A rather interesting speech by the Dutch Chief of Defense, Peter van Uhm, on the role of firearms, military force, and constitutional government in creating a more peaceful world. Quite a bit of what he said is open to interpretation, and could be seen as supporting different viewpoints, but in any event, I thought it was still a fascinating speech, and certainly worth watching. And yes, it's in English.

I’ll watch this after work. Before work I watched a Gingrich video doing an NRA speach this year. Included shutting down any international gun ban treaties AND pro-actively siding with others around the world arming their citizens, that the right to be armed is from God, not man.

This is primarily a speech against pacifism....supporting the common sense notion that a GOVERNMENT that keeps the peace—with weapons—makes for a more peaceful world, allowing trade and peaceful resolution of conflict—within constitutional democracies.

I’m sure Gen. van Uhm supports strict gun control (as they have in Holland)—as in this speech he lauds the “state monopoly on violence” legitimate governments hold.

It’s a good speech, but its sad that it takes an important general to take his time speaking about the importance of armed police & military in keeping the peace.

To me this is so self evident so as to be a bit silly to talk about. It’s about as basic as the idea that capitalism brings prosperity.
