, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that health insurance plans, as of January 1, 2013, will be required to cover contraception, including FDA-approved emergency contraception. These historic guidelines are based on science and existing literature and will help ensure women get the preventive health benefits they need, she said. The Catholic Church has been pushing the White House to allow Catholic hospitals to opt out of providing contraception that it considers the termination of a life, and many in the abortion rights community are worried that the president will grant that exemption. Additionally, many Democrats invested in President Obamas re-election are worried that if he grants that exemption, he will alienate liberal women voters they will need come November.
Theres a high level of concern, a prominent Democrat with ties to the White House told ABC News...
"The real concern is that theres even a discussion about this!
Earlier this month, President Obama met with Archbishop Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which has been lobbying hard for an exemption, having called the requirement an unprecedented attack on religious liberty.
A bulletin the Bishops sent out criticizes the religious exemption in the rule as so extremely narrow it protects almost no one. It covers only a religious employer that has the inculcation of religious values as its purpose, primarily employs and serves persons who share its religious tenets, and is a church organization under two narrow provisions of the tax code. Catholic colleges, universities, hospitals, and charitable organizations will not qualify, the Bishops say.
Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, told ABC News that her organizations biggest concern is with the narrowing of the definition of religious employer.

That is to say, it's about contraception too, but the Obama Administration's tactic is to package them together to make the sale, and then count on non-Catholic Christian support for "contraception" to split and wreck any opposition. It's a truly ham-handed move for coast-to-coast coercion on abortion funding.
I'll repeat that: COAT TO COAST COERCION ON ABORTION FUNDING, starting with "emergency contraception" (a.k.a. post-coital contraception, a.k.a. abortion by drugs) and then moving right onto the roadkill-babies superhighway.
What do we do? I mean not hand-wringing and oh-woe-ing, but what do we :::DO:::?
Maybe they should just shut their hospitals.
Then again, that is the eventual goal of Obamacare.
Please ping this very widely.
25% of all hospital beds in America are in a building with the word “Saint” on the door. You want a healthcare crisis? We’ll give you one.
Its not enough to these liberal ghouls that secular facilities provide these services. People would simply go where the services are provided.
No, they have to try to force everyone, regardless of moral objection, to participate in their immorality.
This has nothing to do with service and everything to do with control. Liberals are anti-freedom.
Forgive me for asking a slightly off-topic — but related — question. Is it true that some medical schools force medical students to attend an abortion procedure in order to graduate, with no conscience exemption allowed?
Thanks to Justice Souter eminent domain laws can change that overnight with the stroke of a pen.
If some do, it’s certainly less than it used to be. I had this discussion with a medical student not long ago who objected to participation in an abortion on religious grounds. He was granted the exemption. I immediately told him that it would be justified on the basis of “respecting his diversity”. He broke out laughing and told me that was the first thing they told him.
If those hospitals all went on strike over this, they’d probably try to nationalize them.
I wouldn’t doubt it.

