Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has surged to the largest national lead held by any candidate so far in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters finds Gingrich on top with 38% of the vote. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is a distant second at 17%. No other candidate reaches double-digits.

The national survey of 1,000 Likely Republican Primary Voters was conducted on November 30, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

This is good news for Newt, who yesterday Rasmussen had beating Obama head to head nationally 45% to 43%.

Newt can take Romney in the Primary-—but he will have to struggle mightily to win the general.

He will have to demolish Zero in debates, and he can.

I’m not a Newt fan, but the silver lining is that they won’t be able to paint our candidate as stupid this time. It has been 40 years since we’ve had a nominee that isn’t “stupid”.

Recent polling has him ahead of Obama — I wonder what his numbers are like with independents, though.

It’s not the end of the primary; no one has voted yet. This might however be the end of many non-Romney candidates. We’ll have to see how it sorts out as the “also ran” candidates drop. Newt’s big strength as a candidate is being such a sleaze that another old scandal is not going to harm his reputation among conservatives, that and being genuinely knowledgeable on every issue. I’m not thrilled with him, but I’ll probably be able to vote for him if he is the nominee. I just hope we get the brilliant, conservative, tactically effective Newt, and not the other Newt whom we also know so well.

Oh you know they'll try and some will believe them again. Absurdity is no stranger to the the Democrat party.

Once the public hears what Newt has to say, Obama will be roadkill.

Newt stands the best chance of all the candidates to win this thing. America could care less about his past.

I could live with Newt as the nominee. I just worry that the way he has been savaged by the media, his brand might to too damaged to carry the general election.

Amazing. And, to think only a few months back he had several key players leave his campaign.

Honestly, in some way this is a victory for us. Historically, the most liberal Republican candidate would usually get all the media love and run away with the nomination. This time, Gingrich is to the right of Romney, Romney is probably the most liberal big-name GOP candidate in history, and he is having serious struggles. While Gingrich is far from perfect, this is a trend in the right direction.

I’m sure someone on the left will announce he was born in Kenya any day now and it will be over. Or maybe that his father was not a US Citizen. Or he hung out with domestic terrorists from the 60’s or collective salvation preachers in the urban cities. We all know how fast the media picks up on this type of thing.

There is a story going around that Newt Gingrich served his wife divorce papers while she was in the hospital dying of cancer. Here is an article debunking that, written by Newt’s daughter.

Ping for laughs. Paul overwhelms Perry in the bottom feeder category. Must be those “ineligible” 18 year old voters now pulling away for crazy uncle Ron...Good thing Rick’s posse is hot on the trail to round up those strays. /s/
