U.S. to restart construction of N-reactors / Toshiba arm to deliver new model

TOKYO — After 34 years, the United States is expected to resume construction of nuclear reactors by the end of the year, and Toshiba will export turbine equipment for the reactors to the U.S. early next month, it was learned Saturday.

According to sources, construction will begin by year-end on the Nos. 3 and 4 reactors of the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Georgia and the Nos. 2 and 3 reactors of the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station in South Carolina.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is expected to shortly approve the construction and operation of the reactors, which have been designed by Westinghouse, a subsidiary of Toshiba.

The decision to resume construction of reactors is expected to pave the way for Japan to export related equipment to the United States, observers said.

The reactors to be constructed are of the AP1000 type, an advanced 1,100-megawatt pressurized water reactor, and are targeted to go into operation in 2016 at the earliest.

Westinghouse, a subsidiary of Toshiba.

If you had told someone this in 1950 they’d
have thought you were nuts.

When did this happen! I suppose the iron work will be made by B&W formerly of Ohio, now of Beijing!

Shale, offshore, alaskan oil, new reactors, and the ecat. Get ready for the energy boom of 2012-2016 with a republican president. We have to grow our way out from debt and it has to be with real production that starts with american produced energy.

We can and will restore the republic!

Best to go with the liquid sodium reactor than the pressurized water model. Much safer.

I don’t know about you or anyone else. But I am getting damned tired of the pessimism in tnis country. Especially the pesimisim coming out of my own mouth.

It’s time we get some yankee fire back. Time to get working and unleash the true potential of this country.

Step 1 elect conservatives - this WILL happen in nov. At this point nothing can stop the avalanche.

Is that the thorium based system? I’d heard that building those on military bases avoids a lot of the legal wrangling from liberal groups. Do you know anything about that?

My beeber is stuned. How did this get past Obama? We badly need a good 50 new nuke plants. OK, who is responsible for the sudden outbreak of common sense and how did it get past the children?

for anyone that cares - Florida Power built a nuke reactor on time and on budget - many years ago. Then they tried to win the Deming International prize for this work. A Japanese coach had a funny line - when they said that the building process was full of special efforts. He said, “then you were lucky.” They realized that Demning has value for American companies not jsut Toyota and Toshiba.