What they hell do they have to make such a ruckus?
The have to FORCE them to do this?
What evil pieces of obama these people are.
Very good. Thank you. This question has been troubling me for some days now. I could think of no way to get an answer to it without asking here.
No religious exemptions? Bah, humbug.
Well, I guess if there aren’t enough hospitals after the Catholic hospitals close,
the government will just have to fill that void.
Not knocking your sentiment, but this is exactly what they plan to do with all facets of our lives until they achieve the communist goal of not allowing the people to get anything unless it comes from “the party”.
I can give you a couple of things to consider.
First, there are good orthodox organizations waging the battle against government intrusion into matters of conscience. Consider joining the Catholic Medical Association to help support that cause. There are different categories of membership including "Friends" which would entitle non-physicians to the quarterly journal on medical ethics entitled "The Linacre Quarterly". You would also be able to attend the annual national meeting at discounted rates and receive their monthly email updates. Go to cathmed.org for further details. Contact me if you need further info.
Also, there is an interesting movement afoot to establish genuinely Catholic health care systems including Catholic health insurances to function totally outside the Medicare/Medicaid government systems. If they are not receiving government dollars, they would not be subject to the government regulations that go along with that funding stream.
Just a couple of things to think about.
Its so easy to see that this is how it was in Nazi Germany. You impose a rule that everyone must participate in certain unconscionable acts, you coerce people to commit these acts, and then after a person gives in to the coercion once, he encourages others to join him because that suages his conscience (”everyone’s doing it”).
It’s peer pressure 101 - with a little help from the gestapo...
Obama probably figures that the archbishop is talking a good game now but will fold when push comes to shove. The bishops may disagree over the abortion issue but on so many other issues they find the Democratic Party more congenial--illegal aliens, capital punishment, "social justice" issues, etc. He can always threaten to sic the IRS on the church.
It’s ironic as the origins of hospitals are Christian-based.
The more you do it, the easier it gets. Just as the habitual practice of the virtues facilitate doing good, so the repetitive practices of the vices are to evil.
There was a time when there really was an understanding in connection with separation of church and state. To me, allowing the hospitals to opt out is nothing more than following the laws on the books.
The EVIL in this country is palpable.
Absolutely and in direct opposition to the USCCB who confronted her about it to no avail.
She has no business complaining about anything now. When people like that diminish the power of the Church to root out evil, they cooperate in the wrongfulness of the act. The Church, Catholic physicians, and Catholic health care facilities need to be united in one voice on these matters and Sister Kathleen intentionally weakened that coalition.
The problem is that so many Catholic hospitals have been merged into partnerships with secular institutions and they often lose aspects of their Catholicity in the process.
But sister Kathleen got clear direction from the bishops and ignored it.
I’m missing something. How does a rule “that health insurance plans, as of January 1, 2013, will be required to cover contraception, including FDA-approved emergency contraception” effect HOSPITALS, which is what the rest of the article is about.
It seems a big step from saying “insurance must cover XXX” to “every hospital must provide XXX procedure”. After all there are many procedures that many hospitals can’t do. Open Heart Surgery, MRI’s, Cancer treatments, etc.
Is it only the morning after pill that she wants them to stock? Or do they have to do first trimester abortions?
I don’t get what gives her the right to order hospitals around.
I guess that the Catholic hospitals are employers who provide health insurance to their employees?
The argument is based on hospital or health care systems receiving government funding through Medicare and Medicaid. Government then claims that it cannot provide those funds if the full range of "services" are equally provided to all or, rather, that the funds are being used illegally if those services are denied.
As far as the question concerning hospitals is concerned, "emergency contraceptive services", such as the morning after pill, an abortifacient, are generally provided in emergency rooms which are usually located in hospitals.
Keep in mind that the pro-aborts have redefined “pregnancy” so that it does not begin until implantation. Any abortion before implantation, in their view, is “contraception.”
In Orwellian fashion, they’ve succeeded with their manipulation of the language so that for a lot of people today, “contraception” means something very different than it used to. I’d not be surprised if this new (lying) definition of “contraception” is not presupposed in the HHS regs.
Instead, we have church "leaders" who are quietly begging for exemptions, thus ceding to the state that the state has power and authority in this matter.
Not just no, but HELL NO!.
I don't know. Hocndoc? Anybody?
Absolutely. Keehan's the one. She ran the ball all the way up to the basket and give it a good toss, and then Stupak tipped it in.
I have no words to express what a ---
I have no words.
I don’t have a ping list, but Mrs. Don-o asked, so I’m pinging a few FRiends I think may be interested. Please take a look.
FRegards to All
That is a great post. Whether it be abortion, homosexuality or any other evil and deviant behavior.
I believe that the official stance is that it’s illegal due to Federal Law to force any medical student or resident to perform abortion. However, there are pressures.
I’ve been out for 20 years, but I hear stories about would be 0b/Gyns who can’t get a residency slot because they’re prolife. There’s at least one New York Family Practice residency program that offers a “fellowship” - extra training after finishing residency - in “reproductive medicine. Essentially, they run an abortion clinic.
Prolife faculty members have told me they make a point of mentoring students. There’s the American Association of Prolife OB/Gyns http://www.aaplog.org/ and the Christian Medical Association http://www.cmda.org/wcm/
We give students a community as well as support prolife views.

The Death Squad must make us all participate in their evil.
they don’t seem to upset about the closing of catholic adoption agencies. This won’t bug them either.

Important article and many excellent and informative comments on the thread. The leftists want to force everyone to participate in their immorality. Reminds me of war crimes I've read about; Pol Pot would force family members under threat of tortureto kill other family members, other examples as well. This bill (and others) are a form of war crimes.
Thanks for the ping. This may go the way of the adoption issue. And I don’t think Obama has to worry about loosing the liberal woman vote-—seen too many middle-aged disheveled white women with Obama 2012 bumper stickers already....
And if he does?
The federal government has absolutely no business in the health insurance industry, whether by morality or constitutionally based.
All the Protestant faith base hospitals should join in on this one. Keep the pressures on the killers of tiny babies.
“What do we do?”
There are a few suggestions here on what to do with these kinds of issues:
Awhile back, I can remember signing a petition on this issue, and I think it was from the USCCB.
That’s good news!
I know that the CMA does good work!
The Bishops are our best allies. When the Baptist and Church of Christ (Stonewall-Campbell, silent women, not that other group) hoped abortion and out of wedlock babies would go away (not my Daddy or husband, though), the Catholic Church, the Bishops, and (I love these guys) the Knights of Columbus were being our protectors.
Keep your hands off my body! Except when it is in the interest of advancing Marxism, then take complete posession of my physical being!
(Darn, it is hard to think like a libtard!)
Mrs. Don-o, my husband told me that Mother Teresa of Calcutta said that every Catholic need only spend one hour at Adoration a week for abortion to disappear. Fr. John A. Hardon also said it would be through the Eucharist that abortion would end. Those two were such good holy friends. :) So the power of ending abortion lies within the Catholic Church through her parishioners. So it seems only sloth (on the part of Catholics) is getting in the way of ending abortion.
Thanks Mrs. Don-o.
